- Red diesel is agricultural, no tax or tax reduced. The Red is only a dye to distinguish it from tax paid diesel. However using it illegally can result in very hefty fines if caught. Used and cleaned vegetable oil can be mixed with diesel, actual proportions I'm not sure of, but I think 3:1 oil to diesel. There are probably sites that explain in more detail. However why it has to be used veg. oil I don't know.

- You could use a physics-type of view that the energy supplied by the input is going to be equal to the output and an efficiency factor for your generator. Then, given the RPM of your motor, you can determine the torque because you will know the horsepower required to generate your wattage.

- That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

- Both actually, diesel fuel mostly but not entirely, here's why: All modern trains are actually electric and the diesel engine just runs a great big generator to power the electric motors. However some trains are electric and have no diesel engine at all, they get their electricity from overhead power lines. So, seeing as how more than half of all electricity in the U.S. is generated by coal, one would have to say that coal does indeed still power some of our trains and will for years to come, it is done indirectly.

- Most non-sailboat yachts longer than 40 feet (and up to 300 feet or more) are diesel powered using one or several large Caterpillar, Man, John Deere, Detroit or other similar large diesel engines. - Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??
- If you are seeing a voltage with no load, there is at least some residual magnetism in the field. Flashing the field probably wouldn't make any difference. I'd look for an open field winding or bad regulator if your machine uses brushes. If your machine is brushless, check for an open exciter winding, bad regulator, shorted or open diodes in the rotating field or open windings in the rotating field. There's a good chance that you can find decent troubleshooting advice for your generator on the smokstak forum. Fieldlines is another good resource. Don

- Vegatable oil can be used to operate a diesal engine like the one in Willie's bus. But a jet engine like those in aricraft requires a fuel with a much higher octane rating and vegatable oil won't do.
