- With respect, you're actually asking how to design and build your own engine. There are entire books on the subject, and you need plenty of diagrams as well. That's far beyond the scope of an answer on here. But if all you need is a 12v regulated dc power supply why not just get a model car or boat engine and see if you can hook it up to a car alternator from a scrapped vehicle via a suitable pulley gearing? It certainly won't be quiet though, and you'll need to ensure that the engine is either fan or water cooled and that there's a suitable exhaust outlet. Model diesel engines aren't very large, but there are larger scale copies of the old British Mills engine design made in India, and also various websites which give you details or sell you plans on how to build your own. Usually they have lapped pistons so don't need the complication of piston rings.

- Q: I am trying to use a marine deep cycle battery and power inverter to power a chest freezer in an ice cream truck. The issue is that the marine battery will drain in a few hours. I was told told that I could connect the inverter to the car battery as well as the marine battery and while the engine is running, the car battery would be charge the marine battery through the inverter. Can anyone tell me how this works and how I should do the wiring?thanks
- Just run heavy gage wire from one battery to the other, pos to pos neg to neg, no big deal, however your alternator ain't gonna like working that hard and will go see Allah in a very short period of time, so a high output alt will be needed sooner rather than later, and with the price of gas and seeing the shape some of those ice cream trucks are in, I see a lot of melted ice cream in your future. maybe a small generator would be more cost effective. almost forgot. if the wattage output of your inverter is not enough to power a freezer,which take quite a bit, you'll smoke the motor out of your freezer in a matter of days if not hours. yea lots of melted ice cream
- Q: I am looking for the stand by large generator 15-20kw (to use all the power on one transfer switch). The problem is that stand by generator require large propane tanks (expensive to install). I would like to find a stand by generator that i could run off gasoline and use all of it available power. I think this would the most economical solution. In case of propane/natural gas the cost of propane tank installation is significant. The diesel stand by generators are significantly more expensive. So far I have found tri-fuel13kw portable generator that has several outlets. In this case not all the power can be utilized.
- Why do you need something that big? A 15kw gasoline generator is going to use 2-3 gallons per hour fully loaded and close to 1 gallon per hour at light load, and a 20 even more than that, hence you might not have to have a large propane tank but you will have a large gasoline tank. That is enough capacity to run a clothes dryer, water heater, and range (all electric of course) all at the same time. I personally got one of the Chinese 2 stroke 800w generators, its KWH per gallon performance is poor but in the winter it will run my gas furnace just fine and it only needs to be run several hours per day to keep the place above freezing. I have some batteries and inverters for lighting and I can cook with a portable propane camping stove. Since gasoline doesn't store well without going bad you will have to rotate your stock of it probably by using multiple small cans or by having a big tank and using your supply in your car and getting more as needed. Propane in a leak-free tank will store indefinitely Diesel will also store long term by occasionally treating it with fungicide and keeping any water drained off the bottom. Natural gas is obviously just piped in.
- Q: If global warming is as bad as Scientists say, two hours a month without power seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure theres a way to keep hospitals running and emergency services running. All shops would have to lock down I guess people would start rioting or something, but I would think there would have to be some sort of way to covertly have different towns and counties shut down for a couple hours discretely each monthmaybe at night when people are sleeping? - Q: I have been given a cheap diesel generator made from china. It starts alright, but seems to be reving very high and poping and spitting until it has ran for a while. It surges some times as well. I don't really like it much and haven't used it to power anything other then to load test it a bit. - A mine can take a *LOT* of power. If it were just the people, and they were not used to electrity, maybe a MegaWatt would be enough, for a while at least. Since you would be burning diesel to make the electricity, price would be high. You might want to get firm contracts that somebody would buy all you generate.
