- Q: A Honda timing belt is suppose to be replaced every 90,000 miles but is it necessary to replace the water pump at the same time? How long will a water pump last? I never had a water pump fail on any Honda I have owned. Of course that is probably because I always had it replaced with the timing belt?

- $70-$150 +cost of pump. Most shops have certain maintenance hours for certain jobs. Call around for exact pricing. Honestly, if you have a sockets (metric) and wrenches you can do it yourself in about an hour or two, maybe less. You don't have to mechanically inclind to replace the water pump on the 97 Wrangler. If you do it, I do recommend buying a Haynes/Chilton's book if you don't really have a clue. If you need to buy the tools, book, pump (gasket should come with it), water pump RTV, and coolant. That will still be a lot cheaper than paying somebody. Plus, you will get the joy of doing it yourself. Also, you could put the savings into a high-flow pump, vice original equipment.

- most cars, it is in the front, driven by the timing belt. If you are going to replace the pump, replace the timing belt also (if there is one), as it's probably overdue, and you have to remove it to get at the water pump. Also the tensioner. Replacing the timing belt is a difficult task. If you screw it up, you could damage the engine. .

- First- don't make assumptions. Let's begin with what you know: your car overheats when you stop but not when you drive. That's not the water pump. To get a good diagnosis, you should get a repair manual and read the troubleshooting chapter. Look for your symptoms and try to identify the problem. Without knowing more, you're driving a ten-year old cooling system. Possibly there' some build-up in the radiator that reduces flow of coolant. Could also be build-up in the cooling jackets in the motor. The controls for the electric fan could be failing, so the fan's not operating when the temperature goes up. And when you drive, air goes through the radiator sufficiently so it doesn't overheat. Could be several factors, but not necessarily the water pump. Possibly the belt that drives the water pump is slipping, but you'd likely hear a squealing noise. Hope you find the problem without just swapping out lots of parts until the problem goes away. - What you want is called a sump pump. Most have a system built into them that is triggered by rising water. The idea is to have a hole beneath that allows the inevitable water that will collect a place to go, then when a certain amount gets in the hole, the sump pump comes on and pumps it out to wherever you have the hose or pipes ran to. Being underground, good luck keeping the humidity level down. It won't be easy, and much depends on where your natural water table is, and what it is during rains. Someone in your area might know all that, I don't.
