Q: I have a 3 phase 30k 60hz generator what would I need to do to use this to power my home ?: You need a Transfer switch, either manual $350.00 or automatic over a $1,000.00 The switch will stop the possibility of back feeding power either from the utility to the generator or from the generator to the utility.

The mechanical energy is provided by an engine that uses some type of fuel like diesel or natural gas. All generators spin to produce power. well then how come a generator work without the help of anything? Backup generators do seem to magically produce electricity during a power failure Backup generators are fitted with automatic controls that handle the starting and placing of the generator onto the buildings power bus. The automatic controls are powered from the AC mains to keep a set of batteries charged. THe batteries are used at the beginning of a blackout to power the automation and start the generator. (Once the generator is running these batteries may then be recharged from the power produced by the generator or when the AC mains is re-established.) Electronic controls sense the loss of AC power and trigger a starting sequence. The generators starter is engaged to crank over the diesel or Gas engine. The controls monitor this process to ensure the engine actually starts and that an excessive amount of cranking doesn't occur. Once the engine is running and brought up to proper speed additional automatic controls disconnect the now powerless AC mains from the buildings buss and connect the Generator power to the buildings electrical panel. Based upon the size of the generator some or all of the buildings power may be supplied by the backup generator. Without the automation the process is still the same except a persone would have to perform the process of starting the gen and placing it on line. Its not difficult to do but does require some trainng. Automation performs this startup process quicker that what a humam would be likely to do.

When ethanol burns, it does about the same amount of pollution as diesel fumes do. Healthdon't know Economyif you remove diesel out of the equation, you lose the economy. You cannot haul freight efficiently without diesel power, you cannot operate most generators efficiently without diesel power, etc. The reason why they make such a big deal about diesel emissions is because of the black smoke it produces. It does no greater damage than gasoline emissions do. Plus, if every car ran off of diesel fuel instead of gasoline, prices would be much much cheaper, crude oil would be used more efficiently and there wouldn't be a shortage like there is. PLUSyou would be able to turn that 30-35 mpg car into a 55-60 mpg car if you ran it off of diesel. And I also like to blow black smoke out of my Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel tooits fun, plus a lot of power.

Q: I live in a location without municipal water supply. I could buy a natural gas generator, and hire an electrician to connect it to my breaker box, but I believe there is a way to connect solar panels to a battery system to provide enough power for my 220 volts submerged pump. I have 2 horses, 24 chickens, 2 dogs, 4 cats, 3 parakeets, and 3 people that need water in the event of a hurricane, national power grid attack,etc. There are solar powered generators advertised, but they are not powerful enough for 220. Also, my whole neighborhood of over 200 homes all lives off their own water wells, and we all suffered during hurricane Ike: 10 days without a water supply.: For that heavy a load, I'd think that a gasoline or diesel generator might be more appropriate. While you could possibly set up a bank of solar-charged batteries to power a 220-volt inverter, the power requirements could make that approach cost-prohibitive.

Q: I have been researching EV cars and conversions and am wondering about using a generator instead of batteries. I am not an enviro-nut concerned about making an emission free vehicle, just one that is cheap to drive. It seems to me that using a generator to power the motor, although it would use gas, would be way more efficient than a normal gas engine that is in a car, and would be lighter than batteries. Also, if it is a diesel generator I could run bio-diesel to cut back on emissions. Am I correct in this assumption?: i have considered the same thing. it will take a good size generator to power an ev tho. say you have a 15hp motor in your conversion. you will need a 15hp generator minimum to power it and it must have a large enough surge rating to handle the start up currents. one hp equals 746 watts. all in all the idea is sound but a little more involved than it seems.

Q: I been thinking, and it seems to me our future vehicles would be best suited with a small 1~ liter diesel engine turning a generator to power 4 electric motors at the wheels of the car/truck, just like locomotives use. Advantages would be significantly increased fuel economy, AWD, no transmission and axle weight(offset by weight of batteries, longer lasting diesel engine, easier and cheaper to repair due to small engine size, fewer moving parts, and decreased complexity, regenerative braking, significantly reduced emmissions, less noise, no idling when not moving.Seems the advantages would vastly outweigh the disadvantagesDoes anyone build such a vehicle?: Hybrids will be replaced with electrical cars.
