- Q: An internal combustion engine runs more efficiently at constant speed. If it was run to charge the batteries when needed, via a generator, it seems to me it would be much more efficient than today's dual mode hybrids. This is essentially what diesel-electric locomotives do, and they get much better gas mileage than cars.
- Truly it has to do with type of fuel to create energy. So using whatever type of fuel you want to create a specific amount of energy, say to move a vehicle, you end up not considering the type of fuel but the cost of fuel. Seriously, if gas was a couple of cents a gallon who would care about alternate fuels. - That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

- the injection systems only variable is for the control of rpms during operation. during the start up process rpms are less than operation. yet the system delivers the same amount of fuel as the lowest setting. the fuel system, much like any other machine, is a constant. feed rate and pipe i.d. do not change magically. to throw in more fuel than the cyclinder can take would be destructive. variances can occur during hard starting situations (cold climates). this is the same as the choke on a car. diesels do not have this as they employ whats known as glow plugs which are essentially little plugs inside the cyclinders that preheat the chambers making it easier to start. since locomotives do not use this technique, this is why you will see them idling when not being used in a cold environment. in essence, its a royal b***h to start one when cold. never the less, to accurately know the fuel consumption rate (gph) at start up, you will have to contact the manufacturer to see if these figures are available. highly unlikely they would have these figures as opposed to actual operational gph which is where the do their testing.

A UPS uses a large battery and a high powered inverter circuit to produce mains power but is not expected to power equipment for very long, just long enough to shut them down safely without loss of data.
