- It depends on the model you buy and typically the more expensive models will equip themselves with a better muffler. (Basically each model will describe their decibel rating). I find most generators will provide about as much noise as a lawn mower. So, it is great to run during the day, but you might consider not running them during the night. I also think a diesel motor is just fine to run as a generator- I find the diesel rigs will run at lower RPMS, and last longer. If you are pluging this thing into your home, dont forget to have a professionally installed transfer switch to avoid electricuting the lineman, otherwise you will need to run extension cords to what you want powered.

- that's not how fuel consumption is measured, unless you were to drive at the same speed for an hour. It is measured in MILES or KM per liter. That way you just fill your gas tank, pay attention to how much is in it, look at your odometer, and see how many miles until your tank runs out. Then divide number of miles by liters in your tank.

- First make sure the fuel is fresh periodically. Old fuel deteriorates makes it hard it start and run. Second check the oil see if it is clean, check the oil filter too. Third check the fuel filter, change once a year if not used because of bad / old fuel. Forth Check the out put of the engine / voltage / oil pressure / amperage / operating temperature / current fuses / transfer switches are working properly. Listen and make sure the engine is running smooth, no misses. Should be good to go then.

- Let's say you've worked out all of the basic power balances. How many times do you expect the batteries to be recharged in a year? Even really good batteries will only recharge a limited number of times (maybe 2000?). And they are expensive!

- Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??
- If you are seeing a voltage with no load, there is at least some residual magnetism in the field. Flashing the field probably wouldn't make any difference. I'd look for an open field winding or bad regulator if your machine uses brushes. If your machine is brushless, check for an open exciter winding, bad regulator, shorted or open diodes in the rotating field or open windings in the rotating field.
