Q: I have to wonder. WHY don't we have a car right now in 2010 that gets 100+ mpg?Ok we have the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius that get 50MPG+ WELL why not DOUBLE or TRIPLE or QUADRUPLE the Batteries and get 100MPG??? Seriously WHY NOT PACK Enough Lithium Ion batteries in there to get 300MPG?? You mean to tell me that with all the technology we have today in 2010 that we can't come up with a Hybrid that gets 100MPG??? PURE NonsenseSomeone somewhere is keeping the 100MPG car from being produced. Simple as that. You mean to tell me that you can't pack enough Lithium Ion batteries into a CAR to get 100MPG??? Larger battery packs do not improve the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. The batteries are used as the electrical equivalent of springs. There are some important limitations on the number of miles per gallon any car can get in the real world. Climate control is a critical one - when energy has to go into keeping the passengers warm in the winter and cool in the summer it can't go into moving the car forward.

I think you maybe right. The Muffler should not be that hot. Don`t chace futher damage, drain the tank and start over. Diesel cools and lubes the engine and Gas will destroy a diesel engine quick.

Plugging a generator into an ordinary wall outlet limits you 15-20 amps of single phase power, or less than 2000-2500w. And it would only energize one leg, or about half the circuits in your house. You'd also want to throw your main breakers to prevent you from backfeeding the neighborhood and/or electrocuting a lineman. Overall, it's not a safe or efficient way to connect a generator. You want a generator plugin that will safely allow more power to fed into your house along with a transfer switch that will properly isolate your house from the grid whenever you want to connect a generator. As for sizing, you need to figure out what you really need vs. what you have, and for how long. For most storm-related outages, you can probably get by with a relatively small amount of power (refrigerator, a few lights, etc) for the few hours or at most 1-2 days that power will likely be out. If you want to cover longer outages or you have higher level of necessities, then you'll need a larger generator. Also, you need to worry about a fuel supply especially if you're planning for a long outage. Fuel transportation and storage can both be problematic, although the problems vary by fuel type (gasoline, diesel, natural gas or propane).
Q: I have a bunch of old diesel left over from y2k, a family friend stored 10k gallons and its turned a brown color, it dosent small funny at least to me, still looks red if you put it up to the light but it is not vivid red like it used to be it has a dingy brown color. look in the yellow pages and discuss with a local petroleum distributor. diesel tanks grow all sorts of mossy things. a last suggestion is to have a sample laboratory analyzed for water and other growing organics and particulates.

Probably will not run. Diesel fuel will not burn unless under high compression and heat. That is why diesel engines use glow plugs instead of spark plugs and run a much higher compression ratio. Drain the fuel tank and refill with proper fuel.

Even some older Gen-Sets have contacts for a remote start switch. This is where you might wire in sensors to detect when commercial power is lost. You may install a relay to actuate those contacts. You can control that relay with a computer controlled module that is run by your software. The computer you have installed the thumb scanner on can control this. If the software is for this specific generator, then it may already include a remote start, as well as a logger to record start and stop times. Kits are often available.

Q: I want to be able to plug my APC Smart-UPS RT 8000VA 208V into a diesel generator when our power will be down for an extended period of time. The max OUTPUT of the APC unit is 6400w. Does that mean I need at least a 6400w Generator?
If the unit is rated 8000 VA, and the output is 6400 W. that hints that the through-put efficiency is about 80%. You need a generator that will supply at least 125% of the load you apply to the UPS.
