Q: I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator.At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. At this speed the engine is producing max torque 70 lb ft the alt should only need 33 lb ft. pls help

Q: I just purchased a miller big blue 400D diesel dc welder generator . I will be using 7018 rods. There are two controls on this unit, amps and volts, for best welding results, what is the best setting? I understand that metal thickness will change this this, but I' ll be starting on 1/4 plate. When using a welder,use amperage setting .You need to set the machine to the size of rod that you will be using.
Q: I recently purchased a CAT turbo diesel generator. I checked the oil and it had water in it. After a good bit of clear water came out the oil started to drain. It could best be described as the color and consistency of a vanilla milk shake. I was told by a friend to mix some diesel with the oil and agitate it to mix it up, then to drain the oil. After the system was clear, i put fresh oil in until it reached the fill line. I started up the engine and let it run for about two hours. It was smoking white from the exhaust stack. I have also noticed that there is oil dripping from the exhaust stack. There also seems to be oil leaking from the turbo. Could this oil leak be causing the white smoke? I remained curious so i grabbed an infrared thermometer and started checking around. The exhaust manifold around the number 1 cylinder was about 100 degrees cooler than the other 3 cylinders. What the heck is going on? help would be much appreciated!

Q: I know I take for granted that I have indoor plumbing but where does the water pressure that causes water to flow come from when I turn on my sink? Is it a pump. Where does the energy come from?
The water drains out of the sink because it is a downhill flow from the sink to the sewerage outlet. The actual pressure is due to the height of the water and gravity. This can be stated as a head, in meters. Similarly the water comes out of a tap because it has a downhill flow from the supply reservoir typically. This can be a tank on a hill, or a tower. The water is transferred to the reservoir from its source like a lake by a pump, which gets it uphill to the reservoir. The pump is usually an electric one, though a diesel generator could be used as backup, or even a diesel driven pump could be used. Electricity is cheaper to run, considering the energy involved can be costly. The static pressure comes from the height of the reservoir above the tap outlet. This is also seen as a head. The typical pressure is 40 to 80 psi (equivalent to 30 to 60m of head or water column). Once the water is flowing at full bore the pressure drops, due to the pipe resistance and such effects, typically represented as 10-20psi approx. 8 to 16m of head. This is the pressure before the water leaves the tap (faucet), and is enough to flow through some device like a shower. At a remote property a tank stand may be used to get some height, or a pressure pump, which is equivalent. With a pressure pump the water is pumped into a rubber bladder like a large football bladder, so it can be squeezed out on demand. The pump runs cyclically as required to keep sufficient pressure in the bladder. This arrangement is known as an accumulator. High buildings may have related accumulators or a reservoir on top, and a pump/s to get water up there.

Calculate the reliability of the following arrangement-three months after the initial commissioning date. 1. Only one generator operating. 2. Only generator operating, one generator standby. 3. 0.5 failure per year would mean 1 failure per 2 years. Keeping the generator off for 2 years is no good, it may not start. It is best to operate the machines at least once every few months for some length of time. The longest time to failure is usually achieved by sharing the load and operating all equipment simultaneously. This method is very application dependant! Hope this properly answers your question
Q: Did some searching, and found little other than single, model specific, manuals (either paper or on CD). The paper manuals are $50-60 each. Single model PDF manuals on CD are about $20.Does anyone know if a comprehensive set of shop service manuals is even available for Yamaha Portable Generators? (gas and diesel) I don't mind paying, but I don't want just ONE manual, I want 'em all. That way I don't have to go through this again when a different model Yamaha comes into my shop. How much power do they consume? How big is your diesel generator? A big enough diesel generator might as well be a power plant. A town full of Alaskan natives aren't going to use as much power as say, a town full of Americans.
