Q: How much carbon does the average diesel-powered (not hybrid or diesel-electric) freight train engine emit per ton-mile?: All diesel locomotives actually are now self-generating electrics. The diesel turns a generator that powers YOOOOJ electric motors geared to the drive wheels. IOW the electric part is the transmission between the engine and wheels. As for carbon output Assume 0.4 # of fuel per horsepower per hour. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!

Q: I know with cars there is a blue book but how does it work for a generator? We have an 80kw Kholer Diesel generator with 1,050 hrs on it and it's 13 years old. It gets regular maintenance and is in great shape. I've been looking online but can't seem to figure out how much it's worth.: $8,000-$15,000 depending on the exact model and much more information. Generators have as many options as cars, and that is why the prices vary.

I've access to all of the machines.which are needed in this project.i know about how the engine works.i don't know how piston rings and piston seals the combustion chamber,how to make them.how much power will my generator will generate.i wan't to make this generator for my PC.: With respect, you're actually asking how to design and build your own engine. There are entire books on the subject, and you need plenty of diagrams as well. That's far beyond the scope of an answer on here. But if all you need is a 12v regulated dc power supply why not just get a model car or boat engine and see if you can hook it up to a car alternator from a scrapped vehicle via a suitable pulley gearing? It certainly won't be quiet though, and you'll need to ensure that the engine is either fan or water cooled and that there's a suitable exhaust outlet. Model diesel engines aren't very large, but there are larger scale copies of the old British Mills engine design made in India, and also various websites which give you details or sell you plans on how to build your own. Usually they have lapped pistons so don't need the complication of piston rings.

Q: i means what's happen in diesel generator while just switch on ?: Depends whether it is a battery start or air pressure start. If it's started with a battery, the starter cranks the engine with an electric starter. If it is air started, a solenoid valve is energized, or a hand valve is opened to allow the air pressure to crank the engine with an air turbine. That's the first occurance. There is a definite start-up sequence, in the event the engines fails to start within a given time frame.

Q: Every time i go to the pawn shop i always end up craping my pants. I crap em so hard that i got to leave to change and come right backnext time i best bring a diaper because the pawn shop always does it to me. Everything is pretty much stolen and new so i get 50% off pawn price because they know me for years.The last time i craped my pants was when i got this really nice 2000$ diesel generator for 400$ and BAM!Didn't even feel it coming, reached in my pocket to count my cash and the next thing i knew was i got a landslide running down my leg filling up my work boot. Q: I have a 4 piston Diesel engine on my generator, I have a nasty oil sludge continue to build up every time, I have flushed the engine with engine flush liqui-moly probably six times, but after it is clean the sludge builds up again in couple of days, I got sick and tired of going down there and get all messed up with nasty oil.The engine produces while smoke continuously, not much but visible enough. I get oil coming onto the air filter, the place smells nasty because of this. The light bulbs flicker when running on the generator, it heats up fast and shuts off when I put load on it as an AC. Can someone please help me out and let me know what to do?: I forgot to mention that, the coolant level is stable, I have changed it already and all is fine is that area. I have done today a cleaning job, I mixed 3 liters of fresh engine oil with 2 liters of diesel, and poured it into the engine, ran it for 5 minutes and drained it, repeated that 3 times with fresh oil and diesel every time, I got loads of crab coming out till I finally got semi-pure liquid, then poured 5 liters of fresh oil with new oil filter, and then ran the generator and put load on it, no major change apart from no more flickering lights, white smoke still coming out and can not say if it less than before. If this does not hold water, I am going to take it to the shop. That is that.

Q: can caterpillar diesel generator generate power for 1 month without any shutdowns? which is generator good GAS or Diesel?: machines are not design to run for month of course yes. Most common I know is diesel generators. But if you have fuel gas much better as gas normally has lower operating pressure and much pure in composition so lesser maintenance in the end. But not seen any caterpillar of gas design.

Q: I will put this generator to power my automated vehicle which have sensors, servo for the steering, motor for the rotation of the rear shaft, laptop for camera vision etc.: A battery powered wheel chair has everything you need. You can buy an old one cheap and fix it up to work as your automated vehicle. Use Lithium Ion batteries for maximum power or one of the new AGM car batteries that provide deep discharge operation.

Q: I want to know if i can get a 40kvh generator (witch is usually ran by 4 cylinder diesel engine) to run with a water wheel and some poulies??: (Assuming kvh is a misprint for kVA) If you can (1) get a big enough water wheel (40kVA 40 000 Newton-metres per second: you would need about 4000 kg of water per second falling through a height of 1 metre to run it at full capacity, increasing the fall or reducing the maximum load will reduce the required flow rate) and (2) ensure that you can get the generator to spin at 3000 rpm (to get 50 cycles a second) then yes.

Q: I want to build a little shack in the bush where i can hang out with friends. Nothing special no plumbing maybe diesel generator very small and possibly a wood stove. What supplies should i use for walls, floor, ceiling and roof. will be built on private land hidden in back roads. This would just be a place to hang out on weekends and not really a place to live. What else should be included and what is important stuff to know: WOW! Where do I begin? I've been a Carpenter for a bit now. Are you going to build it on Sono-Tubes? You need to know,, Plumb, and Level, and Square. Which roof will it have? 5/12, 8/12, or 12/12 pitch? What space is available? Plywood, 2 by 4's 2by 6's, 2 by 10's, 2 by 12's? All of those apply to building a comfortable abode. Will you insulate it? You will also need roofing shingles. That's where the square comes into factor. 10 by 10, is 1 square. Do you want to panel the walls? Sheetrock? Leave them bare? Their is a lot to consider. You just don't slap something up.
