- Q: I drive a 99vw jetta and the coolant was leaking from it i took it to a repair shop they said the water pump was bad and that the seals on the water pump where bad that was defiantly where the coolant was leaking from. I replaced the water pump and drove my car this weekend no troubles, then this afternoon my coolant light came on and i put coolant in my car and it just started trickling out i called the repair shop they said it may just be a loose hose or clamp, is this true or am i looking at something worse than the water pump that has to be replaced?? or would that issue have already came up when they where looking for where the leak was coming from before it was repaired? please help
- The pump may have indeed been bad. Did the shop put on the new pump or did you do it yourself? If it was done by the shop, take it back and make them fix it correctly. You have already paid them for the work. If you did it yourself, it should be fairly easy to spot where the leak is coming from. It is also rare but possible that the pump you put on was bad out of the box from the parts store. Not likely...but slim possibility. Hopefully it is just a loose clamp or hose.
- Q: Im changing my water pump and it has a pully that the belt gos on in front of it and the pully has 1 big bolt in the middle of it and like 4 small ones around it and when i try to undo the bolts the pully turns and im not quite the mechanic but i do know that the pully has to come off 1st so how do i take out the bolts without the pully turning???? and yes the belt is off and battery id disconnected and the car is not hot it hasnt ran in days. and it has a 3.4 v6
- Leaving the belt on with tension to hold the pulley while you break loose the 4 bolts is the easiest way... you will have to come up with a way to hold it still while loosening the bolts... one way is to take a good sized flat tip screwdriver and while you are holding it wedged between the shaft and one of the bolts while breaking the other bolts loose..

- water pump are kind of difficult to replace you have to remove several parts to get to it. specially if is your uncle first time. my recommendation is if you want to do it yourself to save money, have some one (family member)that did it before, just in case. go to source i will post instructions look at Table of Contents or go all the way on the bottom of the page good luck

- It depends on the type of pump.Some pumps can others will burn out. Carpet cleaner type suction will happily cope with both air and water,old fashioned hand operated lift pumps do as well. Bilge pumps etc do not like running dry and will have to be reprimed to suck water if the get an air lock.

- Mechanical water pumps break because they have a shaft that goes directly into a water pump housing. That shaft is driven on the outside by the accessory drive belt. on the inside of the water pump housing their is a impeller(a disk like that of a old mill house in the forest next to a stream). between inside the pump housing and outside there is a rubber seal to keep the coolant in. Because the rubber seal is exposed to heat drying occurs on the outside causing the rubber seal to on day get hardened. On the inside the hot coolant keep the seal pliable and soft. when air gets inside the coolant system with water it causes the seal to dry on the inside of shaft seal. When heat is on both sides of the seal exposed to air cracking occurs faster causing the seal to crack all the way through and spill water. Electric water pumps for cars are some of the most compact and powerful water pumps around for their size. Due to the extreme under hood temps and the constant turning on and off to save gas the electric water pump for cars have a short life. It used to be electric water pumps were only used in the drag race area; due to electric failure. Not until recently have companies started to deploy them among small cars and also as secondary pumps for turbo and supercharger applications with having a main water pump being mechanical.

- if the water pump goes out then the car can over heat,and if it over heats too much the motor can blow.then you will have to buy a whole new motor.it's really not a big deal to fix..for you it will be,but for a mechanic its easy.here is a BIG tip for you....i'm a car guy i do this all the time...plzzzz do not buy the water pump from a mazda dealership,you will end up paying hundreds..go to a junk yard and get a used one they work just as good,and if you can go to a near by occupational center where they have an automotive class they only charge $20 if you bring your own part.....hope this helps

- Q: I have a 2000 chevy impala with 85K on it. I have heard/a weird rattle noise from under the hood for some time now.
