Q: Im building a new house, and I would like to go totally off the grid in South-Central Oklahoma.Id like to be able to run the tv, freezer, refrigerator, and minimal lights and water well.Im looking for information on a complete system.Any ideas/? Im looking for the pros and cons of this way of life from homeowners that have actually done this.
My grandfather put 2 inches of foam board around his freezer, except for the coils- hardly goes on at all. Anything to reduce power useage is good.
Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a Kubota Diesel Generator. I have read in many places that the Kubota Diesel engine is the gold standard of Diesel engines. So I'm not worried about that. What i need to know is this, is the generator as a whole dependable? Will over loading it for a few short seconds when the AC compressor kicks in burn it out or shorten its life?Any other insight would be appreciated. Thanks for your answers
Kubota diesel plants are being used more and more in industry, replacing some of the old standbys like Kohler, Perkins and even Caterpillar in lighter applications. I don't think you will regret buying a Kubota.
Q: What is the difference between a diesel generator and a super silent generator?
Therefore, some environments need to be quiet, then you must use the super silent generator
Q: And WHY?
Hydrogen fuel cell cars are electric cars, where the fuel cell serves as the battery. So the hydrogen, electric, and battery cars are all electric vehicles, while the gas and diesel cars are petroleum powered. * Gasoline is not efficient (maybe 15% efficient in traffic), and it is not clean. Since it takes about 6 kilowatt-hours of energy just to refine a gallon of gasoline or diesel, and this energy alone could power an EV 20 to 30 miles all by itself, it is quite impossible to build an gas powered vehicle more efficient than an electric vehicle - the EV has already driven to it's destination on the energy you used just to make your gasoline. * This leaves the contest between hydrogen fuel cells and batteries. Unfortunately, hydrogen is not really a fuel - it is like the lithium in a lithium battery - it is just part of a chemical system for storing energy. * Energy is stored by separating hydrogen from water - and energy is then released by combining hydrogen with oxygen to make electricity in the car, creating water again. This is a reversible chemical process, exactly how a battery works. The energy does not come from hydrogen, typically it comes from the electricity used to separate hydrogen. The hydrogen stores the electricity, just like a battery does. * But the hydrogen cycle I have described is much less efficient than other battery technologies. So battery powered EVs are the most energy efficient.
Q: I am considering buying a back-up generator system for my newly bought home, the only problem is that my home is 4,947sq. ft, and I seem to find a single generator that is capable of powering my entire, will buying a few portable or large sized stand-by generators solve my problem?
If you are looking for an emergency generator capable of delivering 200A @ 240V, single-phase current (a typical whole-house size), you will be specifying a significantly large unit, something the size of a large refrigerator (on its side). If that sort of total capacity is what you want, go for it. The incremental costs for larger units is very roughly proportionate, so a unit of twice the capacity will be very roughly twice the cost. Keep in mind that these systems must be maintained properly and tested (at least monthly) regularly. If you choose a liquid-fuel model (diesel or gasoline) there is the storage and treatment issue for the tank and the fuel in it. And, as you increase size you increase fuel consumption significantly. Typically, such generators are connected only to critical systems via the transfer-switch. So, your key systems feed directly to the transfer-switch such that when there is a power failure and the generator kicks in, the transfer switch isolates those key systems from the rest of the load. In this way you could reduce your requirements to things like refrigeration, lighting, even AC and computers, leaving out items such as hot-tubs and similar. Determine your anticipated load for key items, add perhaps 25% as a safety margin and look around that capacity. MAKE SURE that you have the system - especially the transfer switch and its load - professionally installed. A mistake there could fry both your entire house system and all things attached to it, the generator, *and* get you a massive fine from your Utility. Don't mess with this.
Q: Does any one know the best way to go about have an entire house run off of a generator? Mostly likely over periods of no great than two weeks. But it needs to supply a Washer/Dryer, Central A/C, Water Heater, and all of the basics of a smaller house. I did the math and the math says the max I will need is apprx 13,500W. I've done a lot of research on portable, residential, and even green energy, but I am having trouble finding the best way to go about powering a house continually. I need something relatively quiet, or something I can run a ways from the house. And lastly one more curve ball, this is for west TX, so there's not too much rain, especially these days. But it is a desert atmosphere, so I need a way to keep it out of the elements. Any suggestions? Well ventilated shed maybe? Thanks!
This would need to be a big and expensive generator, probably water-cooled - check out prices on OKorder - if you are only there 2 weeks at a time, that is a lot of money to spend, and a big risk to leave it where it could be stolen when you are away. May I respectfully suggest that you consider non-electric alternatives? It seems rather out of place, and certainly not very green to have a petrol or diesel generator chugging away for 2 solid weeks close to what I guess is a holiday home somewhere remote in the countryside. There are fridges and freezers available which run off LPG (propane or butane) and even kerosene (which might be easier for you to transport to your holiday home) The same goes for a water heater and cooker A washer/drier seems unnecessary (and also not at all green) if you live in a desert atmosphere - take a look on OKorder with the search words as follows: caravan washing machine These small machines use very little water and energy, which I suggest will be important factors for you. Finally aircon (the trade I presently work in) - may I suggest that you look for simple, low energy units that use water evaporation for cooling (will also humidify the dry desert air) - if you follow all the above guidelines, you should be able to get by with a 3 or 5KW portable generator that you can take home for safe-keeping. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think the idea of an all electric holiday home in the wilderness is in need of a serious re-think for many reasons. Good luck!
Q: Actually , I heard someone talking about diesel generators and that voltage required, he said two types of diesel generators for electric furnaces in steel industry , the first 16000 voltage, approximately , and the second 32000 voltage I really want to know what does he meant .
Either could work. I don't know what he means.
Q: I will put this generator to power my automated vehicle which have sensors, servo for the steering, motor for the rotation of the rear shaft, laptop for camera vision etc.
A battery powered wheel chair has everything you need. You can buy an old one cheap and fix it up to work as your automated vehicle. Use Lithium Ion batteries for maximum power or one of the new AGM car batteries that provide deep discharge operation.
Q: Hello im going to be a mechanic and i will have a 1998 turbo diesel H1 Hummer. Now I wanted to know since the hummer is not like a bus or a really heavy Diesel equipment that i can work on it myself like a regular car or do i have to have to be a diesel mechanic to even work on it?
Diesel engines are very similar to gasoline engines. If you have the technical knowledge to work on gasoline engines then the same principles applies to diesel engines as well. I know this is true because I took the course for auto/diesel automotive technician certification. I rebuilt them both along with carburetors, transmissions, starters, alternators, and generators. The only difference I can recall are that the diesel engines required more or less air than the gasoline engines. Of course diesel fuels burns much slower than gasoline. Therefore diesel engines might have additional mechanisms to produce or reduce the quantity of air. That is all.
Q: Electrical Engeenearing
A diesel power plant is a stationary installation incorporating one or more diesel generator sets with controls and switchgear. Diesel plants are usually used as emergency backup systems for military installations, hospitals, and other vital installations that depend on reliable electric power. There are also diesel power plants that are the only power supply for remotely located installations and communities; for example, remote radar stations and island resort towns. In a diesel plant, there are one or more diesel generator sets, consisting of a diesel engine and a suitable generator. A typical arrangement would involve three generators of which any two can handle the peak load while the third can be held as a standby unit or dismantled for major maintenance at intervals. There will be a switchyard that contains the electrical contactors and safety devices for connecting the generators to the grid as needed, and there will be control panels for the individual generators, as well as synchronizing gear to keep the generators in phase. In many installations these controls are computerized and can be operated and monitored at a distance over the internet or other communications arrangement. Also, there will be arrangements for handling the fuel required by the engines. Often there is a large tank and separate day tanks for each engine. This type of arrangement helps ensure that the entire supply is not lost in case the fuel plumbing or day tank for one generator set springs a leak.
