2.Description of Horizontal Split Casing Pump

 

Horizontal axially split casing, double volute multistage design. Impellers arranged in opposed groups; KSY is a double suction two stage pump for bigger capacity. KDY is a multistage single suction impeller pump for higher head, first stage double suction impeller design for low NPSH required. Removable wear rings protect the casing and impeller. The impellers are statically and dynamically balanced. The pump complies with the API 610 specification latest edition in all technical details. Special antifriction bearings on both sides and sleeve bearings with ring or forced-feed lubrication (axial bearing as segmental thrust bearing).

Q: I have had this water pump changed 2 times in 5 years is this normal for this car? It has a v6 motor.
i wouldn't think that was normal, but what do i know? point being.....yea water pumps, in my experience, are pretty difficultly to change out....no average Joe could do it.

It is very easy and straightforward. The hardest part is the fan clutch unless you have the proper tools. You have that part covered. DO NOT USE ANY SILICONE SEALER!!!!! Be sure all traces of old gasket are removed and install the new gasket dry. Use an anaerobic sealer on the wet bolts. Those are the ones that are through drilled into the water passages. Clean off the threads then use a light coat of sealer. I use either Permatex (brown stuff in the tube) or pipe joint dope. Now is also a great time to flush the system, replace thermostat, and drive belt(s).
Q: I just put a thermostat in my 92 chevy but the gauge still shows close to hot but go down to normal pretty fast and occasionally i her a loud sound coming from the area where the belt is but i can't pinpoint it. I replaced the pump about three years ago, could that be it again so soon?
Agree with motorhead. You (question asker) replaced the pump, did you see anything that could break? Only issue with GM water pumps is normally if the cooling system is abused and fluid never changed, which can lead to the impellers rotting away. If the water pump fails fails (not just a leaking seal, the normal failure mode) the engine will overheat. The waterpump is the only thing that moves coolant, if the coolant can't move, the engine will fail from overheating. Take the belt off and see what happens for yourself. Did you purge the cooling system if needed? Did you use a genuine AC Delco thermostat instead of whatever the parts store handed you (probably Stant)?

I don't know why, but the water pump costs between $125 and $160. That seems a little high. It probably retails for $186. Under normal conditions, you just get things out of the way, unbolt the old pump, clean it up and put the new one in. The problem is the other stuff that gets in the way. I'm just estimating the job will take 5-8 hours. Just multiply times the labor rate in your area. Don't forget the anti-freeze when you're done.
