- Q: I had to press 5 different types of leaves from my yard for part of my science project. I put newspaper, then the leaves, then a little more newspaper, then my english textbook, a dictionary, and a gallon of water. I let it sit for a week. My results:Australian bottle tree, Australian willow, kumquat bush, and lemon tree leaves worked perfectly.But... the ficus leaf (still got flattened and everything) is BROWN!What happened?I need to know ASAP so I know if I should try the ficus again or do a different type of leaf. I only have time for one more round of pressing before the project is due! Thanks :)
- Ficus plants are always a problem when pressing. The main reason is that they have latex in their tissues and many of them have relatively thick leaves. Not only do they turn brown (or even black) but the leaves usually drop off the stems. There are a few ways to make good Ficus specimens but the ones I've heard of require alcohol (enough to dip the plants in) and you'd need to be able to apply dry heat to your press for a few days at least. So, if you don't HAVE to have a Ficus, use something else (weed from your lawn would be easiest).
- Q: I want to make my own herbal tinctures at home, such as echinacea and cayenne tinctures. I see presses vary in price, from around $40 to almost a thousand $. Does a $40 herb press do the job, this job being to be able to make a few quarts of tincture from one batch of herbs?
- I have never heard of using a press for tinctures. I think of a press for expelling oils. Tinctures are liquid extracts using the herb and a medium like alcohol (grain alcohol or vodka), vinegar or glycerin. When I make tincture, I am usually using fresh leaves. I get enough leaves to fill the bottle. I run the leaves through the food processor and pack the bottle. Then I fill the bottle with the liquid. I use 90 proof vodka or grain alcohol with water 50/50. Vinegar I use straight. I have never tried glycerin for my homemade tinctures. I did make valerian tincture a long time ago. I used the powdered root and I forget the amount I used. You can use leaves, flowers, roots or the peppers, crush or chop and for dry ingredients fill your container halfway and then add the alcohol. I would spend my money on bottles, herbs or alcohol rather than a press. Good luck! Making a gallon would require a lot of herbs. Dry herbs would be equal to half a gallon of chopped herbs to a gallon of alcohol. Most tinctures need to age for around 6-8 weeks. Then you strain them out through a sieve and then a cheesecloth or tightly woven white towel. Then bottle. Remember, tinctures are strong medicines. Use them by drops or dilute before ingesting.
- Q: I would like to paint pressed wood on a desk and need some advice on the best way to do it? Any ideas would be great!!!
- Seal the pressed wood first. use a good quality oil based primer. make sure you read the label for how long to let the primer cure. Then use a good quality top coat. glossy is the hardest finish, then seni-gloss and down the line. Do not use flat or eggshell. There is not enough enamel in them to handle a good cleaning without the paint wearing off
- Q: I've been improving in other areas of weight lifting, but cannot seem to improve on my bench press. What exercise can I do to be able to lift more?
- Do bench press at the start of your workout when you are fresh.
- Q: I wasdoing decline presses in the gym the other day and experienced sharp pain in my front left shoulder. Sometimes the pain radiates from the top and along the shoulder blade, but mostly in the area of the front deltoidwhere thepec attaches. I'm seeing mydoc later this week. Advil and icyhot help a little but it aches all the time and really hurts if I raise my arm forward or to the side. Any idea what it might really be?
- Did you get a good warm up before doing decline presses? I bet you pinched some nerves on your shoulders due to repetitive strain from the presses. Active rest is essential in order for the strain to heal. It is a good idea to see a doctor to properly diagnose the problem. To prevent shoulder injury, I suggest you keep your shoulders healthy thru Simple Stretches, Range Of Motion and Strength Exercises. This will keep them solid strong and free from possible injury.
- Q: When i put on concealer can i cover with pressed powder instead of loose?
- Loose powder is preferable directly after applying foundation. It is ground finer than pressed and is made to melt into the makeup to help your foundation have longer wear with less shine. Pressed powder it great to touch up with later in the day. Or you can buy a pressed powder that has the coverage of a foundation. It shows cakey for the first few minutes and settles into a nice natural coverage. Hope this helps.....Good Luck!

- Q: Ok I was at a party last night and two psychos crashed in punching my friends and then chasing me into the living room. They cornered me and i was terrified so I picked up a small coffee table to use as a weapon but i was too scared to hit them. One bloke punched me and took the table off me (smashing me over the head with it twice) Luckily I took it well and managed to get away to get help..The guy lives in my area and im quite scared about pressing charges because he might want revenge. Should I do it? please help
- Well first off, if they came in and wasn't inivited to this party why didn't you call the cops on them, unless there were all minors drinking at the party? And how'd they barge in?? They were there thru the front door or what? And sue for what? don't really sound this is a courrt case it sounds more like a bunch of people that they think hot stuff and one got hurt so now lets whine? my thoughts only of course
- Q: I just read about how the Song dynasty is actually credited with the creation of the first printing press, but I'm a little confused about how it worked since the Chinese have over thousands of characters that stand for words and not letters or phonetic sounds. So how did their printing press work? Was there a character for each word as with the language? Thanks :)
- Ancient Chinese Printing Press
- Q: Did johannes gutenberg ONLY invent the printing press or did he invent something else
- He is the first to mass produce a printed English version of the Holy Bible.
