Q: Hello friends.I had to make a list of equipment for a civil construction company. Among the equipment were generator and diesel engine. For generator, i am very clear that it is used for alternate power generation in case of electricity un availability. What is the purpose of diesel engine? Where is is used? Guide me please.: Just about every piece of equipment powered by an internal combustion engine found at a civil construction site is powered by a diesel engine. Things such as scrapers, loaders, track hoes, dozers, dump trucks, rollers, and even electric generators are powered with diesel engines.

Q: How much power does the generator from the diesel need to produce in order to bring the train up to running speed?: That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

Q: How do they supply their own electricity? I know recently they have moved to solar energy, but am curious as to what else they do.: They have various diesel generator power houses set up around the islands.

By nature all generators generate their output voltage in cycles as they rotate, or even as they go back and forth for a linear generator. Therefore they generate AC, but the commutator converts this to DC. The commutator is a rotary switch that reverses the connection at the correct part of the rotation so that the current always flows one direction. That is DC, direct current instead of AC, alternating current. Sometimes AC generators may be called an Alternator. A shunt generator simply means it is self excited, that is the field magnet is connected across the generator's output, rather than having a separate DC generator for the field.

Q: I was thinking about buying used car batteries from the junk yard and connecting them with jumper cables then testing the connected batteries with a battery tester to see how many volts it has. I havent tried this yet so I dont know if it will work do you guys have any idea on how to make a generator so I wont have to pay for power: You can re-design you house to run with 12 volts DC power: 1. Build a 12 volts battery bank,100000 AH or more.Connect 100 pieces of battery in parallel. Each battery requires a high current blocking diode at 100 amperes. 2.Change all the light bulbs into 12 volts. 3.You cannot use any electric appliances that run with 115 volts AC power. Like desktop computer,but you can replacing it with laptop computer that running on 12 volts DC. 4.Replace all appliances that able to run with 12 volts DC. They are existed in the market and they were designed for camping purpose. 5.Make a huge solar panel to recharge the battery bank. 6.You can feed the 12 volts home make power source to the AC panel to save some wiring.

Others include straight electric locomotives that are typically powered using alternating current transmission (AC), although in years past these used to be powered using outdated direct current transmission (DC). Of note, some of the new environmentally friendly models use battery power to cut way down on emissions and only use backup generators when their batteries need recharged.

Q: here's the thing.Imagine that I have a generator that uses diesel as the fuel. then consider following two cases.Case 1 - using one 1kW bulb for one hourCase 2 - using ten 100W bulbs for one hourI know both cases consume a same amount of power that is 1kWH.but I THINK the demand (which is measured in kVA or just kW) is higher in the second case. (is it??)so my question is that, does the generator burn a same amount of fuel at both the cases regardless of higher demand in second case?? and I'd much obliged if you can say how??: If that is a 1 kw incandescent bulb, the generator may shut it's self off when you try to turn on the bulb, but keep running if you turn on the 100 watt bulbs one at a time. That is because the lamps draw about ten times as much current the first millisecond. Fuel consumption is the same, with in the tolerance limits of the bulbs, and other minor errors.

Q: 1. are backup generators constantly running, so when the lights go out to the people inside it seems like they have not?2. what do they run off?: Back up generators are kept as stand bye.In hospitals and other important places they take start immediately when voltage drops in the main. They Run with petrol or diesel oil or other fuels/
