- Probably - with serious optimization - about the same as from gasoline/electric hybrids, maybe a little worse. Most people are as surprised as I was to find out the maximum theoretical efficiency of a diesel engine is about 50% while the maximum theoretical efficiency of a gasoline (otto cycle) engine is about 65%. It has to do with the diesel adding heat at constant pressure while the otto cycle engine adds heat at constant volume. Anyway, gasoline engines typically fall behind because the theoretical maxima are at infinite compression ratio with perfectly insulated cylinder heads, cylinders, and pistons. Diesel engines are capable of much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines, and the method of throttling gasoline engines has the effect of reducing the compression ratio even more. That has given diesel engines a reputation for efficiency and they are more efficient than turbine engines (about 40% max) and rockets (about 12% max). However, hybridization has allowed gasoline engines to reach efficiencies that are not very practical for diesels. The current generation Prius spends a lot of engine operation at 38% efficiency - the 2016+ is supposed to reach 40%. Diesels can't compete; although that represents only 61% of the theoretical max for gas engines it is 80% of the theoretical max for diesels, and that last bit of efficiency is the very devil to achieve. It would require entirely new materials and other major improvements. As the source says, Conventional gasoline engines have long run about 25 percent, diesels at 30 to 35 percent.

- With electric heat, you're into a large generator. 'Automatic on' means a transfer switch generator control panel. If you're thinking about 'survival mode' diesel is your best fuel option. (More widely available, less tech. support for refueling, and stores well.) You might consider an engine heat capture system for efficiency in winter conditions. You probably need about 20-25KVA to handle full load with heating. (That's only a 'guestimate, DO do the math before you select a unit.) This won't be cheap.
- Q:I want to power a water heater, a blower fan, and a small water pump continuously with a diesel generator run on Biodiesel. Is it possible to set up a system of some deep cycle batteries that will carry the load for say 1/2 hour or 1 hour and have the generator kick on automatically when the voltage drops to charge the batteriesthis way the generator will not be run continuously. - Yes, this is quite possible. What you need to do is to determine the maximum current draw, and size the equipment accordingly. One important point to remember is that batteries do not like to be re-charged rapidly. Therefore, the drain on the batteries in say 1/2 hour, may take several hours to recharge. This scheme works very well with solar energy, but what you may very well end up with huge losses in efficiency. I can tell you first hand, that if you are able to buy power from the electric company, it will be the cheapest, cleanest alternative. And, no, I do not work for the government, or the power company but I do have an old wind turbine and an empty bank book.

- Hi It is the same as a gas engine to maintain. Except for the fuel has to be water free. There will be a bowl some where to empty the water. Changing the oil etc. depends on how much you use it.

- Water is H2O they use and used a process where they take the water and filter out the hydrogen leaving them with oxygen and they just pump out the hydrogen into the ocean

- I have never heard. But it can't be very much. There's a primer button back in the long hood area. Priming is necessary because the fuel runs back down into the fuel tank when not running. After priming for about 6 to 10 seconds, a start switch is flipped that turns the generator into a magnetic starter motor. The engine only turns over just a couple times (usually) before it fires and is pleasantly idling on its own. Starting can't require very much fuel. On the newer GEs and EMDs with auto shut down, these starting functions are all automatic electronically of course.

- Q:I have a 4 piston Diesel engine on my generator, I have a nasty oil sludge continue to build up every time, I have flushed the engine with engine flush liqui-moly probably six times, but after it is clean the sludge builds up again in couple of days, I got sick and tired of going down there and get all messed up with nasty oil.The engine produces while smoke continuously, not much but visible enough. I get oil coming onto the air filter, the place smells nasty because of this. The light bulbs flicker when running on the generator, it heats up fast and shuts off when I put load on it as an AC. Can someone please help me out and let me know what to do?
- I forgot to mention that, the coolant level is stable, I have changed it already and all is fine is that area. I have done today a cleaning job, I mixed 3 liters of fresh engine oil with 2 liters of diesel, and poured it into the engine, ran it for 5 minutes and drained it, repeated that 3 times with fresh oil and diesel every time, I got loads of crab coming out till I finally got semi-pure liquid, then poured 5 liters of fresh oil with new oil filter, and then ran the generator and put load on it, no major change apart from no more flickering lights, white smoke still coming out and can not say if it less than before. If this does not hold water, I am going to take it to the shop. That is that.

- It depends on the model you buy and typically the more expensive models will equip themselves with a better muffler. (Basically each model will describe their decibel rating). I find most generators will provide about as much noise as a lawn mower. So, it is great to run during the day, but you might consider not running them during the night. I also think a diesel motor is just fine to run as a generator- I find the diesel rigs will run at lower RPMS, and last longer. If you are pluging this thing into your home, dont forget to have a professionally installed transfer switch to avoid electricuting the lineman, otherwise you will need to run extension cords to what you want powered.
