- Q: I thought I had found a great place to rent but after reading reviews I found out they charge extra rent monthly for pets and the noise is bad being next to the AFB. Additionally some residents complained that their electric bills were 800 a month. I expected high, but that seems higher than anything else I have read by other people who live there. Can anyone give me an idea of where would be ideal to look for rentals? I have a middle school and a high school aged kids and two small pets. I don't want to live in a dump and our rental budget is about 2000 a month. Any advice regarding location is greatly appreciated!

- It's funny you should ask because I was just researching the wind energy subject while looking at getting a job with a company that makes generators. Generally I've found that it isn't! Wind power is usually expected to be supplimental to the power grid because you can't depend on it 24/7. The only exceptions to this are remote areas where they have no power grid access and even then they usually have diesel generators too. I have seen small ones on sailing boats where I'm sure it just tops up their batteries. Waste byproducts are zero or even negative. I say negative because in a lot of places the excess power is fed back into the power grid reducing the need for the other power stations to pollute as much. In fact the only bad things I've heard are from those that think they are an eye sore, those that think they are noisy (which generally are not) and those that think birds will crash into them. it's funny that they don't complain about the glowing ones that nest at my local nuke generating plant tho ;o)

- You don't say what the generator problems are. It may be undersized for the AC units you are trying to run plus other things you are trying to run. The AC unit may require all of the generator's capacity for about 2 seconds to start. So if one AC is running, there may not be enough capacity to start the second AC unit. What other things are you running off the generator at the same time? The 6,500 watt generator can only supply a maximum of 27 amps out of the 240 volt outlet or 15 amps out of each of the 120 volt outlets or any combination that does not exceed the 6,500 watt capacity of the generator. A diesel engine has nothing to do with the capacity of the generator. Diesel engines are used on larger capacity generators or continuous duty generator sets. The generator itself doesn't care what type of engine is spinning the rotor. Will the generator run just one of the units? If it does, then my thoughts are the generator doesn't have the capacity to run the loads you have.
- Q: I was thinking about buying used car batteries from the junk yard and connecting them with jumper cables then testing the connected batteries with a battery tester to see how many volts it has. I havent tried this yet so I dont know if it will work do you guys have any idea on how to make a generator so I wont have to pay for power
- Back to the idea of saving money, a gas powered generator is going to cost more than the utility power, a windmill made from scrap parts might a return on investment quicker than the 10 years solar cells might take. If you have different day and night energy rates, you could store cheap off hour power if your batteries to run things during expensive peak hours, though the electronics involved would take a significant time to pay off. Utilities have experimented with storing off hour energy in flywheels and compressed air underground tanks.

- Q: I want to build a diesel engine driven generator. The type of gen I have is asynchron, 400/690 V, 7,5 kW, 9,4 kVA and I was told that I need to stimulate it with capacitors (the unit is supposed to work without connection to a public netstand-aloneisland-service). Who can give me instructions how to do the el. part, size/type of capacitors etc?
- Because it lacks a separate field circuit, an induction generator cannot produce reactive power. In fact, it consumes reactive power, and an external source of reactive power must be connected to it at all times [1]. So you are right that you will need a three-phase capacitor bank at the output terminals (delta-connected). How to size the capacitors? That depends on a few things. Namely what kind of loads are going to be attached to it. I presume this is going to be an emergency generator operating alone (most induction generators are used this way nowadays). In that case, your capacitor bank will need to account for the generator consuming reactive power and the loads consuming reactive power. So, if you know what you are going to connect to the generator, figure up an estimate of the total reactive power of your loads. Then estimate how much reactive power your generator consumes (not sure how to do this; maybe estimate from your 7.5kW and 9.4kVA ratings?). Finally, to size your capacitors equate the total power consumed by gen and loads to this formula: estimated_3phase_power_consumed 3*(line-to-line_volt)^2/X where X 1/(2*pi*freq*C) Solve for C and there you go. My source indicates that the output voltage for an induction generator can vary quite a bit with varying inductive load, so bear that in mind and maybe oversize the caps a bit. Also, the types of capacitors should be able to withstand AC obviously and be rated within your expected operating temp, etc, etc. Good luck.

I don't want a gas/diesel generator as I don't want to have to fight everyone else to get gas for a generator. I've been only able to find one solar generator that would seem to work for my home. Any suggestions?
- A solar powered generator would certainly not be what I would want in an emergency.

- A diesel engine can run on any oil,even lube oil.
