- All diesel locomotives actually are now self-generating electrics. The diesel turns a generator that powers YOOOOJ electric motors geared to the drive wheels. IOW the electric part is the transmission between the engine and wheels. As for carbon output Assume 0.4 # of fuel per horsepower per hour. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!
- Q: have several question about diesel alternator. First of all i want build micro hydro system using diesel alternator. That means i just take the alternator and using water to rotate the turbine and the alternator will produce the power. Do you think this system is possible to do? Before this i use the car alternator, and the problem is before alternator connected to the battery i get about 3000 RPM, but when i connect the alternator to the battery and field current occur, the RPM dropped to 500 RPM. So the alternator can't produce the current. So i want try using diesel alternator. Since we know diesel alternator power output in AC, so no field current needed. If i get around 3000 RPM, whether diesel alternator produce the power? Or it same with car alternator.
- all alternators produce alternating current---by definition--duh it is then rectified by (usually internally mounted) diodes you are loading your system with a partially discharged battery and the voltage that the regulator is set to is trying to charge the battery at a rate greater than the mechanical power (turbine + water) can supply thus it slows down until the demand matches the supply if you left the system until the battery voltage increases you would find that the system would turn faster until the voltages matched each other and it would be doing 3000 rpm

- Is this generator going to be used in a location which is normally served by grid power. If so is it proposed to use the distribution system normally used when on the grid? If the answer to these questions is yes. The first step is to isolate the normal energy source. This has two purposes. a) to protect your equipment when power is restored and b) to protect people and equipment working on the external circuit. Once this is isolated wire the generator into the circuit (closing isolating switch if hard wired). Start the generator using normal procedures with minimal load in place. Slowly increase load until desired effect is achieved. When external power is returned. Slowly reduce load and isolate generator. Restore normal grid connection. Shut off generator.

- It is absolutely possible. I've been thinking the same thing for a while now. The first step I think is to build an hydrogen/oxygen generator system then incorporate it into an existing portable electric generator that runs on gas. The next step should be to make adjustments to the gas/HHO mix and make it run. Lastly, do the tweaking until the motor runs exclusively on HHO. Sounds simple? Of course not.
