- Q: what are some common problems that are possible in a car exhaust system? how can they be repaired? how can the exhaust system be maintained? (to prevent problems) (i.e. checking stuff, putting some kind of filter, or fluid etc.)
- There are many problems that could go wrong with exhaust systems. They just naturally corrode over time. If you live in an area where there's a lot of snow, you then have the salt additive added to the equation. So these systems rattle lose over time and or rust to death. Fixing them and repairing them using liquid metal is a temporary fix, because that stuff never lasts forever. So the most logical suggestion I would have for you is a stainless system, which are mostly seamless. The less joints you have the less places there are to fall apart. These systems, while more expensive, usually carry a longer warranty and also last longer. They are made of stainless steel, which tends to just get a little oxidation on it rather than rusting quickly. Thus, you put on the stainless system, but have it coated with a heat resistant rubber coating and you've got an everlasting exhaust. Pretty much look to replace your car before your exhaust ever again if you do this. Unless you own a Hondathose things run forever.
- Q: what is a decat exhaust system?
- none, if they are telling you 4 hp, they are feeding you a line of bs. most if not all sportbikes are so well tuned that changing a complete exhaust setup will not net you any gains in hp. they are for looks and for sound only. sorry to burst your bubble
- Q: I have a Toyota Tundra (2003, 6 cylinder). Do you have any suggested component changes?
- of course it can! The expansion of gasses in a good exhaust system will draw the waste gas out of the engine and can give a big power +! not so much your air intake but remember cool air is denser and gives you more power
- Q: Talked to a guy that used to be on drag racing team that competed in a lot of events around here. He installed my exhaust system. He said that on the cars they used to race (american muscle not imports) they used 1.5 to 2 inch tubing for their race cars. Why so small? My only guess was that they probably dont use cats, or mufflers so the smaller tubing gave them enough backpressure for the engine to run properly. Am i right, its been on my mind for awhile, I used 3 inch on my truck.
- yeah, that's the reason why. with no backpressure, torque off the line sucks.
- Q: I have a mercedes slk 230 that came with a very annoying exhaust system, Its very noisy. I wanted to take it off and just replace it with a normal quiet exhaust. I was wondering if anyone knew how much it would cost to replace? I do not know much about cars, but just as a side note if you look at the pipe, its one unit that runs the full length of the car, it is not broken down into units you can separate. Thank you!!
- first things first, if your carb is pretty well shot get that stuff first. as long as the 4bbl is adjusted correctly it will run better than now for sure also a spectre filter is a good idea. then go with exhaust. i would say x pipes arent very important and theyre expensive. go with 2 and a half inch pipe all the way back to some thrush weldeds shouldnt be very expensive. or if you like extreme sound go with glass packs which will be even cheaper. id say shopping around you can find someone to do the exhaust for like 200-300 bucks depending on what you want exactly. this can all work the other way around too. i mean if your carb works fine now you could do the exhaust first if you wanted. no matter which one you pick your performance will be helped for sure with proper adjustment
- Q: I‘m looking to get an exhaust system for my ‘01 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, but I can‘t seem to find any. I don‘t wanna buy a universal exhaust, because I want some decent horsepower gains. I was thinking if I could just purchase an Evo 5 exhaust and put it on, since the Evo 5 and the Mirage are the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
- No I don't think so. Please note with a stand alone exhaust system you will get very little performance gains (certainly none that are noticeable). really to get performance gains you need an overall program. The other issue - quite frankly - you are running a small block (if my spec sheet is correct) engine about 1.5l which new - stock profile generated less than 100hp. This is a fine daily driver but really it is not a candidate for performance enhancements (and thats why there is no product available in the aftermarket). Not sure if a system from the Evo would fit or not-cannot find any specs for that model, most Evo's ran with a bigger engine than yours. But again spending money for performance on this car will not give you any satisfaction. regards
- Q: On a 2000 Mazda MPV (V6), what happens if only the pipes are increased by 1/4 and maintaining stock muffler? Will there be any sort of increase in performance, if any?
- There is a lot more to exhaust system design than just pipe diameter and muffler flow. Naturally aspirated engines create exhaust pulses. Exhaust systems must be tuned to allow these pulses to help pull the exhaust out of the cylinders. They are tuned to work the best over a large RPM and load range. Increasing pipe diameter *may* increase HP or torque over a small part of the RPM band, but usually at the risk of losing power in other parts. This is where the old idea of back-pressure more torque. Opening up the exhaust often moves the power band up higher in the RPM range, resulting in lower torque in the lower RPM's.
- Q: 1998 C280 catalytic converter rattling. Must entire exhaust system need to be replaced?
- Yes the cat converter can be replaced separately. However, before you do so I would check to see if it is actually the culprit. Most commonly on Mercedes I have seen either the heat shields on the outside of the cat converter have come loose, usually from rust, or one or more of the rubber exhaust mounting brackets have snapped, which can allow the exhaust system to resonate a rattling sound as well.
- Q: Car enthusiasts or a true owner please answer, my father and I are debating
- Does your owner's manual call for additives? NO. Use what is recommended for your car. Make sure the oil meets the S ratings that is required. No other additives are needed, or should be used.
- Q: i have a 97 avalon and want to replace the whole exhaust system. what kind of system would i get? is there a basic exhaust system kit for cars? or do i need a special system for the avalon itself? the manifold pipe is rusted out and the rest is in pretty bad shape. just want to replace the whole thing and not have to worry about any other parts rusting and having to listen to the obnoxious exhaust leak
- Any muffler shop can handle this replacement. Drop by 2 or 3 for estimates.
