Q: How does a throttle actuator/control for a generator know to increase decrease throttle based on electrical current demand?I’m thinking of building a DC generator using a diesel engine and a PMAC motor but am confused as to how I will vary the engine speed automatically to meet the varying current demand. Thanks!: eir if you sense the current load by a line resistance of perhaps 0.1 ohm, you can increase or decrease the RPM of the generator as the current rises and falls

Q: I am considering buying a back-up generator system for my newly bought home, the only problem is that my home is 4,947sq. ft, and I seem to find a single generator that is capable of powering my entire, will buying a few portable or large sized stand-by generators solve my problem?: Multiple generators will only magnify the problem. Getting a properly sized generator and transfer panel will make backup power connection quick and safe. Determine the size of generator required. Do you want an automatic start system or will a manual connection be suitable? Choose a fuel type. Gasoline is by far the most common and easiest fuel, but has issues with long term storage. Diesel is better for long term storage. If your home is equipped with natural gas or propane those could be used to power the generator as well. Read through my generator page for other ideas.

Q: Hi, i have a peugeot diesel conected to an 8kw alternator via a lay shaft engine 2275rpm alt 1500rpm at 2250rpm engine produces max torque 70lb ft, alt should only need 33lb ft. under heavy load engine allmost stalls. How big is your home or wherever you're trying to heat? I would recommend a diesel generator as opposed to a gasoline generator. They're more efficient, which also translates to being much cheaper to run. They make silent diesel generators (not 100% silent but decently quiet). If you wanted to do some welding with the generator, you could do that too. This site has several kinds of generators listed gtpower.ca

Q: I know a train runs on an electric engine powered by a diesel generator. Would something like this be feasible for cars?: Chevrolet is coming out with something similar in 2010. The Chevy Volt is an electric car (axle driven only by an electrical motor powered by a bank of Lithium Ion batteries), but has a gasoline engine on-board to generate electricity to power the car when you run the batteries down. The gasoline engine in the Volt is not mechanically linked to the drive train and cannot be used to directly move the car. So electric locomotives are not the answer, the transmission of power is only one more place to loose the amount of energy generated. Solar Turbines at one time had a wood chip fired turbine that could generate electricity and that might be adaptable for mobile applications. Our rail system is reaching the point of saturation, and many of the rail lines that have been abandoned can not be reclaimed. Which means we had better develop the transporter beam and do away with so many other methods of transportation. Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life here!
