- Q: I live in a town home community. The person who loves immediately behind me (the backs of our homes face each other,) has been running a generator from 8am to 10pm every single day for the last two weeks. It is driving me up a wall. It's right outside my bedroom and kitchen. I have complained to the HOA and the town but nothing has been done. He is using a generator to power his whole house because they ran up their electric bill over the winter, didnt pay, and now can't afford to have it turned back on. Is running a generator even efficient? I imagin e spends more on gas every day then he would electric. Why not just sell the generator to pay the bill???
- Well it does cost more to constantly run the generator you are right there, unless it is on natural gas then probably not. What has happened is the electric company probably won't let him have service again because he owes them money for the unpaid bills, and he will have to pay the owed money plus late fees to get the power back on. So in his feeble mind he thinks running the generator is sticking it to the man so to say, when really he is only costing himself more money in the end and annoying the neighbors in the process. Sorry but if the HOA or town has no rules on owning and operating a generator there might not be much you can do. He is operating it within what I would call respectable time frames. I am not in support of him running it all the time but it is what it is. You could call the police and see if they could do something but don't expect it to be much.
- Q: I have a generator overseas and it has been giving me problems. It ran for 7 days, died due to over heat. fixed that prob, now it wont start, gives me a code 0097 01, water in fuel. but the sensor is good, wires read good. At a brick wall here.
- I looked online and this company makes everything from small gas driven to large diesel driven. You say the code is for water in the fuel and if it's diesel water would ruin the injectors so it very well could not allow it to start for that reason. At a minion you need to tell us a little more. Did it shut its self down for the over heat or did it size and shut down? that is a good point to start with.
- Q: I guess the batteries are just extra weight - I'm not looking for an exact math answer, I could do the same thing. Or use a different gen, etc. to increase HP. I'm just interested in this concept of using the generator to move the vehicle along till real power is contributed by a battery bank.
- As you increase horsepower, you increase weight. Refer back to your original question, I listed some useful answers that apply here as well. The basic principle you are thining of is exactly the principle of a modern Diesel electric locomotive short of the battery bank. As a concept- it is very workable. 3 Phase power has an advantage to it of space and weight savings for the horsepower versus single phase.
- Q: Diesel trains use electric motors because the low-end torque is much greater than a mechanical drive drive train, I was wondering, since low-end torque is essential to starting with heavy dead weight, why more trucks and SUVs don't have electric motors on the wheels?
- Have you check the price of gas lately??? It has gone up over $.45 cents a gallon since August by memorial day gas will over $3.75 for premium gas. The, muscle cars and trucks will be built lighter and more fuel efficient. Gas. will be reaching about $4.50 a gallon in about 1 1/2 years. Government standards are also having effect on gas mileage of future cars and trucks. Back in the old days! muscle cars were getting around 8-12 mpg and then there were gas stations on every corner and gas was selling for $.18-.25 cents a gallon. About 1974 gas hit and all time price record of $.50 cents per gallon. There were gas lines and gas shortages etc.
- Q: For over a year, about once a month I start this Jeep and run it about 10 minutes. Zero problems until yesterday. It has fresh gasoline just added, cranks over fine, has spark (I have a spark tester) but will not 'pop' over. Upon closer inspection I see it has at least 6 Bosch type relays under the hood and know if one sticks something will not turn on. Any idea's where to start troubleshooting?(I am a retired US Navy diesel generator mechanic).
- spray some ether in the intake and see if it fires, if so follow the fuel system until you find the issue. Make sure the fuel pump is running, and make sure you are getting fuel to the engine. A bad fuel pump relay or plugged fuel filter could cause this. Also check your air filter, in one case i saw a vehicle where someone had checked their oil then left the rag under the hood, well the engine creates a vacuum when its turning over and running, well it pulled the rag into the air box and plugged the filter.
- Q: I was talking with a friends and I know gas in a car or lawnmower etc will go bad after a certain amount of time. Then we got thinking about the massive amounts of diesel fuel in storage at hospitals etc, is there a storage life for it? and is it turned over all the time?
- Scott: Since Diesel has a much lower vapor pressure than gasoline(7lbs/PSI) by far it is judged by flash point(under 130F degrees Properly stored(moisture and air is prevented from entering the tank) it can be stored almost indefinitely. These are the contaminates which degrade and evaporate regular gasoline. As gasoline evaporates( little or no problem with diesel at ambient temperatures) it leaves residues which form gums. In refineries and other business having sources of ignition, diesel is the prefered fuel for running equipment because is far less hazardous than gasoline which has a high vapor pressure and low ignition point, even a spark can set it off.
- Q: i read alot, maybe them all, but i cant understand how yachts work or get their power from. Please help !!
- Most non-sailboat yachts longer than 40 feet (and up to 300 feet or more) are diesel powered using one or several large Caterpillar, Man, John Deere, Detroit or other similar large diesel engines. A yacht shorter than 40 feet is often gasoline powered. None are battery powered. All large yachts have diesel generators which are used to generate electric power for the onboard electrical systems. When a yacht is docked it usually obtains power from the shore using a large cable that connects to shore power supply systems. Yachts with sails usually also have a single small diesel engine that allows them to maneuver in harbors and other places where sailing might be dangerous or impossible.
- Q: I need to write up a pre fire plan for the Emergency Diesel Generator room aboard the ship I sail on at school, does anyone have any information? Thanks
- Nopebut I can write one for a Brigade Combat Team in the attack or on the defense
- Q: I understand that it powers your stuff. But how does it get power? How long can it run before losing it's power? Please no physics, just a simple answer. Thanks!
- If you know how a motor turns then in its simplest terms, a generator is a backwards motor. Electricity powers the motor. In a generator an engine turns the motor producing electricity. Its about passing wires through magnetic fields and such.
- Q: Electrical Power Generator, Capable of using JP-8 fuel.
- 1 IS DIESEL THE OTHER IS PJ-8 FUEL
