Q: Better or worse for air intake?
Well if you moved the air inlet to a cooler place like under the car, down in a wheel well, etc then it will pick up some power from cooler inlet temps. Also if you used a KN type cotton filter rather than a paper filter you will pick up some due to better flow. The filter type is really only worth 3 to 5 HP or so in the real world. Now the inlet temps (cold air) can be worth a bit more. Gen rule of thumb is for every 10* cooler the inlet air temp is you gain 1% HP This can be anywhere from 10-30 HP easy
Q: I drive a Honda S2000 AP2, my mechanic friend says that there aren‘t many parts that increase power in S2000‘s without having to spend loads of money, as well as a lot of owners saying that the only cold air intake worth buying is 1000$! (according to a s2000 forum). Any S2000 owners care to share their experiences?
There is no point to a cold air intake. While many intakes do have a preheater, that is to improve gas economy. So it costs mileage to have a cold air intake. But then you can just disable the preheater, and don't have to buy anything. The cold air intakes actually usually just have a larger air filter, so they can take in more air. Which really is just like being able to push down further on the gas pedal. And that is not really a good idea. The engine will not last long if you do that. It is also true that a metal intake pipe instead of plastic, and one with smooth bends, will work slightly better due to resonance. But that is fairly minor on most cars. The intake would need equal lengths to all cylinders in order for that to do any good.
Q: What Does Cold Air Intake Do To A Car? Does It Add Somethin?
There are two types of cold air intake. Forced air intake- this is basically where an inlet is added to the air intake in a location where you will get more air flow into your intake than normal. Pod Filter- these are filters which are either boxed or have a resin coating inside it to cool the air as it passes through your intake. That is the very basics!! A cold air intake simply allows your car to suck in more/cooler air, therefore making for a cleaner combustion in the cylinders, resulting in slight power gains or a quicker response in the throttle. It Basically allows your car to breathe better.
Q: i have a 96 3.8l v6 camaro that i am looking to get a little more power from (but not v8 kind of power, or mileage). i i am planning on doing either a cam or a (used) conservative turbo setup. both of those are far in the future though. in the meantime, i was wondering about a ram air setup. i havfe not done any research on ram air mods for my car and i dont even know if there is one made. before i spend a ton of time researching this mod, coudl you say, as a general statement, if a ram air intake would do anything (at all) and would it be anywhere worth the price to do it? thanks
Look, you want the truth GM has made everything from about 1986 and up with factory cold air setup. Aftermarket cold air systems does nothing, just adds a shiny pipe Most ram air systems does nothing on most cars. Yes ram air is true and yes it works but you do not even start to see a benifit from ram air effect untill 90 mph speeds and will not get the full gain untill around 140 mph or so. You may be able to gain alittle power by moving your air inlet to a diff spot. Stock is factory cold air but not in the best of places. Use an infared temp gun Drive you car for 20 miles or so and measure the temp of your air filter, vs outside of car, vs other spots around engine bay. You can pick up 1% power per 10* change in inlet temp So if you can move the filter somewhere 20* cooler you will gain 4 HP
Q: i Have an 08 Honda civic. I just installed an after market intake. after driving around a lil while my check engine light turned on. I figured it was the computer getting use to the new intake, But it has been two days and it is still on. I check all of my hoses clamps and fitting everything is tight. I don‘t know why it hasn‘t turned off.
you need to get your MAF adjusted to withstand the amount of air that is being induced to your engine without tripping the check engine light code.
Q: Hey, i am thinking about installing an intake system on my 2002 Subaru legacy L. Does anyone have any recommendations for a specific intake. And also if I do install one, do I have to adjust the ECU or any other component in the car? Thanks
go with a kn air intake. the other no name ones sometimes throw the check engine light. and no you dont need to adjust your ecm. the car may stall for 5-10secs until it starts. just hold the key in the start position until it starts. the car might feel a little funny until the computer picks up the increase in air flow
Q: Hello, Im currrently in Aghanistan talking with some buddies on mods that we want to do on our vehicles upon our return. Now what i want to do in particular is put a CAI on my 99 Tahoe along with a throttle body spacer. I already have the Flwmstr cat back with a KN filter set up; now my question is will I get a lil more mpg‘s with those few additions? Im not necessarily interested in power, although I do tow every now and again. im also easy on the pedal as well, so help me out gear heads, will that be a good invstmnt and will i be looking at a slight increase in mpg‘s? Thnx

Q: I‘m thinking about getting a short ram air intake in my car will it increase the horsepower? Also, I‘ve noticed that they have Short Ram, Cold Air, and Complete Cold Air Intake. Choice of 3. Which one is better and which will give me the most increase in horsepower and torque? I have a Celica GT-S the RPMS are 9000 redlined, and 180 horsepower factory level. The exhaust is already fairly big so I‘m not concerned about getting a bigger exhaust muffler. I need an air intake for my car. I also heard pulleys are good for more torque as well. I‘m going to get one of those next. How much increase in horsepower would a racing pulley give my car?3 seconds ago - 3 days left to answer. Report It
It will depend on what brands you get. Some will tell you, and give you, more than others. For that car I would go with cold air intake myself and would guess it would give you an extra 5-10 horses but as I said the numbers will vary. As to the pulley they work in a different way. They do not eally add horsepower the just use the power in a different way, almost like turning your air condition off you do not get more power but the power that is already there gets used to turn the wheels instead of make the air cold. It is more tchnical than that of course but thats the easiest way I can think to explain it. For the power increse that you will see to the wheels it will depend on the size of the pulley(s) but if it were me I would just stick with the cold air intake if this is a daily driver.
Q: I have a injen cold air intake on my mitsubishi galant 2.4l I4 auto, and with winter coming up I was going to switch to short ram im just wondering if launch would improve if the air takes less time to travel.
On a cold start, the throttle response for a short ram is much better than a cold air under any conditions. A good short-ram maintains good airflow velocity, as opposed to a cold air, with its longer piping. Once the engine bay heats up, the short ram loses a bit of its edge as the air is less dense, leading to less power. However, as I mentioned, on a completely cold start the short ram can give a pretty ridiculous launch. I'd recommend it over the cold air; the overall power difference is negligible, to be honest, and the cold air comes with more risks: Hydrolock, filters are lost easier, etc. And in my opinion, a short ram just looks much better anyway.
Q: i have a 1999 dodge avenger and i put a custom cold air intake with a filter (no cover) does that add hp? its a short ram too
It might add a tiny bit, but not very much. Cold air has more density, thus it will draw more gas as it passes through the intake manifold. But if the inlet to the air intake, is under the hood, it will pull in the hot air from the engine.so it needs to be so that it gets its air from outside the car, like near the front of the radiator. This air is cooler and denser, so it pulls more gas into the system. That is the idea behind it. Hot air, is thinner.
