- Q: I have a 1967 mustang with a 289. The carburetor that is on it is a 2bbl holley. I want to replace the intake and carb with an edelbrock intake and 600 cfm 4bbl edelbrock. The carb on it now is pretty much dead. I dont want to invest money in repairing it because I know I want to do an upgrade. I have a stock dual exhaust on it now and was wanting to replace it with some headers and an x-pipe system to have better exhaust flow. But I was wondering if I replace the with a bigger Intake for now will my car run sluggish if I wait a few months to afford an upgraded exhaust system? Or should I sit my car for a few months and do it all at once? I cannot do anything without the carb first. wasnt sure if i should let the car sit a few months to collect funds for the exhaust.
- Go ahead and do your carb and intake. The exhaust can wait and be done later. You can still drive the car just fine until you decide to do the exhaust later on. In fact it's actually better to keep driving the car with a new carb stock exhaust then to let it sit for months without being driven. I basically did the same thing with a '70 Chevelle one time. I put in a high performance motor but kept the stock exhaust. Ran just fine until I was able to afford the upgraded performance exhaust system.

- If want want to change your Vicky to dual from single exhaust and put on an H pipe that is fine, it will give you more horse power, I did it with mine, but don't mess with the catalytic converters. In most states and provinces this is illegal, so you'd be better off leaving them as is. Don't risk getting a fine.

- There's definitely been damage to your exhaust system but to diagnose it you'll need to get under your car and take a look. Could be a cracked / broken exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, or muffler.

- Solid , no acid or flux core, and also soldering paste or flux for copper pipe. Also, you would be advised to sand both ends of the copper where they will be joined before applinga the paste or flux and then doing the solder joint. If you have never done this before, I suggest you take some old pipe , and a couple of fittings and practice a bunch before you attempt anything that counts. Rock

- Your first answerer, caused me to write this. He must work for a dealer. You can have the exhaust replaced and worked on anywhere. Sears, Midas, and other independent exhaust shops can do it for you cheaper than any dealer can. Plus, in this economy, everyone will not turn away a potential sale. One thing that you cannot do, is get rid of your catalytic converter permanently. That is US EPA 100% illegal. Now as to sound, you can do anything you want. Yes, some communities have noise ordinances. I once had a vehicle where I also had a very loud exhaust. I did get a ticket. Took it to court. Won my case because, a Harley is so much louder than my truck ever was.
