Q: can DG's be used as a backup for single phase and three phase ac?
Of course diesel-fueled engine generators can be used a backup, i.e. standby or emergency power. They can also be used as prime power (on all the time). If you need to supply a single phase load, either use a single phase generator (only available for small loads), or use a larger three-phase generator and make sure it has a Y-grounded connection. Even better, get an electrician or electrical engineer to choose the right device for your system.
Q: A) what are the pros cons of each system?B)Also what are the operational loss in each case?
Hydroelectric is a good source of power and is used around the country where there is a good source of water. Drawback is initial cost. Today Hoover Dam would probably cost a millions to build. Environmentally they are clean. Diesel Electric is used commonly in areas where there is a lack of water or funding to build hydro. The cost of Diesel is cheep er on the front end than hydro but is expensive to operate and keep up. Since oil will continue to go up and is environmentally damaging it is not a great choice. Steam generators are still in use. They are more expensive to build than Diesel. Coal is very dirty and new coal fired generators are not being produced. Wind Mill generation is a very old method of producing electricity and has a mediums cost to construct it is clean and has fairly inexpensive upkeep. It is estimated that one wind mill can provide the current needs of 40 homes. The Tennessee Valley Authority is now producing power from wind mills. There are also several companies in the West that have wind power. There of course is also atomic power. There is major construction costs and upkeep because of the danger from atomic materials. There is also a cost of getting rid of the used material used as it continues to be dangerous.
Q: a falling waterb burning coalc sunlightd gasoline or diesel fuel
most likely d. gasoline or diesel fuel
Q: I have never had any interest in cars until recently when diesel engines have started to feel like important and valuable power sources moving forward.
They've always been popular in Europe as they have ridiculous fuel taxation. And diesels have traditionally gotten better fuel economy. But these days with direct injected turbo gas engines becoming more prevalent the diesel's fuel economy edge is diminishing. Case in point, the BMW 335i and the BMW 335d. The gas engine gets almost the same mileage as the diesel as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a same deal with the MB 350 as you can see here fueleconomy /feg/Find.do?a Diesels are still quite important for cargo transportation, industrial use, and agriculture, as they have always been. But no offense, but if you're just now finding out about diesel cars, then you've missed the boat by a few decades, diesel cars have been around for a long time.
Q: How do they supply their own electricity? I know recently they have moved to solar energy, but am curious as to what else they do.
They have various diesel generator power houses set up around the islands.
Q: I know that there is a possibility of explosion, but other than that what makes it such a dangerous job? how else to people get hurt in this line of work? I've always wanted to know this, but I never had anyone to ask!
I worked as a geologist for a major oil company and you are overstating the danger. The worst thing I saw was a sprained back from a fall. Relax, oil exploration is fun and rewarding, as well as lucrative for the 'ol wallet.
Q: I have a 3 bedroom / 1 bath home. It is just 2 of us in the house. Also, I've heard that there is way to plug your generator into any wall outlet and it will charge your whole house. Any truth to this?
Plugging a generator into an ordinary wall outlet limits you 15-20 amps of single phase power, or less than 2000-2500w. And it would only energize one leg, or about half the circuits in your house. You'd also want to throw your main breakers to prevent you from backfeeding the neighborhood and/or electrocuting a lineman. Overall, it's not a safe or efficient way to connect a generator. You want a generator plugin that will safely allow more power to fed into your house along with a transfer switch that will properly isolate your house from the grid whenever you want to connect a generator. As for sizing, you need to figure out what you really need vs. what you have, and for how long. For most storm-related outages, you can probably get by with a relatively small amount of power (refrigerator, a few lights, etc) for the few hours or at most 1-2 days that power will likely be out. If you want to cover longer outages or you have higher level of necessities, then you'll need a larger generator. Also, you need to worry about a fuel supply especially if you're planning for a long outage. Fuel transportation and storage can both be problematic, although the problems vary by fuel type (gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane).
Q: i started work in a company and i have to maintain a fuel record of diesel generators.i need to know about this term, kindly answer me in good and easy manner and get 10 points.
As opposed to mileage on a vehicle, the hours meter keeps record of the hours of operation, for servicing, etc.
Q: How many watts would it take to run a small cabin with just basic lights, mini fridge, stove, maybe a small tv? I was thinking a 6000 watt diesel generator.would running it every day ruin it?
That should probably be a big enough generator to run what ur describingThe only problem you could have is with the stove. You may have to run it by itself, depending on its size some stoves can pull alot of amps. As far as running it everyday, a diesel engine is made to run pretty much non stop, that is the advantage of a diesel over a gas engineHope this helps, any other questions feel free to email or message meDoug
Q: if the answer is a regular car, how can hybrids possibly be more efficient than a regular car, since some of the power from the gas engine goes to the generator for the electric motor.
It is about inertia and storage. Hybrid is a new technology and it is more efficient, but they lack performance something the American car market still craves. Did you know that all Diesel locomotives in the US are hybrid and have been for decades? The diesel engine charges batteries and electric motors provide the actual drive.
