Q: Does any one have any experience with Kipor Diesel Generators?I know the price is really good. But are they reliable? Or will i shoot myself for buying another Chinese product?I'm looking at model KDE16STA: Dont buy anything Chinese. They are not interested in customer satisfaction or quality and just want to shift as much product as possible. The materials are usually sub-standard and the build quality is total rubbish! I guess it depends what you want it for? If it is a one off use and then you are prepared to throw it away then maybe consider it but otherwise spend even double the amount and get some equipment that can be serviced and that has a customer service and back up plan. It will be more value in the long run. It is also more patriotic.

Can I take the motor out of a diesel generator or should I buy a new/used one made specifically for a motorcycle?: The military has some Kawasaki KLR 650's converted to diesel, try hunting for one of them at army surplus stores. You do realize that bio-diesel takes more energy to produce than gasoline right? That's why it has been abandoned as an alternative fuel. But by all means go ahead, a diesel bike would be cool!

HydrogenSolar (Doubt it)Bio-FuelAnything else?Also, is it best to convert an existing design of generator, buy a new one or build one from scratch to fit?Any help would be truly awesomePeace: Electric heating of your hot water is very inefficient since you have so much heat rejected in the exhaust for every KWHr you make. Your best bet would be to use the exhaust heat and/or jacket cooling water from a biofueled generator to heat the hot water tank. You get very high efficiencies from that combination. I have seen such devices talked about (see the link below) for years, but have recently seen one that is actively under development. It may be a bit oversized for your RV, however, since it is for a house. You may be able to just add a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use a small, thermostatically controlled pump to circulate the hot water from the tank through the tubes. Biofuels are not as available as gasoline, but if you research where you are going, you may find they are more prevalent than you think. Also, the generator will be able to run on fossil fuels as well, giving you a back up in case you can't find biofuel. Hydrogen is interesting, but I can't think a commercially available generator that runs on it. And you would still have the efficiency issue unless you recovered the exhaust heat like I have said for the biofuel. I can't think that solar would work well, you have such a limited amount of collection surface on the roof, and lugging around batteries and/or hot water is also inefficient. I have been on trips where it was cold and cloudy for a week, solar would not do well under those circumstances.

Q: I live in an area where storms are quite common, in fact the storm season approaches us. We have thunderstorms during which our lights start flickering. I am scared that one day light's would go out and we'd be left in the dark, to be safe, I want to build a small generator electric. I am not talking about toy generators or stuff like that. I want a small generator, one that I can use to charge cell phone (if dead) or power up the radio. So please go easy on the engineering lingo.: A cellphone can also be charged with a little hand sized charger using a couple of AA Batteries. There are wind-up radios available. If you need light, Tino-sby has the right answer. Note: Diesel is best because the fuel is much less inflammable, and does not decay when stored for long periods. (Note that you can get fuel preservative additive in any good cay accessory shop if you go for gasoline fuel.)
