- It's common nature for Cats to scratch, surfaces they like, so if I were you I would remove the Rug from them as soon as possible, or do this declaw them and you would not have any trouble from them anymore, I know that this might seem cruel but my Sister has Cats that she de-claws them when she brings them into her House and the cats seems not to mind that they do not have their claws with them anymore.

- Rolled carpet would be a better choice. Carpet tile would be difficult to vacuum if it was not glued down. For the same reason you couldn't put carpet pad under carpet squares. Carpet pad will help with warmth and also help reduce the tile grout joints from showing through to the carpet surface. Carpet pad is not structural, but it should help at least for a while. Think about your door bottom clearance. Do you have enough space between the bottom of your doors to add carpet?

- if it is chemical fiber carpet, then brush it dry with a soft cloth and cut the fiber, and then use the hot steam smoked pure wool carpet for ten minutes. you could also cut off the fiber where is aspfalt with a knife.

However we just found out that the carpet is GLUED down and therefore a much bigger project to remove it than we once thought. So, we were wondering if the vinyl can be installed on top of the carpet. Like I said the carpet is glued down and it is very low and smooth there is very little give to it when you walk on it.
