- no expert on the rail industry but i dont believe any US company uses a strictly diesel freight train any more. they have all been diesel electric for awhile now. as far as carbon they should still be lower than a comparable amount of semi's

- The old style, pre- electronic wash machines used that same principle. They had a relatively small motor and used one or two huge capacitor's to get the motor going. Those capacitor's save up the maximum amplitude on the voltage sine wave (120V) and bleed out the power when the amplitude reverses each 1/60 th of a second. You might luck out, but I'm not sure if the AC compressor motor is an induction motor like the wash machine motors are so check out how to wire the capacitor in the circuit first and if it works with a compressor motor. It should, come to think of it, a lot of compressor's have capacitor starts s I can't see why a refrigerator compressor would be much different. You did say the running wattage of the generator is enough to keep the fridge going.right?

- In AC side connect a series high current Choke with less no of turns take the out put use a High current bridge Diodes with suitable heat sink.For regulating out put ,In the series choke place a Dc winding that can be excited by a separate dc circuit, Increase saturation will give same voltage decrease excitation will give drop in voltage.It is like magnetic Amplifier.Set the out put voltage with pre set point or a regulating circuit.I have given rough Idea If you want further detail PM me (This only cheapest method unless you have use thyristor or others to con troll may be expensive)

- Sounds like a ford industrial unit. There SHOULD be a number or number plate somewhere on the block, generator, and/or frame. A possible search, assuming it is a generator unit, would be the GENERATOR manufacturer.

- Like others said - nothing new about it. Diesel-electric tries to combine the advantages of a (diesel) combustion engine with those of an electric engine. You get the low RPM torque of an electric engine without the need for a gearbox and the range of a diesel without the need for a lot of heavy batteries. In addition, you can run the diesel continously with good efficiency. Disadvantage: you have to carry both the diesel and the electric parts around. For large installations, this can make sense since you save the weight of the gearbox.
