Q: A couple years ago the power in our area was out for two whole weeks because of ice and such, we stayed warm thanks to gas heating but now I'm in an all electric mobile home in the same area. All I want to power is the refrigerator, deep freeze, microwave, one laptop and at least one, maybe two little plug in heaters.I need to know what size/type generator to get and if I need a separate kit or anything in order to hook up to my mobile home. I don't want to buy the wrong type or size and find out it doesn't work in the middle of an ice storm again.Thank you for any and all help, it's very much appreciated.
Add the power for each item, total watts for each and then double it for the size of the generator. I suspect at least a 10 kw unit. The heaters will use a lot of power next is the refrigerator and the deep freeze. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!

I looked online and this company makes everything from small gas driven to large diesel driven. You say the code is for water in the fuel and if it's diesel water would ruin the injectors so it very well could not allow it to start for that reason. At a minion you need to tell us a little more. Did it shut its self down for the over heat or did it size and shut down? that is a good point to start with.

I worked as a geologist for a major oil company and you are overstating the danger. The worst thing I saw was a sprained back from a fall. Relax, oil exploration is fun and rewarding, as well as lucrative for the 'ol wallet.

Very little. Less than it takes to run at power while underway. The fuel lines are only so big, and it can't flow fuel any faster than that. There is a myth that machines take a LOT of energy to start up. Some people say it takes as much power to start your PC as it does to run it for 30 minutes. The same is often said of fluorescent lights. That is not true - it is essentially never true. It is used as an excuse to avoid shutting the thing down. Why can't they? Because the pipe or wire supplying the fuel/energy is only so big. If a PC took that much energy to start up, it would trip the circuit breaker. The energy also would have to go somewhere, and energy always goes away as heat. A massive surge of startup energy would be a massive surge of heat, which usually burns or explodes a thing. So no -- devices generally do NOT use massively more energy to start up than they do to stay running. Some times might have a startup surge of double, or perhaps triple - such as a hard drive or compressor spinning up. But nothing more than that, and only for an instant - too fast for most circuit breakers to trip.

You can re-design you house to run with 12 volts DC power: 1. Build a 12 volts battery bank,100000 AH or more.Connect 100 pieces of battery in parallel. Each battery requires a high current blocking diode at 100 amperes. 2.Change all the light bulbs into 12 volts. 3.You cannot use any electric appliances that run with 115 volts AC power. Like desktop computer,but you can replacing it with laptop computer that running on 12 volts DC. 4.Replace all appliances that able to run with 12 volts DC. They are existed in the market and they were designed for camping purpose. 5.Make a huge solar panel to recharge the battery bank. 6.You can feed the 12 volts home make power source to the AC panel to save some wiring.
