- Q: How much carbon does the average diesel-powered (not hybrid or diesel-electric) freight train engine emit per ton-mile?
- All diesel locomotives actually are now self-generating electrics. The diesel turns a generator that powers YOOOOJ electric motors geared to the drive wheels. IOW the electric part is the transmission between the engine and wheels. As for carbon output Assume 0.4 # of fuel per horsepower per hour. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!

- The specific understanding of the price of the unit should know the basic information about the brand, configuration, power, etc..
- Q: I know that they could re-surface to re-establish a normal supply of air but what about when they were under attack and couldnt surface for long periods of time,wouldnt those engines use up a lot of the oxygen inside the sub?
- Either the submarine remained close to the surface with a pipe (snorkel) supplying air, or they stopped the diesel engine and relied on batteries. Some experiments were made where the submarine would bring oxidizer (oxygen or sometime oxygen peroxide) in tanks. But of course the supply was limited.

- Q: I have a 1992 Toyota Tercel that sits in my yard. It ran at one time, but has been driven so little that it now no longer starts. Had this problem one time before and paid someone to fix it. They replace the fuel pump to get it started again. Other issues are lost title, back left tire seems locked, and busted windshield.I hate to just trash this car and wonder how difficult would it be to turn the motor into a backup power generator for my house? Is it feasible? One of our sister companies at work has a diesel engine that acts as a backup power for their computer room, so I wondered if I could possible do the same for my home.Any suggestions?
- Almost anything is possible if you spend enough time and effort on it. The real question is: Is it worth it? What you have is a crappy motor in a junk car. Take it out of the car remove the transmission. Attach the engine to a motor mount like an I beam box frame that you have fabricated. Attach a generator unit to the end of it. Then you need to fabricate a speed governor of some type to keep the engine running at 1800 rpm to generate 60cycle power. Lets not forget your crappy high mileage engine. It might work for a while but after all of this effort you will probably wish that you rebuilt it. OR You can just buy an 8KW generator for $2000 JUNK THE CAR.
- Q: I am trying to find the value on a generator we’re trying to sell which is becoming a real headache since the thing was made in China. All I know about it is it was made by Shanghai Tractor and Internal Combustion Engine Corp and it’s a 20kw diesel generator. It’s about 5 years old but has only been used once since we purchased it. How would I go about finding the value for this generator? I need to have it sold as soon as possible.
- Companies like China Star have become famous for diesel generators, so being from China is not a negative. Just look up any US made generator and reduce by about %30 to get value. I think a US generator of that size, which is sufficient for a whole house, should run about $2500. So as used slightly, I would start around $1800 I think. But you may have to come down to $1000 if the market happens to be slow. Check on Craigslist to compare. I am only guessing off the top of my head. It is contractors who buy them the most, and few people are building right now.

- Q: I have an idea, if a steam locomotive's boiler was heated by a metal heater instead of a fire, how much less maintance would be needed as it does not produce any ash or soot because it has no fire.

- Q: I want to shut it inside a small room, but will it not suffocate ? Which part of the gen set should be moved out of the room ?
- This is not a good idea. This generator is more than just loud, it poses a serious health and safety threat. The exhaust gasses from the generator have to be vented to the outside or the carbon monoxide they contain will kill you. Diesel fuel is a fire hazard and without proper fireproofing you will end up with a serious fire. Finally, the generator has to be provided with a separate supply of outside air both to ventilate the space to prevent overheating and to supply air for the engine.

- J P-8 is a better hotter burning deisel fuel they use it in the military on diesel motors as well as generators
