- Q: We have a private well with a 40 year old water pump that is rusting away, and sounds like a truck. It's a double jet well pump sitting on a tank, with a second tank to one side that it's also connected to (with a thick pipe). I don't quite understand why there are two tanks (there's a third which is obviously the hot water). I'm guessing one of these is to hold water, and the other to provide air pressure? In any case, the pump runs OK, it doesn't leak, and provides plenty of pressure. It is just unbelievably loud. I've been told that replacing the bearings might take care of this problem, but seeing how the tank the pump rests upon (with a thin tube connecting it to the pump) is rotting away, and the system is older than I am, should I just replace the whole thing?
- It sounds like you have two pressure tanks. I am going to guess that the one under your pump probably went out and instead of taking it out and re-plumbing everything they just spliced in a new tank. You can get a re-build kit for most pumps but it sound like your pump is pretty old and probably being held together with faith and rust and taking it apart might cause more problems. What I would do is price out what the re-build cost and what labor might be against what a new system might be. If you decide to go with a new system I would suggest looking into getting a submersible pump, using the same tank but making sure it is in a good location and plumbed with a union. when your pressure tank finally goes out it is going to weigh a ton and trying to move it around plumbing can be difficult. good luck and happy holidays.
- Q: I have a 99 Olds Intrigue With the 3.8L (Vin K) engine. I have a belt driven water pump, but i was wondering if there is a fuse or relay that is associated with this water pump. I remember knocking a fuse out on accident while changing my radiator and now the water pump appears to not be working
- First no fuse for water pump only fuse and relay for rad. fan. First did you install serpentine belt correctly, should have diagram on rad. cover. If on right pump should work. if overheating could have bad thermostat or system needs bleeding, start, turn on heater and see if top hose on rad gets hot if not therm bad, replace, if hot look on top of thermostat housing for small bleeder screw crack open until coolant comes out then tighten,on some if there is a heater line on engine by radiator bleeder is on it. keep rad cap on till done, then remove slowly to release pressure and fill with coolant , GOOD luck.
- Q: just changed the water pump on my lower unit installed the lower unit and started motor now there is no water coming out of the upper flow tube is it becouse the engine is not warmed up yet or is something not lined up ...........
- sorry but warming the engine will not affect the water flow. i had this problem i did not have the impeller installed properly.....took it to service center 3 hrs and $185 all new water pump kit fixed my problem . would have saved me alot of time and trouble if i had taken it in earlier

- It has been years since I had a pond. It was a freestanding pool with a fountain in it. I don't recall any noise from the submersible pump, only the sound of the splashing water. - Most water pumps work on the same principle as a fan, only encased in water tight structures and using impellers. It draws water from one source and pushes it to another.

- Q: ok so i have a crack in my radiator a small crack but anyways yesterday it caused my car to over heat. i normally keep coolant in the car but it just got low and over heated pretty bad. so today the car is making a really loud annoying noise. coolant is also draining out of the bottom of the engine when the car is on. at a pretty good pace. it is coming out like right under the belt area so my friend said it is probably the water pump baring and he said it could have gotten damaged when it over heated. so i think these symptoms def point to the water pump. anyways i called a mechanic and he said that he had to change the belt to and he said he had to charge me $385. what you guys think. does he need to change the pump and the belt or just the pump? and is $385 a rip off or is that the going rate? thank you all for your knowledgeand information
- Read the above PLUS realize that you MUST use ONLY genuine Toyote coolant in your car. Other coolants will cause further deterioration of your cooling components. I have seen Toyota cylinder heads that look like Swiss cheese from using the green stuff. Also, make sure that your mechanic uses only genuine Toyota replacement parts, and NOT rebuilt pump. Replace the tensioner and idler pulleys now, as well. The price is a rip off if cheaper parts are being used. If these are all factory parts, then this price is GREAT!!
- Q: I took my 04 Grand Prix to the mechanic for a coolant change. My car had never drip coolant until after the coolant change . I took my car today to the same mechanic and he told me that the problem was the water pump and wants to charge me 70 dollars. Could changing the coolant affect the water pump. Or did the mechanic damaged the water pump on purpose.
- Changing the coolant would not damage your water pump, especially not in a short period of time. Water pumps just eventually go bad and the first sign is usually a leak. If your mechanic is going to replace your water pump for 70 dollars I think that sounds very reasonable.
- Q: Okay my well water pump keeps turning on and off, i can hear it click on and off. Then the water stops running completely! What is wrong with it?? It has been doing this since last night.
- mine did that and it needed a new captive air tank, I think they call it the part that sits in your house and fills with water. they go bad, unfortunately there is always a pretty price tag for that kind of work.

- The water pump is driven by the timing belt on this motor. If it is not done right, you could cause serious damage to the engine. Actually $800 to change the pump and timing belt is reasonable. To lower the price further you could negotiate buying your own parts. Good luck.
