Q: If i am using a permanent magnet dc motor as generator then how should i calculate how much electricity the motor will produce ? or lets say i want to produce 1kw power with permanent magnet dc motor then how much hp motor i shd choose
I'm not an expert on this, but I'll give it my best guess. To try to point you in the right direction. First, you need to know the torque of this magnet. 1 horse power 0.74569 kilowatts So to get a 1 kilowatts, you need 1.35962 horsepower. The motor will have a certain efficiency. I do not know if this is factored in to the motors power rating, however if the efficiency is, say, 90%. Then you will need to divide the horse power by 0.9 to get the correct horse power rating. Is this a motor part of a diesel / fuel generator, or is it part of a wind turbine / water turbine?
Q: I can't find any article that will say either. I'm assuming not nuclear.
I got both in my f350 super duty with 17942 horse powers that will pull an air craft carrier straight out of the ocean
Q: I inherited a never used generator from a family estate with no motor. After a tornado here last fall I've decided to build a gen-set with it and I have a few questions. 1) Does the 1800 rpm generator mechanical specification mean that the required engine rpm must be a minimum, maximum 1800 rpm or both? Could it be more or is the chance to ruin it a possibility? I want to stay safe.2) Obviously I'm assuming the 25 hp engine requirement is a minimum but how much bigger can it be without wet stacking problems?3) With these generator output specifications can I power my household without damaging anything?I was planning diesel (still researching brands) and connecting direct. Thoughts?
1) The 1800 RPM specification is the speed which will produce the 60 Hz output. This frequency is critical in some of your household electronics, maybe. If the speed is lower than 1800 RPM, the hertz will be lower. If speed is higher, the hertz will be higher. 2) The 25 HP driver is probably sufficient for your generator. A more powerful engine will not return the value for the extra cost of the larger driver. However, a larger driver will give you perhaps a better frequency control. 12.5 KW is (in theory) 12500 / 746 16.75 HP. I'm not sure what 'wet stacking' is. 3) .It will power most households. You may have some problem starting a large AC unit, if you have your electric clothes dryer, stove, oven and a larger lighting load on at the time it comes on. TexMav
Q: I am leaving a career as an aviation electrician after 23 years and have applied for a job as a diesel locomotive electrician with Union Pacific. I was notified about a skills test and was hoping to brush up a bit before the test. Which areas should I focus on studying? Also what can I expect on a day to day basis working in this field? And lastly, although I can troubleshoot and wire a jumbo liner in my sleep I don't have specific experience with large generators and motors. How will this affect me in the hiring process. Thanks in advance for any help.
Well, two others have answered, and I consider their reputation to be good. I do not have railroad experience nor have I ever worked for the railroads. However, you did ask what you should brush up on, so I'll use my lay knowledge. Just realize, I could be completely in the weeds with this. Chief skill - Safety. Before anything else, railroads are very much into safety. Review anything you can find on high power high current safety procedures. Brush up on AC/DC/AC inverters. AC traction is replacing DC in locomotives now to some extent. (More on BNSF than UP) It isn't clear if this is a fad or a movement in some views, but I think it's a movement. I could be wrong. You will want to look at alternator technology (as opposed to generator but don't ignore that), you will want to brush up on your power thyristor theory, AC theory, and computer control skills (most loco's have PC's on board. It isn't entirely clear to me at this remove how much of that is simply reporting (I suspect a great deal) versus control (I suspect very little - as evidenced that a loco will keep going even if the computer is totally trashed.) Study power factor and correcting it. (This is more a design issue than maintenance, but you may want to know the basics on how that works so you can keep it working.) Know how to affect the speed of an AC motor (frequency, number of poles), vs. how to affect the speed of a DC motor (voltage or current). Study back EMF and why that is important to a maintainer. (DC systems.) Again, I can be completely in the weeds here and giving you bogus tips. Use a search engine to look up Locomotive maintenance and the like. Final note: Railroads are death on any drug or alcohol use. (Rule G). If you use, don't bother. Some railroads will use hair snips, which will tell the tale more than 6 months back.
Q: How to shut off the diesel generator
Diesel generator set manual start: first test alarm system is normal, the control switch is cut in the manual (MAN) position, the diesel generator set can start on their own.
Q: I would like to idle my 1981 mercedes benz 300sd for about 4 to 8 hours a day. will i hurt my car somehow if i do this?i am buring diesel to generate powers to charge my battery bank, so i have power for my power tools, it's hard to explain
It would be cheaper in the long run to by a portable generator. The fuel wear on the engine far outweigh the cost. ???
Q: If hydrogen is actually costing 6 to 15 times the energy to manufacture, will cost trillions to provide the infrastructure, then why are so many trying to push it? If battery powered vehicles (full electrics) are only able to get 20 to 75 miles per charge, why do we like them? Personally I like the idea of the new clean diesel engines being provided, and mated with hybrid technology. Pros? Diesel fuel infrastructure is already in place, only needs a little expansion. Hybrid tech is already showing itself to be superior to hydrogen in durability, and in cost savings. Cons - I dont really see them modern diesels are cleaner, quieter and more powerful than ever. Hybrids, especially with the American mindset of GO GO GO are showing they can go and save fuel. Tell me some of your ideas and thoughts on this topic. Enjoy
My father has bought a VW diesel unfortunately he bought before the new really clean blueteck diesels came out but i too think this is the way to go. when we were talking to the salesmen at the VW dealer they said Supposedly you can literally breath from the tailpipe of the diesels due out in 08. personally ill let him try it.
Q: Also Onan generator Diesel Fuel filter# 149-2513 ?Also Onan generator Air filter#140-2897 ?
napa gold 1064 for an oil filter or Wix 1334 (replacement for the Onan filter) and Onan 122-0833 are physically the same. fuel filter 3063 napa I'm having trouble with the air cleaner
Q: I have two deisel engines and two tank feeds, how can I connect the genset (4KVA) . I am conerned when the engines are idling or even running they will start the genset. I do not want to put an extra tank.Thank you
If your tank has another port on it for a fuel line that is where you hook up. If not go to the supply line at the tank and put in a T fitting and then a shut off valve for each engine. Run the supply line to the generator from that T. You will also need a return line from the generator that you can T into at the return line from the engine at the tank. Many people that convert from gas to diesels run into these same problems. Often a fitting is made up that is put in the fuel fill line to allow for the return line. The generator supply and return lines will be smaller then the engine fuel lines. Running the engines will not cause the generator to start.
Q: for electricity
If you are going to use a small generator, natural gas will be likely to cost less than diesel; but I still think buying from PGE will cost less. Possible exception: You need power in the middle of nowhere, for a short time, and PGE will charge lots of money to run a line and new transformer to the location. (In this case, you still may wish to *rent* the generator)
