If you know how a motor turns then in its simplest terms, a generator is a backwards motor. Electricity powers the motor. In a generator an engine turns the motor producing electricity. Its about passing wires through magnetic fields and such.

The advantages of dieselelectric outweigh steam, mostly due to the high maintenance required on coal-fired steam engines. Another large factor is the ability of electrical generator to drive the traction motors required to overcome the inertia of the enormous mass of the freight when the train is starting up. Efficiency is not simply the mechanical efficiency of the system, but the ability to maintain the system and adapt it to various tasks.

If it has a raised pantograph on the roof (or in some cases, a slider connecting to an electric live rail next to the track), it's electric. If it emits exhaust gas, it's diesel (or steam). Rango forgot about hydrodynamic transmissions. Not all diesel trains have electric transmission, though it's used by a majority of diesel trains in the world. And some modern diesel locomotives actually have a very good noise dampening, so they are not much louder than an electric locomotive.

If you mean the build-in pcb of a fuel/diesel generator which build-up voltage initially and then keep it stable under any load, then read this: First you need to see your generator minimum requirements to determine specs of AVR. You will probably found a label on generator with those Information: Ex. volt (maximum excitation voltage) Ex. amp (maximum excitation amperage) Your AVR output must exceed those specs. If generator is brushless type in most cases it does. Also input voltage of AVR must be the same as output of generator (ex. 110V110V, 220V220V). If generator is triple phase then you can do the same (ex. 380V380V, 440V440V) but if generator have output in star formation then you can use node for a smaller voltage of AVR (ex. 380V220V, 440V253V). If generator work in parallel operation (usually marine main generators does) then things get complicated. In this case AVR is good to support current transformer to make generator more elastic under load fluctuations and match other generators in the same circuit.

If they are shut down and there is no grid power, then they would use diesel generators to run the cooling systems, the generator would need refueling every eight hours. If they are operational, they produce more than enough power for the cooling system. A conventional nuclear power plant is at it's most dangerous when shut down which is ironic since most safety protocols demanded of them requires shutting them down whenever there is a slight risk such as what happened at Fukishima, had Fukishima been left on, there would not have been a problem. You could bet that even if the entire grid may take years to rebuild, the nuclear power plants, hospitals and even grocery stores would have priority and would have power very quickly, a grid doesn't have to be completely repaired for portions of it to work. Solar storms are really not a civilization ending threat, merely an inconvenience as it might take some time for the entire grid to be operational again but that does not mean portions of it wouldn't be operational sooner as in days. Of course, conventional solid fuel rod nuclear technology were developed for expediency in producing weapons grade plutonium and the proprietary fuel rods allowed the manufacturers to direct the economic benefits to themselves much as printer manufacturers do with inkjet cartridges. A competing technology called liquid flouride thorium reactors could not melt down, could not explode, could not leak, shuts down safely if cooling power is lost, stays shutdown safely without power, and consumes existing nuclear waste reducing the nuclear wastes to a small amount that only needs to be stored for 350 years instead of the current 30,000 years. The military had no need for it, the government didn't want it because it did not employ an army of technicians, the reactor manufacturers didn't want it as it did not have proprietary nuclear fuel rods.

The military has some Kawasaki KLR 650's converted to diesel, try hunting for one of them at army surplus stores. You do realize that bio-diesel takes more energy to produce than gasoline right? That's why it has been abandoned as an alternative fuel. But by all means go ahead, a diesel bike would be cool!

Q:I have a bunch of old diesel left over from y2k, a family friend stored 10k gallons and its turned a brown color, it dosent small funny at least to me, still looks red if you put it up to the light but it is not vivid red like it used to be it has a dingy brown color. It was originally RED diesel.Im afraid to run this in my generator, is there any additive I can add to clean it up or fix it that you have PERSONAL experience with.?
look in the yellow pages and discuss with a local petroleum distributor. diesel tanks grow all sorts of mossy things. a last suggestion is to have a sample laboratory analyzed for water and other growing organics and particulates.

I agree. This has just recently become an option as ULSD was just mandated in Nov 2006, and newer diesels manufactured recently must have stricter emissions standards and must have particulate traps on the exhaust. High NOx levels are still of some concern because of the excess heat and pressures created by the high compression in diesel engines. Also it's easier to use biofuels. You don't need a flex anything! I have 4 diesels, and I use biodiesel in all of them for 3 reasons: 1 - Reduces dependence on foreign oil 2 - Makes a diesel run better due to superior lubrication 3 - Whether global warming is true or not, I'm at least doing my part with out even doing anything different. Good call pro-diesel. Hopefully others will see the light.
Q:How bout you??? According to physics traction is not dependent on surface area. I'm vehicles with extremely tall wheels that absorb energy from impact run more efficiently do to lower rotating weight and driven by direct hub drive dc motors powered by small diesel generator/ solar and battery reserve. What would this look like? Who cares about looks!
Who said traction was not dependent on surface area? Tires of the same compound the wider on will have more traction, the only wat out isis a different better compound. If the tire has less weight in a taller configuration it will have more centrifugal energy.
