Q: How many Panels would I need to make sure that I cover my 1600 kwH? I actually want to try and generate about 3000 so I can sell back to the grid.
I just checked my last SMECO bill: We (two adults, one dog, 4 computers) used 1073 kWh last month. (We're in southern Maryland. Everything in our townhome is electric.) That being said: the reserve is in the batteries - and I believe you should have all you need- and a VERY good inverter, and a back-up inverter as soon as you can buy one. And, unless you live in Phoenix, I think it's a very costly solution. BUT I'M NOT UP TO DATE! In 1998 I moved to an island without power. At that time solar panels were too expensive 'though most attractive. Wind power was a real alternative - but it, too, was too expensive. I bought a 5kw diesel generator - and put-up with the starting and stopping, the broken fan belts, the oil changes all the crap associated with having an engine on your back but it served us well: We ran that offensive sucker about two hours a day, it fed our batteries (we had 12) and we lived operating table saws, microwaves, lights, from them. Well: Your supplier can tell you the daily production-per-panel for your latitude you can build-in your own safety factor (need 1600? plan on 2000?2400?) Maybe go a bit on the cheap right now and have a fairly inexpensive gas generator as cloudy day back-up? (Actually, the back-up generator is not a bad idea wherever you live. If you're building, wire it in!) Man! Talk about a lecture!

Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt. But, and this is quite a big but. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.

Unfortunately, hydrogen is not really a fuel - it is like the lithium in a lithium battery - it is just part of a chemical system for storing energy. * Energy is stored by separating hydrogen from water - and energy is then released by combining hydrogen with oxygen to make electricity in the car, creating water again. This is a reversible chemical process, exactly how a battery works. The energy does not come from hydrogen, typically it comes from the electricity used to separate hydrogen. The hydrogen stores the electricity, just like a battery does. * But the hydrogen cycle I have described is much less efficient than other battery technologies. So battery powered EVs are the most energy efficient.

A qualified electrician can install a proper receptacle into which you feed power from your generator and does not risk harming the linesmen.

Even some older Gen-Sets have contacts for a remote start switch. This is where you might wire in sensors to detect when commercial power is lost. You may install a relay to actuate those contacts. You can control that relay with a computer controlled module that is run by your software. The computer you have installed the thumb scanner on can control this. If the software is for this specific generator, then it may already include a remote start, as well as a logger to record start and stop times. Kits are often available.

You haven't told us the generator wattage. Your generator must have enough to power the house properly, or the unit they bought is defective.
