Q:I have a 4 piston Diesel engine on my generator, I have a nasty oil sludge continue to build up every time, I have flushed the engine with engine flush liqui-moly probably six times, but after it is clean the sludge builds up again in couple of days, I got sick and tired of going down there and get all messed up with nasty oil.The engine produces while smoke continuously, not much but visible enough. I get oil coming onto the air filter, the place smells nasty because of this. The light bulbs flicker when running on the generator, it heats up fast and shuts off when I put load on it as an AC. Can someone please help me out and let me know what to do?
I forgot to mention that, the coolant level is stable, I have changed it already and all is fine is that area. I have done today a cleaning job, I mixed 3 liters of fresh engine oil with 2 liters of diesel, and poured it into the engine, ran it for 5 minutes and drained it, repeated that 3 times with fresh oil and diesel every time, I got loads of crab coming out till I finally got semi-pure liquid, then poured 5 liters of fresh oil with new oil filter, and then ran the generator and put load on it, no major change apart from no more flickering lights, white smoke still coming out and can not say if it less than before. If this does not hold water, I am going to take it to the shop. That is that.
Q:I have no idea how to possibly even begin interms of comparison. i know for a standard diesel engine i can just look at fuel efficiency and overall engine efficiency, but how would i do this for a diesel electric engine??
That is a good question! We do not want to make things to be too good, we after all live in a capitalistic society. If we wanted to make this very good we would have a 2 stroke diesel that runs on a mixture of 51% ethanol and 49% water with a caster oil lube. Then we could tune this engine to only run at a speed that is matched to the speed of a PM generator. Using this as the basis of the hybrid system. One gallon of ethanol makes almost 2 gallons of fuel. So right off the bat you would have double the fuel economy. Then another double for the hybrid system. Now you add a few PV panels to the roof so that your car will charge while you are in work. You might NEVER need to buy any fuel. But who is going to invest in a machine that does not make lots of money for somebody? After all we can not sell sunshine now can we. John.
Q:Hello, what I'm really trying to understand is how do large generators that power prisons, hospitals and various government buildings work? I have a basic understanding of regular house generators and their working process. What I want to know is how such a generator can acquire power in a case of a complete electric blackout, is there a back up supply line? another power source? Surely to supply a large building such as a prison or a hospital one would need a large reserve of power. So the question is where does that power come from? Or are they completely autonomous? Also are these generators commonly used nowadays and what is the difference between them and the reserve power system if any. I would greatly appreciate any answers that could explain the above. Thanks.
You are asking about backup generators? They have a gasoline or diesel engine driving the generator.
Q:I have been researching EV cars and conversions and am wondering about using a generator instead of batteries. I am not an enviro-nut concerned about making an emission free vehicle, just one that is cheap to drive. It seems to me that using a generator to power the motor, although it would use gas, would be way more efficient than a normal gas engine that is in a car, and would be lighter than batteries. Also, if it is a diesel generator I could run bio-diesel to cut back on emissions. Am I correct in this assumption?
I was working for werner trucking and they were installing APU generators on thier trucks and it uses 1/3 less than the truck does at idle. 1/3 of a half a gallon of fuel an hour. It runs the ac and heat. I hope this helps
Q:For over a year, about once a month I start this Jeep and run it about 10 minutes. Zero problems until yesterday. It has fresh gasoline just added, cranks over fine, has spark (I have a spark tester) but will not 'pop' over. Upon closer inspection I see it has at least 6 Bosch type relays under the hood and know if one sticks something will not turn on. Any idea's where to start troubleshooting?(I am a retired US Navy diesel generator mechanic).
Yeah.
Q:If it is not run continuosly in what intervals should it be stopped and what is the standstill time?
as long as you can monitor oil pressure and water temp and provide emergency shutdowns for both. It can run until specified oil change interval which is probably no more than 500 hours at a time.
Q:Does a current carrying conductor experiences a force onlywhen the current is in the same direction as the magnetic field?
Current carrying conductor will always experience force, weather the magnetic field is from external or self induced magnetic field. The reason I know this is because I have been involved in testing 50,000 watt diesel generator sets by applying a dead short (1000's amps) across the output. And have observed double (00) cables jumping on the laboratory floor (like a garden hose when you slam the valve shut).
Q:Hi. I'm thinking about getting a Kubota Diesel Generator. I have read in many places that the Kubota Diesel engine is the gold standard of Diesel engines. So I'm not worried about that. What i need to know is this, is the generator as a whole dependable? Will over loading it for a few short seconds when the AC compressor kicks in burn it out or shorten its life?Any other insight would be appreciated. Thanks for your answers
Kubota diesel plants are being used more and more in industry, replacing some of the old standbys like Kohler, Perkins and even Caterpillar in lighter applications. I don't think you will regret buying a Kubota.
Q:Elec. bill is too high, so I wanna run 2HP swimming pool pump via generator. It's 240V. How big a generator do I need? Is diesel less to purchase than gas? Is diesel cheaper to run? Can I run the pool say 6 hrs a day on generator designed for emergency back-up?
If you take into consideration the initial cost of a generator and the fuel to feed it, electricity is still the better deal.
