Q: I want to ask that how much fuel does a diesel generator consume in one hour?How can I calculate the fuel consumption?
I'll tell ya how to operate one of those machines, you put some diesel in the tank till it started to overflow, you turn it on full blast so it is chugging and heaving away. when it starts sputterin and chokin put in some more diesel.
Q: I get conflicting opinions from mechanics about extended shut-down.I am parked for 3 months and driving is not an option. Should I re-start my diesel engine weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or just wait the 3 months and re-start then? If so, should I just restart as normal?I do know when I re-start, I must wait until normal temperture is reached prior to shut down, this could take 20 minutes or longer with the rear mounted engine. The radiator covered from the outside will not warm-up as fast as a front mounted engine. Covering this radiator from the inside is not an option due to a shroud covering the fan.
if you are going to leave it sitting they can sit for more than a year and it will still run fine but the only question is the battery they can not stay fully charged so if not using then disconnect the positive side to the battery and when you want to use it just reconnect it this is the way i do to preserve the battery and for added protection add stabil (fuel stabilizer) to diesel if it is going to sit through the winter Edit : a battery charger is a good idea My parent's RV has a solar panel which keeps the battery fully charged but does not use the RV much 1 to 2 times a year had a stabil in it so far no problems but the generator is problematic cause it runs on gas so I had to start it every month to make sure there is no problems with it(run it for 1/2 hour) gas deteriorates faster than diesel even if it has stabil

If you are talking about the truck (traction) motors on a locomotive, then whole power system! diesel engine, generator, exciter generator, truck motors, can range anywhere from seven hundred horsepower for a switch engine up to several thousand horsepower for a line haul locomotive. The traction motors get their power from the generator which is connected to the diesel engine. There is no direct mechanical connection from the diesel engine to the wheels. All the diesel engine does is turn the generator. The power from the generator is what running the traction motors which in turn drives the wheels of the locomotive. That is where the term diesel over electric comes from. In short the diesel engine drives the generator. The power from the generator drives the traction motors. The traction motors drive the wheels. The wheels drive the locomotive. The amount of power the generator puts out is controlled by two things. How fast it is turning (number of RPM and how much excitation voltage it's fields are being excited with by the exciter generator. Both the RPM's and the excitation voltage is controlled by the engineer. The advantage of using diesel over electric is they can tandem several locomotives together to pull long trains and be able to control them all from the lead engine. (Locomotive) As far as size Look at the trucks on the locomotive. The area between the wheels is pretty muchly taken up by the traction motors. Here is another fact. The generator is a DC generator and the traction motors are DC motors. Most of the time they are series wound DC motors for better starting torque since they are always coupled to a load. Here is another fact from the been there done that file! Traction motors are nasty and dirty to work on like when you have to change brushes and seat the new brushes and horne the commutator
Q: Hi GuysOkay i have been given the task of fitting a 240v generator to an RV in to one of it's closet spaces.It needs to power one 240v socket, charge the RV battery (standard battery on trickle charge) and power the shower which doesn't have a boiler as such it heats the water on a 'as and when' basis. Low wattage lighting also two 40W lightsThere is plenty of space. so I thought how about try and fit a generator than runs on renewable energy.I just need to know what direction I should be looking in. Electric heating of your hot water is very inefficient since you have so much heat rejected in the exhaust for every KWHr you make. Your best bet would be to use the exhaust heat and/or jacket cooling water from a biofueled generator to heat the hot water tank. You get very high efficiencies from that combination. I have seen such devices talked about (see the link below) for years, but have recently seen one that is actively under development. It may be a bit oversized for your RV, however, since it is for a house. You may be able to just add a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use a small, thermostatically controlled pump to circulate the hot water from the tank through the tubes. Biofuels are not as available as gasoline, but if you research where you are going, you may find they are more prevalent than you think. Also, the generator will be able to run on fossil fuels as well, giving you a back up in case you can't find biofuel. Hydrogen is interesting, but I can't think a commercially available generator that runs on it. And you would still have the efficiency issue unless you recovered the exhaust heat like I have said for the biofuel. I can't think that solar would work well, you have such a limited amount of collection surface on the roof, and lugging around batteries and/or hot water is also inefficient. I have been on trips where it was cold and cloudy for a week, solar would not do well under those circumstances.

Since they have been caught, now they are doing real world tests. Now, let us look at what Europe is doing with automobiles. CLEAN DIESEL. These clean diesels consume far less fuel than gasoline motors of the same size. They are getting quieter, no longer smoke, and are as fast as gasoline cars in some cases. Mrs. Speaker, I challenge you to drive one of these cars and you will be surprised. However, I think the public should decide on whether Global Warming is true or not. I do not want you and a hand full of others control our lives when we vote you in there to work for us.
I agree. This has just recently become an option as ULSD was just mandated in Nov 2006, and newer diesels manufactured recently must have stricter emissions standards and must have particulate traps on the exhaust. High NOx levels are still of some concern because of the excess heat and pressures created by the high compression in diesel engines. Also it's easier to use biofuels. You don't need a flex anything! I have 4 diesels, and I use biodiesel in all of them for 3 reasons: 1 - Reduces dependence on foreign oil 2 - Makes a diesel run better due to superior lubrication 3 - Whether global warming is true or not, I'm at least doing my part with out even doing anything different. Good call pro-diesel. Hopefully others will see the light.
Q: i have an amida lt5000 light tower/generator. its 22 hp, 120/240, 8.5 kw., 2 cylinder diesel motor, its pull behind type, its got 6 lights on the tower and stands up to like 40 feet. its got surface rust in some spots, its not the best looking but how much could i get 4 it? i cant find prices on OKorder or anything
It would depend on who needs it. Check with any Rental places in your area that may have one. They may also be interested in buying it.

For the generator to start, the generator must be disconnected from the bus, there must be sufficient start air pressure, and the fuel tank must indicate there is oil. When these conditions are met, then the diesel may be started. Presume there are senors to determine these values.
This is just an and gate function. When the outputs of all the sensors are true and a start command is present, the output of the gate will go high to allow the engine to start.

One other consideration for your generator is the natural gas has less power in the range of 25% If you need 7.5 KW and it is natural gas then the generator needs to be a 10KW unit. Diesel is quite reliable but storage of fuel is a concern, for petrol also. I suggest you contact a local electrical contractor who specializes in home generator installations. 25 KW is about the smallest for your needs. 40 is probably a better choice. All in all they are not cheap.
