Q: This kid I went to school with drives a stratus with a stock eclipse motor in it with turbo and kamp;n cool air filter. I don‘t see the turbo connected to the cool air intake? How can this be? the piping i can see connected to the intake is plastic which runs into some stainless steel piping and goes back behind the motor where i can‘t see whats behind it. Could the turbo be mounted there and not directly with the cool air intake?
A turbocharger relies on the exhaust gases to spin an impeller (propeller-type mechanism). The other side if the impeller is exposed to the intake air causing more air to be pushed into the engine. The intake air is forced into the intake headers after the throttle body, which is downwind of the cold air intake system. On some vehicles, it is not east to see where the turbo is located just by opening up the hood.
Q: I have a 2006 dodge ram with the 5.7L Hemi, I was wondering which would give me more performance and mpg‘s, a cold air intake with plastic tubing or metal tubing? I need opinions, Thanks for the help.
AEM usually you cant go wrong with them they do a lot or Research and development on their products and they are dyno proven.
Q: I‘m looking to buy a good oneIt‘s about $300is it worth buying? Will it give me an extra boost of hp and help my engine a bit?I have a 2003 mitsubishi eclipse gt v6. It has 200hp but it has a slow start until it reaches second gear.Should I get a short ram instead or the whole 9 yards?Any experience w/ cold air intake ( not the ricer kind $50 autozone) please share it with me , thanks!!
cold air intake is a marketing gimmick since your car already has one from the factory, and the throttle body flows max air now, how can you make it flow more ? power chips are another waste of money, some times the engine lights pop on and the computer can try to compensate, but creates a lean condition, which is not a good thing, since running lean can burn up the motor, the only way to achieve real horsepower, is to build and engine with the cam and heads, and add a fuel system and bigger exhaust, a turbo is one way to add power, the problem with starting with small engines, is it takes a ton of money to make horsepower. A stock engine was designed to run with longevity in mind, anything you do to change this will shorten the life of the motor, if you want longevity and horsepower, you must build an engine using expensive high quality parts, we all would like an extra 100 horsepower, but without some major cash outlay, it is not going to happen. save your money, adding a turbo is an option, but finding a quality set up that is dependable is going to be fairly expensive, because all turbo s spin at high speed, and need super heavy duty bearings, (preferably with thier own lubrication set up) so some turbo will be better than others, but save your money, do some more research, and find the right set up that meets your needs. you will not get 15 horsepower as someone suggested, from a cold air intake, often times aftermarket intakes allow you to hear the air intake of the engine, this does not mean you are making more power.
Q: I own a 92 Chevy Silverado with the 4.3L V-6. I was considering putting a cold air system on it to increase gas mileage. I would like to know if it is worth it, and any recommendations on any particular system that works best.
As you said, like in Tron. As in like The Dukes of Hazzard and Batman and The Knight Rider and Herbie and the car in Harry Potter plus lets not forget Gone in 60 Seconds and Transformers the list goes on and on and on. None of it is real. Fantasy. On the subject of wind, I like how I can be riding my bike and break wind all I like and not have to worry about the other guy. But thats just me.
Q: I installed a cold air intake in my 1991 Honda prelude 2.0si. It seems way to quiet, you can‘t hear it at all only when you very first step on the gas. How can I get it louder? What can I do?
An intake isn't going to give you constant sound like an exhaust would. The only time you're really gonna hear it is during acceleration and when you're on the gas hard, otherwise it's gonna be quiet. You want to be loud go to AutoZone and buy one of their exhaust tips so you can be like the other 75% of Honda's running around with an irritating coffee can muffler. You could've easily gotten the same noise from your stock intake by removing it's resonator (silencer) without wasting $150 on an intake just for noise. I don't hate on modding Honda's, I just hate on doing it wrong.
Q: I added a Jet Chip to my car (2007 Magnum 3.5HO) and was very satisfied, now looking to add a little sound and a couple more ponies. KN is generally more expensive, but claims ease of installation and a great reputation Does anyone have experience w/ KN or other Brands names?
you need a maf it tells the ecu the exact mass of the air and per 14.7 pounds of air it injects 1 pound of fuel if yopu do not have it the comp will go to the one from the factory and it will probably be very lean if you get a new pipe you will need a new maf
Q: Whats good to look for when buying a cold air intake ? i.e. kind of material[[ for a 92 civic cx ]]
AEM is a leader, and perhaps your best bet. I'd go with a polished chrome finish since it will reflect more radiant heat than any of the powder coated models. It's important to thermally isolate the intake from as much conductive heat (coming from the throttle body), and from radiant/convective heat coming off the engine as possible. A cooler CAI pipe means a denser air-fuel mixture.more horsepower. Check out OUTLAW ENGINEERING's website for their thermoblock spacers that have proven to add HP by insulating the CAI from the throttle body.
Q: i bought a used Mazda MX-6 and other than cosmetic additions the only thing added was a cold air intake and a exhaust, what will a cold air intake do? hows it work?
Cold air intakes my give you 3 or 4 horses more depending on your tune. It is designed to come with a free flowing air filter sometimes mounted inside the fender well or away from the heat of the engine. The air travels through a solid tube to your intake. The incoming air is supposed to be cooler.
Q: So I have a 03 Hyundai elantra and my brother convinced me to buy this 20 dollar filter thing from advanced auto parts Like a cheap old air intake But today at the junk yard I saw one in mint condition A KN 57 Series FIPK Air Intake for 15 bucks Are cold air intakes a universal thing?? Or would that one be better then the one I bought for 20 bucks I looked up the regular price and it was upwards of 200. So if I can go back and grab it for 15 would it be better then the one I got now??
heres a couple things you might wanna know if you got an intake with a short arm,it is true it will be intaking hot air but its also been proven to give better top end output, while a cold air intake does infact breath in cooler air since it extends all the way to freash flowing air, due to its longer arm its output are usually seen frm low to mid range but assuming its a daily car cold air intake is a pretty good choice especially if its at a very good deal with a brand name.,as long as its a aftermarket intake theres always a way to make it fit or turn any intake into a cold air system
Q: does it have to be specific for my car or can i just get one from auto zone and put it in my car will it fit
I also think the 600 is way too much. No one will change my mind. Whatever experience you have isn't enough. Just the mention of reduced power modes tells me this. In 25 years of riding, the reduced power has always been in the right wrist and left foot. I see Jon got a thumb down, but he's right. Under 18 cannot sign legal contracts.
