Q: For my 2002 gti 1.8L 4 cyl My buddy says to find a full exhaust system for around $500/600 bucks, because they will give better performance or something like that. I found one on amazon for $150 then one on O‘riely that‘s like $490, they both kinda look the same but I want good quality, i also found some for like $999, and I can‘t spend over $500 on one. Q: I bought a Catback Exhaust system from OBX Racing specific to my 2010 Mazda 3 S Sport. I took it to a licensed mechanic as to not void my warranty and he said he could not do it because VA requires there to be Cats on the vehicle and that I would have to buy one for him to install the system. Is this true? if the answer is yes, why does it happen.Any links?: It really depends on the engine - I've seen a lot of dyno charts where an engine picked up torque throughout the entire RPM range from a performance exhaust. The problem happens on some engines with a large amount of camshaft overlap. This means that the intake valves and exhaust valves are open at the same time for a significant period. If the exhaust backpressure is too low, the air and fuel coming in the intake valve can get sucked right out the exhaust valve. Since backpressure climbs with RPM, this effect only happens at low RPM. Like I said, though, it doesn't happen on every engine.
