The velocity of the exhaust gas is highly dependent on the size of the exhaust pipe. A smaller exhaust pipe, a much higher velocity --- a larger exhaust pipe, a much slower exhaust gas velocity. A 2 exhaust pipe would have about 2.25 times the velocity of a 3 pipe. The exhaust velocity is highly dependent as well on the RPM of the generator. Double the RPM, and there is much higher pressure, and much higher exhaust gas velocity. Q: I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator.At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. We bought a 6500 KVA Coleman which at an 80% duty cycle should give 5200 continuous watts of power. This would service a refrigerator, an energy efficient small freezer, lights, maybe a TV. Enough to get you through 72 hours of whatever. We only had to fire it up one time, when there was a big outage due to a big power pole being out. (We live out in the country, so we have a Franklin stove with pot hooks, grill, etc., so we can make coffee, cook, etc.) We also keep 75 individual gallons of pure water, enough supplies to handle two weeks, and a continous spring to handle bathrooms. No such thing as a diesel that runs forever All engines need fluids checked. In generators, there is prime power and standby power. Your warranty will be different for each type. The prime units can run for very long times, but are more expensive and have oil adding systems, etc to automoatically maintain levels and things like that. The diesel engine can be shhutdown and restartted like a gas engine. The turbo and starter motor are the real reasons for not doing short starts and stops. Also, how much load/environment you put on the generator makes a difference in how long it can run too. They can run for a long time as long as they are checked and maintained.

Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??: If you are seeing a voltage with no load, there is at least some residual magnetism in the field. Flashing the field probably wouldn't make any difference. I'd look for an open field winding or bad regulator if your machine uses brushes. If your machine is brushless, check for an open exciter winding, bad regulator, shorted or open diodes in the rotating field or open windings in the rotating field.
