Q:I recently purchased a portable generator that is 7 hp and 3050 continuous watts, i tried to calculate the efficiency as follows:743 watts 1 hp7 X 743 5201 watts, (so at 100 percent efficiency, 5201 watts is possible to produce from a 7 hp generator.)the unit produces 3050 watts, so the 5201 watts (possible watts)/3050(actually produced watts) (0.5864) or approximately 59% efficiency, this does not seem right, it should be about half that.What am i doing wrong?
You are calculating only the shaft horsepower to electric power output efficiency. That is separate and different from the internal combustion engine efficiency. Calculate that by comparing the fuel used and its heat content and its ability to do work versus the shaft horsepower.
Q:I read about it in an old Mother Earth news (1993?) The car was mainly powered by the gen. The batteries would only kick-in for hills, boost of power, etc. I am interested in this design, anyone know if it works well? Can I use a 480volt 3ph gen-set to power motor/Drive for more efficiency/power? I already know about the volt,prius,leaf.

If you mean the build-in pcb of a fuel/diesel generator which build-up voltage initially and then keep it stable under any load, then read this: First you need to see your generator minimum requirements to determine specs of AVR. You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.

i)Increase the no. of solar panels, as it is a one time expenditure only. A battery bank(of sufficient size) A small DC generator ii) If you live in an area where oil is really cheap try investing in an AC generator The first option will always be better

Neither. At these sizes, it's most efficient to use a gas turbine, in which the expanding gas of the burning fuel turns the turbine directly, rather than going through the lossy process of boiling water. A large gas turbine can be as much as 57% efficient in electricity production, which is far higher than a diesel engine. A gallon of diesel fuel contains about 130,000 BTU, or 137 megajoules (MJ). At a 55% conversion rate, that would mean 75.35 MJ of electricity. There are 3.6 MJ in a KWh, so that's 20.9 KWh per gallon of diesel, or 20,930 KWh for 1000 gallons.
Q:have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.
When you connect the battery, to the automotive alternator, you are making it operational, by activating the rotating magnetic field. It is slowing down, because it is now supplying power to its own field, as well as charging the battery. As the automotive alternator charges the battery, it may pickup speed over time. However, considering the drastic RPM drop when you connected the battery, I believe the power provided by the turbine is inadequate. It may be to small for the application, or the head provided by your water source is too low. Switching to a generator, designed to provide domestic power, i.e., 120/240 VAC 50/60 Hz, will greatly complicate your power-plant. Such devices must be rotated at their design speed, in order to produce power at the correct voltage and frequency. In contrast, automotive type alternators, along with their voltage regulators, whether they are internal or external, are designed to provide constant DC voltage over a wide range of shaft speed. Frequency is not an issue, because these three phase, alternating current generators, output direct current, via full-wave, solid state, internal rectification. Furthermore, any generator requires field current, unless it is a small generator, with exceptionally powerful permanent magnets. I recommend you stay with the automotive generator, along with a large deep cycle battery, and use an inverter to get alternating current. The battery, will be helpful in handling surges, or temporary loads, exceeding the automotive alternator's capacity.

Diesel cars are not in favor by the American public that is why. If Americans will not buy them and Automakers cannot sell them, Automakers cannot afford to make them domestically. Remember the diesels of the 1970s. dirty, loud, noisy and costly maintenance. Yes they have improved, in Europe, but the American public has a long memory. That plus diesel fuel is not available everywhere. you cannot pull into EVERY gas station to get it. It is too bad too. I do understand that the new generation of diesels is just as you say it is. clean, efficient, quieter, and peppy. Someday they will come to the US. US automakers will take the technology that they have in Europe and sell it here. US automakers have not shelved the idea. they just do not think that most American carbuyers like the idea. Would you like to take a $1-2 BILLION gamble on the idea? Remember Chrysler. it is being sold for $8 billion. I saw an estimate recently that said GM was only worth $18 billion. Therefore, a mistake could cost 10% or more of the value of an auto company and put it closer to bankruptcy.

I would like to help--but I need to know what size of generator you want 2.8 k-12 k ; and what type of fuel Gasoline, propane, diesel. I would ask why don't you mount a Onan Micro quite or light into the side or front of your fifth wheel---but with out seeing your trailer I have no idea what to recommend
