During the test, power surged unexpectedly, causing an explosion and driving temperatures in the reactor to more than 2,000 degrees Celsius—melting the fuel rods, igniting the reactor’s graphite covering, and releasing a cloud of radiation into the atmosphere. Causes: The precise causes of the accident are still uncertain, but it is generally believed that the series of incidents that led to the explosion, fire and nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl was caused by a combination of reactor design flaws and operator error. Q: have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.: all alternators produce alternating current---by definition--duh it is then rectified by (usually internally mounted) diodes you are loading your system with a partially discharged battery and the voltage that the regulator is set to is trying to charge the battery at a rate greater than the mechanical power (turbine + water) can supply thus it slows down until the demand matches the supply if you left the system until the battery voltage increases you would find that the system would turn faster until the voltages matched each other and it would be doing 3000 rpm

Q: Have a big V12 Diesel Generator what is the purpose of the governor / actuator and also the Speed and Load Controller?: The governor keeps the motor from running faster than a set rate, an actuator receives an input from a button and causes a mechanical device to engage. Speed and Load controllers determine how fast the generator motor should turn over for a certain electrical demand, as in number of devices plugged in to the electric socket.

Thanks.: A generator is usually powered by a diesel or gas (petrol) engine which powers an alternator to produce mains power for hours provided it is topped up with fuel. A UPS uses a large battery and a high powered inverter circuit to produce mains power but is not expected to power equipment for very long, just long enough to shut them down safely without loss of data.

Will they switch to overhead lines in the not so distant future?: I'd like to think that the US will catch up with Europe in terms of rail electrification. Unfortunately it seem unlikely. As has been hinted, electrification works best when there are high passenger densities together with a high frequency service. The set-up costs are initially high, but the running costs compared to diesel are generally lower. Besides, an electrified rail network can be as green as the power supply it's hooked up to. Sure it could be supplied from a dirty great coal-fired power station, but there is nothing to prevent the energy being generated in greener, more environmentally responsible ways where such facilites exist (or can be provided).
