Q: i have an old marine onan generator. It is a two cylinder diesel engine and the block is almost round on the bottom. I thought it was a cummins but im not sure. I know it is vague but can anyone help.: the other guys are right cummins owens onan. sounds like a 750 kw it is a good lighthouse, you find that it uses about .2 gl an hour of diesel. its some what hard on raw water impellers ( carry an Extra) and you'll need to change the mounts to stop some of the vibration other than that its been very reliable for me. it powers my 53 foot trawler no problems.

You should change the oil and filters after every 200 hours operating time. Properly maintained you should expect at least 25-30 years operating time from the engine. Neglected and it could need replacing in less than 10. Not sure what 161 gsm/hp-hr means. Unlikely to be grams, but gallons per horsepower hour would be extremely high. Need to look further into it

Then we got thinking about the massive amounts of diesel fuel in storage at hospitals etc, is there a storage life for it? and is it turned over all the time?: Scott: Since Diesel has a much lower vapor pressure than gasoline(7lbs/PSI) by far it is judged by flash point(under 130F degrees Properly stored(moisture and air is prevented from entering the tank) it can be stored almost indefinitely. These are the contaminates which degrade and evaporate regular gasoline. As gasoline evaporates( little or no problem with diesel at ambient temperatures) it leaves residues which form gums. In refineries and other business having sources of ignition, diesel is the prefered fuel for running equipment because is far less hazardous than gasoline which has a high vapor pressure and low ignition point, even a spark can set it off.
