- Q: Hi. I ride a CG 125 and am thinking about taking my module 1 test soon. Like most riders I don‘t use my back brake as I feel I don‘t need it. I have been riding for a number of months in all weathers and found that engine braking and good use of the front brake have been enough to stop me in controlled and emergency situations. Will I be failed for not using my back break even if I stop correctly? Many thanks.
- Martyn Like most riders I don't use my back brake as I feel I don't need it. Really! Most riders do not use their back brake? Well as an experience Police Motorcyclist and now a Motorcycle Instructor (CBT to Advanced) I have to tell you that you are wrong. You have two brakes ( not breaks) on a motorcycle and obviously the front brake takes on most of the braking effort as the weight of the bike is transferred forward under braking. But why would anyone deprive themselves of the additional braking the rear can offer especially in an emergency. In slow speed situations, as undertaken on the Module 1, the front brake is just to powerful and as it makes the front end dip can be dangerous especially if applied in mid turn. With regard to the emergency stop on module 1 a quote from the DSA's Operating Procedures As soon as the front wheel has reached the speed measuring device the examiner should give the signal to stop which should be given with the right arm. The examiner should position themselves in a safe position, near the controlled stopping box, where they can observe correct use of both brakes. A greater stopping distance should be allowed in wet conditions. Let me repeat the relevant part correct use of both brakes. So in answer to your question Will I be failed for not using my back break even if I stop correctly? Yes - because you are not stopping 'correctly'. I would suggest you get some lessons before undertaking the tests.
- Q: ok i was coming home on my motorcycle 1982 yamaha maxim 400 and the front brake locked on the rotor, like the little push cylinder in the caliper pushed down on its own and started slowing me way down and i stopped on the road and it was smoking. so i poured oil all over it and pryed it apart as best as i could to make it home. then i removed the caliper and from the fork and took the bleeder out to release the piston part and now it has like no pressure. the screw on the master cylinder is stripped so i cant get the cover off, but if i can get it off would that fix the problem if i added some brake fluid? or does this sound like a different problem in the caliper itself?
- Everybody knows that IPL is a center of match fixing and corruption. So there should not be any shock by latest spot fixing scandal and Sreesanth or two other cricketers are not isolated case. What will you say about a big no ball by RP Singh or three catches dropped by Pollord in a row. Why, even in yesterday's match between Rajasthan and Hyderabad, players of Rajasthan did not go for run out appeal in a clear run out. IPL is all about vulgar money. We audience have our daily fix of cricket-entertainment. Not only there is spot fixing but also matches are scripted and it is pre decided which teams are going to play off round and which team is going to win the trophy.
- Q: What im asking is do you have to balance out the gas you are giving it with the clutch? or can you just let go of the clutch right away then just gas, and when you stop do you have to clutch again then brake or just brake? if it is exactly liek a manual car then i know how to ride, but im not sure if it is
- Yes shifting is just like a car except you shift with your toe an clutch is done by hand. But your statement knowing how th ride is way out in space someplace Riding a bike is a lot different than driving I haven rode bikes for over 30 years with out a scratch. Using your brain an not thinking you can ride is a good start
- Q: I am looking to buy my first motorcycle. I will not be able to ride this winter due to Vermont not being bike friendly with its snowy and cold winters though. I am looking at a used CBR600 RR for my first. What do you guys think about that as a first bike? Is it too powerful? Or can anyone suggest something that might be more appropriate for me?I lack true riding experience, but I still consider myself to be able to handle more then other rookies might be able to due to the natural motor talent I seem to have. What does everyone think? Thanks
- Doesn't matter what we think;. it matters what the state of Vermont thinks. If you are not of a certain age in most states, there are displacement restrictions as well as day/night and passenger restrictions. If you can post this question you can tap into the state website to get the skinny on motorcycle laws, licensing requirements and helmet laws. On a common sense level,. being that as you have zero experience (your words) and the nature of most roads in Vermont (yes I've been there), a 600 sportbike is way too much bike for a first bike. Its OK to be enthusiastic, but you must temper that enthusiasm with discipline.
- Q: Az summer and drum brakes for an old cb motorcycle? Id rather get opinions than go out and find out(well, if its bad). i just know they have issues cooling down.
- Adam gave some very good advice. As far as it being hot in AZ, yes, it's very hot for us humans and to us, there's a big difference between a nice 85 degree day and a blistering 115 degree day. However, that's only 30 degrees difference and for your brakes, that's nothing. They can go from 100F setting in the shade parked to 400F after hard stops. An extra 30 degrees is actually rather insignificant. Swapping out the front brake for a disc is certainly a good idea, but depending upon how old your bike is, I'd be real wary of swapping for a disc set up of the same era (early-mid 1970's). Those old single disc with the hinged caliper hanging in front of the fork leg left a lot to be desired and I'm speaking from experience. When dry, they squealed when you stopped and when wet, they groaned and shook but didn't stop you at all. Drilling them full of holes helped and made them look cooler, but they were still lousy and by todays standards, very lousy.
- Q: Chinese Motorcycle?
- Yes, but only if it's available for the year, make and model. Otherwise, serious and expensive modifications would be required.
- Q: I brought the bike a couple of months ago, and now realized that the fluid was BLACK. so i got new brake fluid, and am unable to empty out alllll of the old brake fluid b4 i put in the new brake fluid. does anyone know how to do that, and can u explain it without ne big motorcycle terms lol? help would be appreciated. thnks.
- I typed in motorcycle brake bleeding on the YouTube site. Lots of videos showing how to bleed the brakes on various motorcycles. Bleeding the brakes is very easy. One point of warning, DOT 3 and DOT 4 oil is interchangeable. Not true with DOT 5. Good Luck
- Q: Can you get a special motorcycle street license for motorcycles 100ccs and under?
- if in uk most bike shops will fit them for free , if you buy from them remove wheels from bike,
