- Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

- With respect, you're actually asking how to design and build your own engine. There are entire books on the subject, and you need plenty of diagrams as well. That's far beyond the scope of an answer on here. But if all you need is a 12v regulated dc power supply why not just get a model car or boat engine and see if you can hook it up to a car alternator from a scrapped vehicle via a suitable pulley gearing? It certainly won't be quiet though, and you'll need to ensure that the engine is either fan or water cooled and that there's a suitable exhaust outlet. Model diesel engines aren't very large, but there are larger scale copies of the old British Mills engine design made in India, and also various websites which give you details or sell you plans on how to build your own. Usually they have lapped pistons so don't need the complication of piston rings.

- If you mean, 40 KVa generator,you may be able to run it by a water wheel, but you need a water discharge head of 50 to 100 ft. Most developed hydroelectric power have discharge heads of 300 ft.
- Q: If a 13L big diesel engine can produce 400 hp at 1800 rpm, and a 7L diesel can produce 400 hp at 3600 rpm, but the 13L produces twice the torque, which would produce more electricity?
- The 13 L of course, but in the case of a generator its usually limited somehow, also its more about fuel efficiency with power generation then anything, you want it to last through a storm or power outage for as long as possible and a 13 L will chug way more gas then the 7L, also what kind of engine are these a thirteen liter diesel engine only putting out 400 hp is a joke and it could go higher then 1800 RPM. So yes the 13l would produce more electricity quicker, but the 7L would be more useful and practical.
- Q: I have a Diesel generator using leroy sommers alternator and which uses intelilite MRS 11 controller , it is 380 V , 50 Hz , yesterday i started having problems , after running the genset for like 12 seconds it shuts down and i get two error msgs the first one is : Shutdown Level for Phase 1 under volts the second error msg is : Shutdown Level for Gen voltage Unbalance .in the first 12 seconds the voltage on 3 phases got no problem and after 12 seconds the generator auto shuts down and i cannot seem the find the problem , any help will be appreciated
- As a rule of thumb, the first alarm is the one which triggers the rest, so, concentrate on that one. If you have only one phase with a low voltage alarm, a) there is a short somewhere on that phase. Check the phase currents before shut down. If everything looks ok , probably a generator winding is shorted. b) Check the phase voltages before shut down, if everything looks ok, the relay is faulty, have it checked. -

- I think you mean diesel-electric generator. Properly, a diesel generator is a factory that makes diesel fuel. And the parts (at a high level, as there are thousands of parts total) are a diesel engine, plus fuel tank. an electric generator or alternator and electronic and mechanical controls to adjust the engine and generator so that it outputs the required voltage and frequency as the load changes.

- Doesn't. Rotor (w/ magnets) spins in a stator (coil). When power transfer switch detects a loss of line power, isolates line feed (to prevent linemen from getting zapped), lines up load feed (to house or wherever) and trips starter circuit to gen-set. Or, you go out to shed,shut off your main, plug in your auxiliary cord, and pull-start the SOB.
