You must upgrade the entire system to see any real 'substantial' gains. A tail pipe MUFFLER will do nothing but make your car loud for no reason. You can also upgrade to a higher flowing catalytic converter as opposed to 'gutting' it out. Since you're required to have one and they make aftermarket pieces, you might as well get one as its usually a major choke point in an exhaust system.

The only way to find out why your check engine light came on is to pull the code. IF your car is rusted through, you may need to get a new car, rust repair can get pricey, but there is no way of telling without looking. A quick fix would be silicone sealant. Thanks!: an intake is very easy. generally just bolts on. if you want to go cheap get one from autozone but if you want a good one go for a big name like kn. that all is easy. exhaust is a lot harder. it is hard in that it still has to pass smog, and if you do not seal the pipes all the way you will lose power. to be honest if you are looking for it being cheap that's not going to happen. the only way to save money fixing up a car it to do your own work. so unless you have a pipe bender and a welder and a pipe cutter i would go to a muffler shop. plus at the shop they may tell you the best combo for your intake and exhaust performance on your vehicle.

Thanks: Buy a whole exhaust system not just a muffler, those universal mufflers that are welded on do a crappy job and won't add power, just lots of noise. Save up and look into the A'Pexi WS2 Exhaust System or the GReddy EVO2 Exhaust System. They're both really good systems, quiet for daily driving and not too noticeable but under full throttle they let you know they're there. Another way to make the car sound a bit better is to upgrade the Intake System. AEM, KN and Injen are some good brands. AEM makes some of the best intakes you can buy. Look into their Short-ram Intake, not the Cold-Air Intake, with the CAI you risk Hydrolock and on your daily it's not a good idea.
