Detroit diesel used 2 cycle engines in the 50's and up. They may still use them, I'm not sure. 2 cycle engines does not always mean you mix oil in the fuel. It means the engine fires every stroke, not every other stroke, (4cycle engines) The most common series I'm familiar with is the 53 and 71 series.

Vacuum packed rice grains and beans seems to be ideal. All you need is water and a source of heat.
Q: I own a 2300 square foot home with an upstairs and downstairs heatpump. If I wanted to buy a generator to use in the event my power went down what size should I shoot for. I would like to be able at a minimum to provide upstairs heat (1000 square feet), maintain the fridge and provide minimal light at night. Basic survival type stuff. Heat pumps are pretty big users of power. I would get at least a 3500 watt but that would be good for heat, fridge, a couple lights and a tv only. Bigger would be better. It may consume 5-10 gallons of gasoline per day. Running your own generator is not cheap.

Generators don't have heads. A 1 MW unit might cost around USD75,000.- equivalent in a 2 pole configuration although, not being responsible, I certainly don't guarantee that number. Try Tata, Aakar Group, Prakash Diesel, Genex Electronics Industries.

Is this generator going to be used in a location which is normally served by grid power. If so is it proposed to use the distribution system normally used when on the grid? If the answer to these questions is yes. The first step is to isolate the normal energy source. This has two purposes. a) to protect your equipment when power is restored and b) to protect people and equipment working on the external circuit. Once this is isolated wire the generator into the circuit (closing isolating switch if hard wired). Start the generator using normal procedures with minimal load in place. Slowly increase load until desired effect is achieved. When external power is returned. Slowly reduce load and isolate generator. Restore normal grid connection. Shut off generator.
