Q: Are they cranked by a self starter? Is there such an immensely powerful self starter that runs off batteries and can start such a big engine?Or are they started by some gasoline powered motor?
A diesel engine is started (like an automobile) by turning over the crankshaft until the cylinders fire or begin combustion. The starting can be done electrically or pneumatically. Pneumatic starting was used for some engines. Compressed air was pumped into the cylinders of the engine until it gained sufficient speed to allow ignition, then fuel was applied to fire the engine. The compressed air was supplied by a smallauxiliary engine or by high pressure air cylinders carried by the locomotive. Electric starting is now standard. It works the same way as for an automobile, with batteries providing the power to turn a starter motor which turns over the main engine. In older locomotives fitted with DC generators instead of AC alternators, the generator was used as a starter motor by applying battery power to it.
Q: i wan't to make a small diesel generator. I've access to all of the machines.which are needed in this project.i know about how the engine works.i don't know how piston rings and piston seals the combustion chamber,how to make them.how much power will my generator will generate.i wan't to make this generator for my PC.
With respect, you're actually asking how to design and build your own engine. There are entire books on the subject, and you need plenty of diagrams as well. That's far beyond the scope of an answer on here. But if all you need is a 12v regulated dc power supply why not just get a model car or boat engine and see if you can hook it up to a car alternator from a scrapped vehicle via a suitable pulley gearing? It certainly won't be quiet though, and you'll need to ensure that the engine is either fan or water cooled and that there's a suitable exhaust outlet. Model diesel engines aren't very large, but there are larger scale copies of the old British Mills engine design made in India, and also various websites which give you details or sell you plans on how to build your own. Usually they have lapped pistons so don't need the complication of piston rings.

many years ago, when Bank of America needed such, the choice was between diesel or jet turbine. the money was about the same. the needed load was better met by diesel at that time. diesel and turbine fuel storage does not run the risk of leaking. in addition, the generators are used several times a year, during periods of high demand, as requested by PGE, for which the bank gets a reduced rate on it's electricity all year round. after the Loma Prieta quake, the bank came within 6 hours of running out of fuel for the generators.

Q: Does any one know the best way to go about have an entire house run off of a generator? Mostly likely over periods of no great than two weeks. But it needs to supply a Washer/Dryer, Central A/C, Water Heater, and all of the basics of a smaller house. I did the math and the math says the max I will need is apprx 13,500W. I've done a lot of research on portable, residential, and even green energy, but I am having trouble finding the best way to go about powering a house continually. I need something relatively quiet, or something I can run a ways from the house.And lastly one more curve ball, this is for west TX, so there's not too much rain, especially these days. But it is a desert atmosphere, so I need a way to keep it out of the elements. Any suggestions? Well ventilated shed maybe? Thanks!
Look at getting a 30KW, you want at least a 50% margin so there will be no overload threshhold to worry about. You never want to have a generator running close to capacity. Depending on your budget you may want to think about hydrogen fuel cells that are supplied by the generator and/or solar panels. Fuel cells will make for a vastly smaller carbon footprint and extend the reliability factor of your generator when used in conjunction with the solar panels. Natural gas is the best. If you don't have that propane is your other option. I don't believe there are any that will run on vegetable oil or biofuels yet, if there are they'll be expensive and you really don't want something that will require a specialist when it breaks down in west TX. Most whole-house standby generators have attenuated cabinets meaning they are insulated from the elemets and for noise management. Not to worry. You will want to educate yourself in basic maintenance and keep an ample stock of air filters for the engine, a dusty environment will play havoc with your generator. If you want to live off of the grid there are other ways to do it, if you are homesteading a plat with more than 5 acres you can get a turbine (windmill) as well. It will be cheaper in the long run to just have electrical service, but if logistics (no grid to tie into) prohibit this think about the options I mentioned. Good luck.
Q: I intend to buy Diesel Generator sets in USA but the problem is that the Generator sets available in USA are 50/60Hz /1800rpm, pf 1.0 , 277/480V whereas in my country the Frequency is 50Hz , Voltage is 220/380V and power factor is 0.8. What shall I do to convert the US spec's to what is my requirement.
You can adjust the frequency to 50HZ by running the generator at a speed lower than 1800rpm., that is 1500 rpm. At this speed check the terminal voltage. The voltage can be adjusted to 380 volts using the potentiometer adjustment on the generator panel. The 220 volts can be obtained by using a parallel connection assuming that the generator is wye connected. Actually, the voltage of 380 volts to neutral is 219.39 volts, which is approximately 220 volts. Hence, you may not have to reconnect the generator terminals. The difference in P.F. will not matter much.
Q: Can someone please tell me what is the piston ring cap is for the 186FA Diesel Engine 10hp, fitted into the powermate PM6100DS / 6KW Generator.
Just about all the rings you purchase new today come pre-gapped to the correct tolerance, just like spark plugs. Way in the past, of course back then it was necessary to check the gap. With such a small engine 1/16 is plenty.
Q: I would like to idle my 1981 mercedes benz 300sd for about 4 to 8 hours a day. will i hurt my car somehow if i do this?i am buring diesel to generate powers to charge my battery bank, so i have power for my power tools, it's hard to explain
hi it makes no damage at all if ur car is idle for even more than 5 hours and 2ndly u doing just for charging itsbetter u make a 1 mile round its sufficient for it to charge
Q: Design the logic circuit for starting an emergency diesel generator. For the generator to start, the generator must be disconnected from the bus, there must be sufficient start air pressure, and the fuel tank must indicate there is oil. When these conditions are met, then the diesel may be started. Presume there are senors to determine these values.
This is just an and gate function. When the outputs of all the sensors are true and a start command is present, the output of the gate will go high to allow the engine to start.
Q: here in the town i live in we recently had an avalanche take out power transmission lines from our hydro dam in the time it takes them to repair those 90% of our power is coming from diesel generators(you should have cringed there) causing the price per kWh to go up 500% for what might be the next 3 months.currently i make enough that i can live with a bill 5 times higher than im used to, but a couple of years ago that would have got me kicked out of my apartment because there was no way in hell i could find an extra 300 bucks a month with a week or two notice.its been a big deal here, but we are notorious complainers, so im wondering if that situation would cause you to write letters to editors and complain to everyone who will listen all day long?
My Electric bill in high season is around $350/Month If it was 500% more it would be $1750/Month If it was me I would tell them what to do with their power and use candles, or move in with someone else.
