Q:I live on an island and we only have one power company they have taken our power away from us and because we were stealing power from them and would have to pay a hefty fee which we decided not to pay. we are running on a diesel generator right now but i was wondering if natural gas or propane generators are cheaper and or more efficient. ive checked the gas suppliers website for prices but it wasnt very helpfull.I would need a generator that is about 15 kW
If you have a natural gas pipeline then that's what I would use. Nat gas burns the cleanest, no soot, no mess, no fuel filters to clean, the motor oil lasts longer, no tanks to get water and gunk in. no fuel stabilizers needed, no fuel spills and no tank certifications, etc. With a pipeline you won't have to go shag and store fuel and you won't run out. Even in a wide spread power failure the nat gas is usually not affected. If you have to lease or rent a nat gas tank THEY have to certify it against leaks.
Q:i have a 7.5 onam diesel generator that runs for 15 min and shuts down i get a code 33 (overheating)I change coolant, cap and thermostat also checked air flow Still no luck.any ideas anyone
This may sound stupid, but check the belt. Make sure it's actually on there. The Onan QD's sometimes throw a belt. I have seen them break too. Make sure that's on. You may have an internal water pump issue as well - impeller fell off, etc (rare but possible). Another issue could be a blocked radiator. If your radiator is blocked with sludge, you may not even know. I usually check various spots on the block, thermostat housing and radiator while running with a infrared temperature probe to see if it's actually getting hot BUT BE CAREFUL doing that because there's a risk of damaging your unit. That's actually a last resort thing. It may just be a bad high temp switch. But make sure everything else is right first. Full radiator, belt, t-stat (you already did). Oh, I just thought - make sure you have the right temp t-stat in there. The one I have in the shop (1997 7.5 Kw HDKAJ Spec D) takes a 71 Degree C (160 degree F) one. Anything higher will set off the high temp system I believe.
Q:i mean from off state to ON State, the amount of diesel it reqiures to burn out.
Very little. Less than it takes to run at power while underway. The fuel lines are only so big, and it can't flow fuel any faster than that. There is a myth that machines take a LOT of energy to start up. Some people say it takes as much power to start your PC as it does to run it for 30 minutes. The same is often said of fluorescent lights. That is not true - it is essentially never true. It is used as an excuse to avoid shutting the thing down. Why can't they? Because the pipe or wire supplying the fuel/energy is only so big. If a PC took that much energy to start up, it would trip the circuit breaker. The energy also would have to go somewhere, and energy always goes away as heat. A massive surge of startup energy would be a massive surge of heat, which usually burns or explodes a thing. So no -- devices generally do NOT use massively more energy to start up than they do to stay running. Some times might have a startup surge of double, or perhaps triple - such as a hard drive or compressor spinning up. But nothing more than that, and only for an instant - too fast for most circuit breakers to trip.
Q:I don't see why I couldn't use my car's engine as a power generator. I would only need maybe 1000 watts. The car is a 1990 Ford F350 diesel.
You'd be wasting too much fuel, though it is possible. 1) replace the existing alternator with some super-heavy-duty ones, ones that go in minibuses and such. As you aren't going to power any AC or such, you can probably power two of them together or with a Y formation. 2) Disconnect the trans and anything else not needed (AC, etc.) This is to make sure th engine run at max efficiency, minimal drag. 3) Get a high-cap inverter, to convert the 12V DC back into 120V AC. This will need to have some serious cooling for itself. Depending on your setup, you should be able to generate 500-1000 watts depending on the capacity of your alternators and capacity of your batteries. I'd recommend you replace the batteries w/ some industrial-sized ones like 8D (about 120 LB each) and feed your power inverter from the battery. Don't forget a good UPS / surge protector just in case.
Q:Having a basic background in electric and family moving into a remote prefab home with no electric, water, or gas, I decided to help. House and work shed electric requirements are simple, totaling a possible 5kwh at a given time to the shed, and 7kwh to the home. Obviously the home will have constant electric requirements (fridge, fans, etc). I cannot imagine it is economical nor efficient to run a diesel generator 24/7 for energy production as needed. Here are my questions:1. Should I use a stand-alone or emergency backup generator.2. Should I go with the conventional wisdom of choosing a generator that operates at 80% capacity for 1005 of my needs. IE: I need exactly 12kw maximum, so a ~14kwh generator.3. Solar panels have storage batteries. Can I use 12v or 18v, or an industry specific battery to only operate the generator for several hours a day for storgae of power? I know this is incredibly inefficient, any alternatives?Any help is greatly appreciated. Just need to be pointed in the right direction.
I think a stand alone gennie would be ok
Q:I have a generator overseas and it has been giving me problems. It ran for 7 days, died due to over heat. fixed that prob, now it wont start, gives me a code 0097 01, water in fuel. but the sensor is good, wires read good. At a brick wall here.
I looked online and this company makes everything from small gas driven to large diesel driven. You say the code is for water in the fuel and if it's diesel water would ruin the injectors so it very well could not allow it to start for that reason. At a minion you need to tell us a little more. Did it shut its self down for the over heat or did it size and shut down? that is a good point to start with.
Q:i recently bought a reflux still it requires a 120 volt water pump to run it so my problem is i have the pump i just cant figure out how to get power i cannot use a gas or diesel generator cause it is to loud moon shining is illegal so the generator will get me caught i need a way to power the 120 volt water pump quietly and i don't got a lot of money in my budget so i need a way to power it for under a hundred dollars
You need a 12 volt to 120VAC inverter that can power the pump. If you can get your car near the still, you can hook the inverter to your car battery. You need to start the car every so often and recharge the battery. I hope you car engine is quiet enough. Might want to have a spare battery in case you run it down too low to start the car.
Q:If it is that equation then if i ran a 500 gallon diesel generator under full loadsaying at about 3.5MPG will i get 1250 hours to get 52 days?!?!?!? or am i off on equation or my theory????
Conversion? They are calculating two different things. The reason something would be measured in work hours instead of mileage is for the fact the equipment does not in fact travel under its own load or it spends more time at a stand still. Work hours tend to be used on a lot of construction equipment and other things that stay stationary for long amounts of time thus creating wear on the unit though it is not moving and adding miles so they use hours to calculate how old the unit is or when it needs to be serviced next. You can never get an actual equality from these two different units as one measures time usage/fuel and one measures distance/fuel if you were calculating to find a run time for example. ***additional*** There would be no equation for MPG that you are looking for if converting from hours. Are you looking for how much fuel is consumed over a length of time? That's the only way to calculate fuel consumption would be over time vs. over a distance as MPG is.
Q:I know that when a coil is moved between magnets, it produces electricity. how does a generator work without magnets ?one more thing I want to know, what makes the generator turn on when the light go out ?
Doesn't. Rotor (w/ magnets) spins in a stator (coil). When power transfer switch detects a loss of line power, isolates line feed (to prevent linemen from getting zapped), lines up load feed (to house or wherever) and trips starter circuit to gen-set. Or, you go out to shed, shut off your main, plug in your auxiliary cord, and pull-start the SOB.
