- Q: For my 2002 gti 1.8L 4 cyl My buddy says to find a full exhaust system for around $500/600 bucks, because they will give better performance or something like that. I found one on amazon for $150 then one on O‘riely that‘s like $490, they both kinda look the same but I want good quality, i also found some for like $999, and I can‘t spend over $500 on one. Some one tell me what‘s the difference and what should I go with? Thanks
- I tend to go with FACTORY(as they bolt on and the holes match the studs VW Research Development Department tends to have more money to do best exhaust configuration Research than any custom exhaust garage. VW is no different than Chev or Ford (those are the companies with the money) so they do the research on every motor style. Then they choose the best one for that engine. Which would make sense; right? Otherwise they guess with every vehiclewhich is ludicrous. Sure, some clown with a pipe bender can make you an exhaust manifold and weld it up and spray paint it white or black or chrome But, they do not say invest $12,000 or more in designing it. They do not have the money nor the test faucilities to do that. They just bend pipe and weld it.and paint it. Theirs just makes more noise. Difference? Price. and advertising But they do not have the proof to back up their claims.

- I'm assuming a cat-back. All exhaust systems are easy to install if you have a lift, all of the proper hangers, and everything fits. :-) Of course the old system will resist coming off, the old hangers won't be reusable, and you will most likely be working on your back. Banks is a great product and if you check their site you will most likely find out what you need (if everything is included or you also need new clamps and hangers) whether there are fitment issues (like something that has to be removed of loosened and oddities like not fitting with a factory hitch or something) and MAYBE an installation video link ------------- you can't always trust the retailer to post everything ---------- you WILL find a link, of a similar install on YouTube if you look.

- Cat-back exhaust systems depending on the OEM design car can add 10-15 hp - not much more unless you do a custom ECU tune. You should also consider a complete system IE cat-back + down pipe. The real gains are to be had with an ECU re-flash with a custom tune. for example: The factory saab 9-3 turbo 2.o makes 205 Hp - with a catback-downpipe custom tune - they easily make 275-300 - instantly. Borla actually built several systems of various diameters to get the most power out of the VWs IE they actually tested them on the dyno they found on the VWs that the smaller 2 1/2 pipe susyems actually add more snap down low in RPMs. Remus the same.Go for the Remus OR Borla if you want killer sound - Remus actually tune there german exhaust systems to sound wicked - IE like tuning a musical instrument. Remus at www.remus.at. You can go to YouTube and listne to the various sounds of exhaust systems. IE Search VW Remus or Borla. Borlas website also has audio files.

- All cars have an exhaust system. That's the bit of pipe and assorted boxes between the engine and the tail pipe So I assume you mean a custom exhaust, that's a bit less restrictive and louder? If you just chop out random pieces and put in straight pipes you probably wont pass emission inspection any more. But it's generally possible to modify an exhaust system somewhat, keeping the catalytic converter etc, and still have the car to pass emissions. Just have to know what you are doing.
