- It is not always an either or as to choice of prime mover. I have seen small town water well pumps where availability was critical. They had the pump fitted with an electric motor for normal operation and a gas engine with a clutch to use if the motor failed.
- Q: I need to get my water pump replaced because it is cracked, a coolant flush and my belt is dry. I went to pep boys because my check engine light came on.They want to charge me 950 for the job. - I would say that $950 is a very high price for a new water pump, considering that the pump by itself is less than $70. It should not take more than 3 or 4 hours to replace, so even setting aside $250 for the pump, belt, and flush (even that is a high estimate of the cost of those materials), that would mean that they are charging between $175 and $230 per hour to work on your SUV. I would recommend that you see if a male relative or friend can ask for a quote for the same work as I feel they are trying to rip you off. When I was in the Navy, a local repair shop charged my wife almost $900 for the replacement of a $50 ignition part that took 5 minutes to replace. When I returned from that deployment, I asked them for a quote for the same work and they gave me a written quote of $150.

- Q: I Have a 1982 Suzuki DT8 Outboard motor, i rebuilt the water pup, new impeller, wear plate, all that. This is the first time iv run it in a barrel, it wont pump water now. But here is the thing, when i take the inspection cover off(the little round cover that lets you acces the shift linkage), and i run the motor, it will pump water. i noticed that wile i have that cover off all the exhaust comes out that hole and not out the bottom, is the exhaust getting sucked in the pump and stopping it from circulating water?

- That is your first problem. Once that works, turn it with a 1/2 in wrench and clamp the hose.

- You need to get the large nut lose. It holds the fan/fan clutch to the water pump shaft. After you get that off it's all down hill from there.A large adjustable wrench will work on the nut but you will need to keep pump from turning to loosen it. I think it may be left hand thread. It is not on real tight. The book will help on this one.
- Q: I have a 2000 Dodge Stratus and recently had the coolant drained (not quot;flushedquot;, as the mechanic wanted to charge $125 extra for that). - the pump will quickly wear out if its leaking, and on those stratus's the water pump is run on the timing belt, which makes it a long and expensive job to replace. I wouldn't use the stop leak, just carry around a few gallons of water and keep the coolant topped up. keep an eye on your temperature gauge while your driving.
- Q: I just replaced my submersable well water pump, the wire that connects the pump, the d switch, and the water tank. Everything was installed correctly and with the help of a licensed plumber. While the D switch is closed (providing power to the pump) the pump will run for about 5 seconds then shut off for about one minute. It will continue this process until the system attains proper pressure and the D switch will open, shutting off power to the pump. The pump is brand new. Why, when power is being supplied does the pump cut on and off? We have tested the current at the well head and it shows that 230 is being supplied the whole time that the D switch is closed, which is correct.
- make sure your pump is wired 220vac. you need to restrict the flow coming out of the discharge of the pump when you are filling tanks/waterlines. Once everything is full and the pump is running at operating pressure it should quit turning off. as said above it is the thermal overload protector in the motor shutting it off. The more GPM you move the more current it pulls, current=heat. restrict it by turning your valve down by half or more.

- A horse and a half won't do much. You would be better off with a hydraulic ram type pump if you can get about a 10 or 15 foot fall before the ram. It will pump about 4 or 5 times the height of the fall, but in small quantities. It will run 24/7 without gasoline, so it will fill a tank over a long period of time. The railroads used them during the steam era when they had huge water towers out on the plains.
- Q: Im replacing the water pump on my cougar but i ran into a snag. I got the pump unbolted but to take it off, i need to unbolt a bracket that goes behind the power steering pump pulley. I cant figure out how to get that pulley off to take off the bracket. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
- it would have helped if you had given an engine size of the car the procedure is different for a v-8,and a v-6 engine,i cant answer this because i don't know an engine size,,good luck,i suggest you get a good repair manual its more informative ,and gives real good details also.
