- Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

- you need to read the documentation. No such thing as a diesel that runs forever All engines need fluids checked. In generators, there is prime power and standby power. Your warranty will be different for each type. The prime units can run for very long times, but are more expensive and have oil adding systems, etc to automoatically maintain levels and things like that. The diesel engine can be shhutdown and restartted like a gas engine. The turbo and starter motor are the real reasons for not doing short starts and stops. Also, how much load/environment you put on the generator makes a difference in how long it can run too. They can run for a long time as long as they are checked and maintained.
- Q: I have a van and wish to kit it out with generator, welder and power tools. The genrator needs to cope with a 180amp rated welder plus 110v power tools (grinder, drill etc) being used at the same time. The generator needs to be diesel powered not petrol. The ones i've looked at are rated in Kva's. Not too sure how to work out how many Kva's i will require. Help please.
- It will probably take something like 6.6 KVA's to run it. Similar one's take a 220 VAC, 30 amp circuit. The Model 180 MIG welds up to 1/4 steel. 6 heat settings and infinitely adjustable wire speed control welds a wider range. Max. output 160 amps with 30% duty cycle. Requires 220 Volts 60 cycle 30-amp circuit.

- A generator is usually powered by a diesel or gas (petrol) engine which powers an alternator to produce mains power for hours provided it is topped up with fuel. A UPS uses a large battery and a high powered inverter circuit to produce mains power but is not expected to power equipment for very long, just long enough to shut them down safely without loss of data.

- Just about all the rings you purchase new today come pre-gapped to the correct tolerance, just like spark plugs. Way in the past, of course back then it was necessary to check the gap. With such a small engine 1/16 is plenty.
- Q: I need a generator that will power alot of stuff, preferably cheap as possible, or any other power source of that kind.it will need to power about 5 normal appliances and a 600w bulbany ideas
- Cheap as possible - go Chinese if you want to use it once a year and don't care if it goes paf at any time. Honda makes some good units if you want quality and back up. You need to add up the power draw of your five normal applications and your 600w lighting load. Add 25% and the unit will be adequate. If your appliances have induction motors you will have to have at least three times the rated power of the motor(s) to get them to start safely. If you need more than 3000 watts of constant power you should consider diesel, for longevity go for slow speed i.e.1500 or 1800 rpm engine speed. Price will range from $400 for a 2500w Chinese thingy up to at least $14,000 for a fully enclosed automatic 12KvA super silenced slow speed diesel unit on a slide. Running costs get high with the bigger petrol units. Inverters are good, but you will still have to generate power some how for the batteries - wind, water, solar, generator etc. Will be more expensive to set up but will be better long term for a cabin or similar. - Well. I don't see the point. If the earth is destroyed, as so many of the 2012 lies say it will be, then the only thing that your bomb shelter will accomplish is to allow you to live 5 seconds longer than all the rest of the people on the planet. Seems like a steep price to pay for an extra 5 seconds of terror. On the other hand, since none of the doomsday predictions will occur, you might make a tidy sum if you market it correctly. There are people who are doing exactly that. Converting old Minute Man missile silos into survival condos, and many other things. Good luck with that, but stay prepared for buyer's remorse when Jan. 1, 2013 rolls around and the world is still here, and your clients are each out thousands or tens of thousands of dollars - and they know you have it. - Rango is correct.Straight electric would be the way to go.All that diesel does is power a big generator anyways.I don't see it happening in the near future though.The trucks on the highway are wasting much more fuel than the railroads are.One gallon of fuel will move a ton of freight on the rails about 400 miles.A truck gets it about 59 miles. Bob just as a side note we don't have short time rating anymore on locomotives like the SD 70 and the C44ac and theC45ac.They will grind along all day at low speed.
