- Q: Hi, I own a 2004 chev. venture and the water pump is getting noisy (most likely the bearings) I priced a refurbished one online at $18 and am wandering if this is a task I could handle myself, or if I'd most likely screw it up
- I don't work on cars, but my dad does. It seems like a water pump would be just as easy to replace as an alternator. Remove, replace, reattach hoses and/or belts. Get one of the repair manuals for your car from the auto store; that will walk you through it.
- Q: I have a water leak, and not from the radiator. It is on the side of the motor where the timing belt is. Could it be the water pump? or possibly freeze plugs? If so where are these?
- most likely the water pump. The water pump is under the timing cover and is driven by the water pump. Make sure that you replace the timing belt when you replace the pump.
- Q: I had my timing belt replaced @ 80k (now have 138k) and was told by new mechanic that the water pump was not replaced then. Do I need to have pump replaced? What will happen if I don't? Thx
- Pump is leaking if you see water, other than A/C under car or coolant is constantly getting low. If water pump goes car will over heat and can leave you stranded. If you are not going to keep car for more than a year don't worry about either unless pump is bad. If pump is bad just change the pump. No need to pay for timing belt if your not going to keep car. If Mech. scared you get a second opinion or take your Dad with you because some people will try and take advantage of females about cars, and I did say some not all.
- Q: how do you change the water pump
- Replacing the water pump requires removing the timing belt because it is timing belt driven, so the timing belt should be changed at the same time. Standard practice is to replace the water pump when the belt is changed to avoid duplicate labor later.
- Q: I just put a new water pump in my jeep and after I put it in I ran it and it seemed to have a small leak while it was running it seems like it was coming from the crank which is under the water pump so it might be a leak coming from the bottom of the pump. When I turn the car off it is no longer a leak its more like pouring water out. What do you think it can be? I put a gasket and the blue silicone gasket sealant all around it and on it before I put it in so I have no idea. Thank you for the help.
- The blue silicone has caused a hole in the water pump. Get it fixed now or the blue silicone will leak onto your engine causing more damage.
- Q: can i drive my car ,with a blown water pump, 5 miles to a service center?
- Probably not because most vehicles use a serpentine belt/drive belt to run the water pump and when the water pump goes the belt will most likely fall off. If you have an interference engine where the timing belt runs the water pump, then you could. It's not recommended, but I would do it if I couldn't do the repair myself.
- Q: I'm using an old Mitsubishi Lancer. Recently I changed my water pump it was leaking. To me it looked like a piece of metal, with a small fan thing (not motorized) How can it fail? There is no mechanics to it, just like a pipe with a fan (or turbine)I also messed with my radiator, I unhooked the main hose to clean out the coolant, since the plug was jammed. Could this have contributed to the failing of my water pump?
- That fan thing is called an impeller and when it spins it pumps coolant through the motor and radiator to keep it cool. It spins off a belt that is connected to the crankshaft pully and possiabley the alternator. That impeller and shaft spin on sealed roller bearings. These bearing will last a a lot of miles but they will wear out, and when they do the shaft moves out of round and wears out the seal that keeps the coolant from leaking out past the shaft. Over tighting of the drive belt will wear out the bearinge prematurley, but a pump will usually last 100,000 miles
- Q: i'm trying to make a small water fountain, i have a tiny motor that i can use, but i dont know how to use it to make the water go up :( haha heeeelpthanks in advance:)
- I doubt that your motor is waterproof. You would do better to just purchase one of the many fountain pumps all ready available at many home improvement centers or online. They are water proof and have the pump and motor all in one enclosure.
- Q: The role of impeller in water pump
- Pump impeller through the motor to drive rotation, so that the medium (water) by centrifugal force or lifting force, so that the medium has mechanical energy (kinetic energy)
- Q: I have just replaced the timing belts on my 94 Civic Si and my 00 Elantra GLS. Both were done at different shops, but i got the same hounding to replace the water pump when doing the belt. My Elantra has 66k and my Civic 85k and i know how important the timing belt is-especially with a negative clearance engine like the VTEC. previously, i've never been told to replace the waterpump with the timing belt til now. is this just a ruse to extort more money out of me, or is there some validity in what the guy behind the counter is saying??
- First, what determined the need for the timing belt? If it's due to be changed as part of the regular maintenance schedule, fine. And why do you need a fuel pump? If the car runs fine as it is, I would question that. The fuel pump is usually located in the fuel tank which can be a pain to replace, so I'm not sure that that total cost is comparatively unreasonable. BTW, when replacing the timing belt, it's usually recommended you replace the water pump at the same time, as it's located right there, and may prevent having to do the same labor again between belt replacements. You can also call various other shops in your area and get an estimate of what they would charge for the same service. Also, you can use the link provided to find a mechanic in your area who has good reviews recommendations from customers. Look for 'Find a Mechanic and enter your zip code for the info...(You may want to check out the whole site, for fun and car info)... Hope that helps! EDIT: Yes at 110k it should be due for the T-belt/water pump, now it's just shopping the deal!
