- Q: Hi, I need help with identifying an old rug. A friend of mine, an Englishman who now resides in Florida, possesses this rug. It is white with white tassels, and a black border around the rug itself. The design is quite intriguing as red, black and white are the only colors used. Repeated motifs are a black circle made into quarters, colored in with red, two rows of three black triangles with red dots on them, three sideways flames with lines around them, and what looks like three chickens or three birds, repeated throughout the rug.. My friend was born in Karachi Pakistan in 1965 and this rug was given to his parents by Pakistani friends at the time of his birth...if anyone knowledgeable can help me I.D. this rug, he and I would thank you. We think it may be a Muslim prayer rug...peace. The birds do not show eyes (an Islamic prohibition!)thanksxxxany knowledgeable, serious help would be appreciated.
- I've had limited dealings with antique rugs; I used to assist an antiques dealer who dealt with a good number of rugs, including prayer rugs. I do not think from what you are relating that the rug is a Muslim prayer rug. Prayer rugs incorporate the design of a mihrab; that is, the niche in the wall of mosques used to indicate the direction of Mecca, an important consideration in Islamic prayer. If there is no indication of a direction on the rug, it is most likely not a prayer rug. Also, a well-used prayer rug would show signs of wear and tear, particularly wear in the spots where a worshipper knelt for their prayers. If you can see no obvious wear in areas to indicate use, it cannot be an antique. It sounds like a simple household rug of local Pakistani manufacture, not much older than 40 years. The bird design you describe is common, and I have seen it myself in many rugs.
- Q: I am redoing a room. Should it be painted before new carpeting? I want the baseboards nicely painted. Just not sure what should be done first.
- You should always paint first. You might get paint on carpet and you could tell more about the kind of carpet it would go with the paint.
- Q: We got a wool area rug a month and a half ago. It sheds bunch. Is this normal? thanx
- with wool rugs this is very common. When they make the rug lots of little pieces of loose wool get into the air and end up in the carpet itself. Its not a problem, vacuum lots, use a vacuum with a power head.
- Q: i have red juice stains on my tan carpet. how can i get it out without bleaching the carpet. i used a carpet cleaner and it just lightened the stains. what to do next? thanks :)
- Try hand sanitizer. I once got sharpie (which is permanent rly hard to get out) on my shirt. I soaked my shirt in a dish of hand sanitizer it immediately came out. Once it was dry it looked like it did before the sharpie. So just take a towel soak it in hand sanitizer press it on the carpet stain wait 1 min or 2
- Q: My cat scratches the rugs in my house to the extent that rug nap is scattered all over every morning. We have both vertical and horizontal scratching posts in which he displays no interest. I tried a product called quot;No Scratchquot; which doesn't work either. What else can I do?
- Make sure every time he scratches the rug you tell him off. If he goes to scratch the rug, put a scratching post near him and give him a treat when he uses it. My cat hates using scratching posts and prefers to scratch a wooden plank we put down for him in the garden.
- Q: I really can't find any info on installation online. I have even been at hardware sites and was given a generic explanation. Do you remove your old carpet?
- I`m with Wheeza on the first part, however, for actual installation Start on the walls that will be *Seen* first when you enter the room. That way your pieces won`t be as visible esp if the walls are not square and you have a 3 inch piece at one end and 6 inches at the other end (don`t laugh, it happens). You can use Any carpet glue available at Home Depot and as Wheezer says, hardware stores using a notched trowel. Don`t spread too thick `tho or it will smush up through your tiles esp if thin and make a heck of a mess. Just make sure it`s not flammable. My brother and I set fire to a kitchen once not realizing the stuff was flammable. When the fumes hit the water heater it spread over the floor where I was spreading and up the walls (old house with flammable paint/thinner used) quicker than we could blink. Hope this helps. I`m sure it will be pretty (: Need any tips on how to trim it or anything? RT

- Q: how wold i go to cleaning a spilt ashtray on a carpet?my little brother pushed the ashtray off the desk and it went all ove the carpet now theres a big grey stain. i sweeped most of the ash up now its just stuck in the carpet.i tryed OXYGEN stain removal spray and that just made it greyer.also if i dont get it out right away will it cause mold?
- first moisture causes mold if not properly dried not ashes and second if you steam clean the area it will let up rather easily and wont stain the carpet even if left for a while.
- Q: I have to clean a carpet that has a red cool aid stain on it? Since it is not my carpet, I have no idea how long the stain has set into the carpet. I am willing to try just about anything short of a beach based cleaner? The carpet is an off white, so it's extremely noticable. Any suggestions, or is this a hopeless case?
- Try using Resolve carpet cleaner. Resolve gets out the toughest stains.
- Q: I have really sensitive feet and need really good carpet for my floors. What do I need to look for when I go shopping for some? thanks
