- Q: i am going to buy a second hand generator which is 108kva diesel enginehow can i test it so i know it starts but also is capable of running around 80-100kvai want to make sure it is strong and still working and not that it just startsplease help thankssam
- The correct way to test it would be to hook it up to a load bank, which can place a full load to what the generator is rated for. You can do that by hiring a generator company to test it for you. You could hook up as many power tools to it as you can get your hands on to see if it is putting out, but it will not match a load bank.
- Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a Kubota Diesel Generator. I have read in many places that the Kubota Diesel engine is the gold standard of Diesel engines. So I'm not worried about that. What i need to know is this, is the generator as a whole dependable? Will over loading it for a few short seconds when the AC compressor kicks in burn it out or shorten its life?Any other insight would be appreciated. Thanks for your answers
- Kubota diesel plants are being used more and more in industry, replacing some of the old standbys like Kohler, Perkins and even Caterpillar in lighter applications. I don't think you will regret buying a Kubota.
- Q: I have an old generator that the motor doesn't run. I want to salvage the generator head and make something like a wind, steam, or bio diesel generator I haven't made my mind up yet. But for now I need to dismantle the head from the motor. I think it has some kind of a ratio box on it too I'm not sure I've never done this before. I sure would appreciate any help!
- Generator Power Head
- Q: If an 5MW diesel generator works for 30 days non stop how much diesel will it use.
- the rule of thumb is that an efficient diesel, working continuously burns 1 gal/hr for every 15hp developed. A 5MW generator therefore requires about 6,705 hp. 6705/15 447 gal/hr in 30 days30 * 24 *447 321,840 gallons. Given that very large engines can be extraordinarily efficient, which will make up for some of the mechanical and electrical losses, a good guess would be 300,000 gallons
- Q: If it is not run continuosly in what intervals should it be stopped and what is the standstill time?
- It is not good to run a Diesel generator throughout the year without stopping. It requires regular stopping for maintenance, at least once a week for cleaning or replacement of oil filters and replacement of parts.THE SHUTDOWN MAY LAST 8 OR !6 HOURS DEPENDING ON THE PARTS TO BE REPLACED.
- Q: I live what i consider near a nuclear generating station in NJ.The site is Toms River Nuclear Generating Station, how would a melt down effect Rahway,NJ or the surrounding areas in general? How wide would the radius be? Or how much damage would be expected? Not stupid answers and no, You don't live in the ring of fire b.s. so don't worry about a tidal wave. Im questioning the unknown and the unexpected.
- The answer depends entirely on the kind of accident or incident. It is not possible to predict without the hypothetical accident type, since not all accidents result in a core meltdown, and there are different ways for the core to end up in melt down situation. The danger zone also depends a great deal on the wind and weather conditions at the time and immediately afterwards. Obviously, if the wind is blowing from your location toward the plant, then there is less likelihood that you will be contaminated.
- Q: I just purchased a KOHLER generator 500 KVA would it be safe to run at 10 % load for 6-8 hours
- 500 kva is a big generator and I am guessing it is diesel. It is safe to run at 10% load however it is not good for the engine itself to make a practice of that. It can lead to lower cylinder temperatures and incomplete combustion over time. It is always better to run at or as close to max load as you can.
- Q: If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought.
- Why can't America shut off power for two hours a month? This reduces fossil fuel consumption by 0.1% to 0.2%. Those resources that make power, are not all fossil fuel powered. And this reduction is negligible. Besides, for the last few months, my power has been off at least this much If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. And produce NO measurable effect. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. Backup diesel generators in all cases, so we move from hydroelectric, nuclear, and fossil fuels with50% thermal efficiency, to fossil fueled generators with less than 33% thermal efficiency there. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, Not in my neighborhood. We pretty much wander around to see who all had been blacked out too. but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? Just a thought Minimum power usage then, so minimal effect. You'd need to turn it off in mid-afternoon during peak demand. And all the traffic lights stop working. Did you see Live or Die Hard? Either 9 persons in 10 needs to die, along with the support staff of plants and animals, or we need to live differently. Some incremental steps that will have some detectable effects: - ground all non-emergency aircraft flights, forever; - remove all dams (slowly of course), and stop all wells, and use solar power to coalesce water needs from the air; - ban all personal automobiles from cities, right after you implement mass transit that is faster than riding horses, to all in-city destinations.
- Q: I am looking into using solar energy and generators for commercial use. Using the solar energy during the day is a piece of cake obviously. But I would need a backup generator for night-time use. If I were to get a commercial grade backup generator, could I essentially recharge it during the day while it is not in use? Any other suggestions that this route are welcome. Maybe even a backup storage (battery) for the the excess solar energy. Something to store the unused energy?
- Generator is a vague word. Assuming you are using it to mean motor-generator sets which have a gas or diesel engine driving an alternator. No, you can't charge a motor generator set, it runs on gasoline or diesel fuel, you can't convert sunlight or electricity to fuel. But, you can use excess power during the day to charge batteries that can be later used to supply power. Note that battery storage can be expensive, and needs a lot of space and maintenance. .
- Q: I work at a high rise building as security and was interested to know why smoke would come out of a generator? What would be the main reason? Engine too hot? A snapped wire?
- What kind of generator and how is it fueled? A diesel generator will smoke at start-up, and if it is an older unit burning old fuel, it will smoke in operation as well. That would be smoke from the exhaust. If you are writing about smoke from the windings - that is the generator itself - that would be due to an overload and/or winding failure, and caused by the system overheating. If you are writing about smoke coming off the engine - that could be from an oil leak, or debris falling onto the engine and being combusted by heat. Only the first of these is 'normal'.
