You definitely should install a generator. I think power outages have gotten worse and they happen more often. Also the piece of mind you get by having the generator is worth quite a bit. I would make sure to get enough power so that you could run a heat source and if you have well water, enough to power that too. $500 will buy a 5000 watt generator.

Does the Esab welder have high frequency? If so the high freq. is feeding back into the generator and frying the electronics. You may need to have the generators repaired. The only way to prevent damage is to turn the high freq. off, or drive an earth ground as close to the welder as possible and you have to run a wire to your grounding clamp to this ground and the machine ground needs to go to this also. You have to get the high freq. out of the circuit as quick as possible. (I have a Hobart Champion Fabshop that is notorious for this.)

The two moves that Hoghead described are better known to me as the Dutch Drop and the Flying Switch. Letting a car roll like that without a locomotive attached to it is pretty sketchy, and in order for the move to work, you have to bottle the air. That's REALLY sketchy, but it's been done many, many times. Locomotives are totally capable of accelerating like that, but they'll definitely scream while they're doing it. As a general rule, you just don't want to accelerate quickly with a train. The slack needs to come out gently and what not. If the slack is tight, though, I've seen some crews open it right up. A pair of GP39-2's must have hit 20 miles an hour in just a few hundred feet. I was really impressed by that one. I've found, though, that if you don't let the units load at their own pace, you just end up spinning the wheels or screwing something else up. You can also run into problems with the motors' transitions if you throttle up too fast. Not fun!

Q: I want to build an electric generator from an electric motor, how do I do this?I need planes on how to build a generator from an electric motor. I am wanted to use a 16 HP Power Diesel tractor motor. Can any one help? I am useing Diesel power because diesel fuel last longer than gas when in storage. Is this correct?I want a AC Generator.
Very simple. You need an electric motor of the same wattage as you need to generate. You will need to spin the motor a little faster than the rated RPM of the motor. (pick your pulleys carefully) Hook a small load up to the motor, spin it, hit it with a jolt of voltage. (try your 12 volt battery)It should start to generate and you can hook up a bigger load to it. Too simple? Try it.
