Q: I live in a town home community. The person who loves immediately behind me (the backs of our homes face each other,) has been running a generator from 8am to 10pm every single day for the last two weeks. It is driving me up a wall. It's right outside my bedroom and kitchen. I have complained to the HOA and the town but nothing has been done. Is running a generator even efficient? I imagin e spends more on gas every day then he would electric. Why not just sell the generator to pay the bill???
Nowhere near as efficient or cheap as electricity off the grid, Sounds like this person is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and is just compounding his financial woes, but then again you might want to check with others in your area to see if there having the gas in there vehicles stolen in the middle of the night. Desperate people will do desperate things, With that said I'm surprised your HOA has not done something, normally there pretty strict about matters such as these, Kinda the point behind a HOA, I'd suggest you talk to the HOA director and get some answers there.

The only thing I can think of is watch the second Thomas Edison Bio film and pay careful attention to when he is working on lighting up the city using his electric light bulb. He had to synchronize two generators at that point. I'm sure you can find the answer there.

All diesel locomotives actually are now self-generating electrics. The diesel turns a generator that powers YOOOOJ electric motors geared to the drive wheels. IOW the electric part is the transmission between the engine and wheels. As for carbon output Assume 0.4 # of fuel per horsepower per hour. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!

When talking about an electric generator you have to include the quality of the driver as well as well as the control system. If the generator/driver is large enough and the controls are of sufficient quality to maintain the voltage and frequency then it doesn't matter what the power is used for.It will be more than adequate to safely supply AC units or just about any other equipment.

Q: i have an old marine onan generator. It is a two cylinder diesel engine and the block is almost round on the bottom. I thought it was a cummins but im not sure. I know it is vague but can anyone help.
the other guys are right cummins owens onan. sounds like a 750 kw it is a good lighthouse, you find that it uses about .2 gl an hour of diesel. its some what hard on raw water impellers ( carry an Extra) and you'll need to change the mounts to stop some of the vibration other than that its been very reliable for me. it powers my 53 foot trawler no problems.

Contact several local electrical contractors in your area to get some design build estimates. The size is a small consideration rather the durable type of generator you need that can run as a quiet unit for many years is a problem. The best solution is probably 2 or 3 medium size generators that can be run in a parallel configuration. 5 units to power might be as little as 100 amps each so 500 amps at 240 volts is about a 120KW so 3 units of 40 KW each might be a consideration. Using multiple units will allow maintenance on one unit and not lose power. For prices the electrical contractor in your area will know more about what the labor rates are for this type of project. I will give AWAG that $10,000 per KW is not too far off.

Very similar to comparing Apples to Oranges. Diesel Engine provides mechanical output. When connected to a Generator it becomes Diesel Electric with Electric out put. In terms of efficiency you rate the Diesel, the coupling and the Generator power factor to rate efficiency.

How much power do they consume? How big is your diesel generator? A big enough diesel generator might as well be a power plant. A town full of Alaskan natives aren't going to use as much power as say, a town full of Americans.
