Pneumatic starting was used for some engines. Compressed air was pumped into the cylinders of the engine until it gained sufficient speed to allow ignition, then fuel was applied to fire the engine. The compressed air was supplied by a smallauxiliary engine or by high pressure air cylinders carried by the locomotive. Electric starting is now standard. It works the same way as for an automobile, with batteries providing the power to turn a starter motor which turns over the main engine. In older locomotives fitted with DC generators instead of AC alternators, the generator was used as a starter motor by applying battery power to it.

- That all depends upon a number of things. First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

- The governor keeps the motor from running faster than a set rate, an actuator receives an input from a button and causes a mechanical device to engage. Speed and Load controllers determine how fast the generator motor should turn over for a certain electrical demand, as in number of devices plugged in to the electric socket.

- You know, it not that bad, so not sure why you say they vulnerable to black outs, sure we have some, but not that often, ok? Here the thing, all electric power on island generated by diesel generators, and some time they break down, and infroastructure very suseptible to dampness, so when it rain, like rite now, we gonna get some power outages, but I neva see a true black out where all power out in city, that kinda thing, ok? - Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??
