Q:Hi. I'm thinking about getting a 15KVA Cummins generator.I want to know how many hours can I run a Diesel Generator before I have to give it a rest? How many hours do I need to rest it before I can get it started again. I live in a hot and dusty area.I have heard that Diesel engines are happier if they are just kept running and they hate being turned off and on, is that true?Any help or insight would be appreciated.Greetings from Iran
you need to read the documentation. No such thing as a diesel that runs forever All engines need fluids checked. In generators, there is prime power and standby power. Your warranty will be different for each type. The prime units can run for very long times, but are more expensive and have oil adding systems, etc to automoatically maintain levels and things like that. The diesel engine can be shhutdown and restartted like a gas engine. The turbo and starter motor are the real reasons for not doing short starts and stops. Also, how much load/environment you put on the generator makes a difference in how long it can run too. They can run for a long time as long as they are checked and maintained.
Q:I'm estimating 81 mpg at best, and 47 mpg at worst.
A friend is getting well over 100MPG. But his journey is just about optimum for the car. Plugs in at both ends.
Q:I need these values for 400 KVa and 150 KVa plants in order to run an air pollution computer simulation. Thanks!. Volumetric flow is not useful for me,because i don't have any information about flow areas or diameters.
This is a difficult question to answer accurately. The velocity of the exhaust gas is highly dependent on the size of the exhaust pipe. A smaller exhaust pipe, a much higher velocity --- a larger exhaust pipe, a much slower exhaust gas velocity. A 2 exhaust pipe would have about 2.25 times the velocity of a 3 pipe. The exhaust velocity is highly dependent as well on the RPM of the generator. Double the RPM, and there is much higher pressure, and much higher exhaust gas velocity. An attached article mentions that the exhaust velocity in some unspecified gasoline powered car --- and at some unspecified RPM --- is about 240 to 260 feet per second. autolounge /tech/exhaust.html
Q:I was wondering if you guys know where to find an electrical generator that does not come with an engine. For example, I have found diesal generators that use diesal fuel to create current. I need something that can create current, but doesn't come with any mechanical input.I basically need an alternator that can produce power on the 30 kilowatt level.
There was much more success searching with terms like belt driven generator, generator head, or two bearing generator, than with just generator. A practical problem: An AC generator's output frequency is dependent on the shaft speed, so you'll need a governor to keep the speed constant, even as the applied load changes. The packaged engine-generator sets include a governor set-up, does the engine you have include a governor? Many of these generator heads run at 3600rpm, is your diesel going to be happy running for long periods of time at that speed? You could change the shaft speed with a pulley ratio if you use belts, but in any event, the shaft speed must be kept constant at the manufacturers specification to keep the output line frequency and voltage at the desired spec. You will also need a Generator Transfer Switch to transfer household loads from the utility to the generator, if you decide to go that far. In the third reference provided below, notice that some of the pictures show only a lay-out. Some sort of very sturdy mounting plate would be needed for those configurations. If the engine was started with the generator head just laying there, parts would be flying all over the place in short order. Obviously shaft and belt alignments would be critical.
Q:I noticed how all the commuter trains here in Massachusetts use diesel engines. Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?
Bombardier has come up with some new technology that will not require the ugly overhead power lines. Right now its being geared for trams and light rail. A box is buried underneath the track, and when the train passes over there is a surge of energy that gets passed to the train battery. A person can walk over the track and box, but they will not be affected. Right now the technology is not advanced enough for heavier trains. Massachusetts will probably go to a new dual mode locomotive by Bombardier thats being built right now in Kassel Germany. It has a pantograph on top for the power lines. When it comes to a line without power it uses diesel and battery. Its really a revolutionary locomotive that will be ready in 2011. New Jersey Transit has 28 on order with an option to buy almost 90 locomotives if it works out.
Q:I want to buy a portable generator for power-outages and need some advice on which to buy. I want to run: at least one refrigerator possibly a stand-alone freezerbasic lightinga few outlets a sum-pump. I also need to provide power to my heat in the winter Our heat is natural gas but it needs to be lit with the pilot light and I guess the thermostats need power. Preferrably diesel so we can store fuel safer. How many volts and watts do I need, what price range should I look for, and how many gallons of fuel would I need to be prepared for a good 2 days without power? Thanks- best answer gets the 10!
Your idea of a diesel is good. Look on the back of both all appliances and find the plate that tells how many watts and amps they use and copy them down. Make a list of what will be plugged into the outlets and if possible get the amps and wattage of those and add it to your list, same with sump pump. Now take that list to a dealer and show it to them and they will figure out what size generator you will need. Do not guess what size generator you will need, most underestimate The size and often by a large amount. Let an expert that is in the business do the figuring. Most answers on here go by widely varying assumptions and uneducated guesses, depending on any of them could result in your system watts being way off. You might be paying for a system several times too large or small if you rely on these answers. Either way it could get very expensive and wasteful.
Q:How do they supply their own electricity? I know recently they have moved to solar energy, but am curious as to what else they do.
They have various diesel generator power houses set up around the islands.
Q:Hi. I need to buy a diesel generator to run my house on. We have to run at least 3 ACs at a time. The ACs consume roughly 1500W with a surge power of 4500W.Here's my question. If I get a 12KW rated generator, does that mean that each phase can only handle 4000 KW, therefore not even enough to start an AC? i was given this formula by a sales man KVASQRT3 X V X iCan you shed some light on this problem?Greetings from Iran
Is the house wired 3 phase or split phase or single phase? Very few houses are wired for 3 phase power. Iran uses 230/240 VAC 50Hz So from that, you need a single phase 240 VAC 50 Hz generator. A 12 kW generator at 240 volts would supply 50 amps. I'd run that to a breaker panel (if you don't already have one) and then run 10 amp lines with a 10 amp breaker to each AC. That leaves you with quite a few amps to run other appliances. You got off on a 3 phase tangent for some reason you aren't telling, but I don't think that is the way you want to go. hope that helps. .
Q:Having lots of diesel fuel to make electricity (200-800KW)is it better to use a diesel generator or a steam turbine?(Remember : the only way to produce steam is burning diesel)Does anybody know how many KWh can make per 1000gal?
Power okorder
Q:ANDwhat kind is it? How many times have you had to use it? How many things could you run on it? How much did you spend? Would you buy one with more power next time, or is the one you have sufficient? What types of problems have you had with running it. Do your neighbors always ask to hook up to it?
If you have access to natural gas the best would be a unit that uses it as fuel. Advantages include - reliability, no refueling, automatic periodic testing, low noise, compact size, built-in weatherized cabinet. Disadvantage is cost. One must really think long and hard about installing a generator vs its cost/hassle. How many outages have you had in the last few years? how long have they lasted? how much inconvenience did you/would you experience? do you live in a winter area where you require heat? Do you have friends/family on the other side of town where you could seek refuge for a few days? I have lived in many areas of the world (including Florida)and never have felt the need for a generator. A refrigerator will hold food for about 12 hours - its freezer will hold food for days if unopened. If you do opt for a generator, I would size it to handle everything EXCEPT the air conditioner.
