Q: I have a 3 phase 30k 60hz generator what would I need to do to use this to power my home ?
If the voltage is correct and you have access to the neutral the transfer switch is required by NEC. The electrical connections are neutral to the grounded conductor and one line to one leg and another line to the other leg with the 3rd phase isolated. Since the configuration of 3 phase generators may vary it is best to have a qualified professional electrician who has experience with them do the work. Some generators are Y configuration but others are a delta configuration with a tapped neutral. This will result in 1 high leg voltage which will damage electrical equipment. This size generator is best powered by diesel. Hope this helps. I repeat get an electrician who has worked on these units they are seldom a DIY for emergency power for a home most systems are single phase 120/240 volt 60 HZ in North America.
Q: how is the diesel power transmitted to the traction wheels in a diesel locomotive
In most Locomotives it is using a Generator driving Electric Motors. The post about the Western Regions Hydralics is correct. But the (Great) Western habits die hard. The Adelante high speed DMUs have a Voith Hydralic drive and the High Speed Train Power cars are getting MTU (Maybach) engines. Hydralic transmission is very common in muliple units as they are more efficient then electric transmission for the smaller engines (up to about 700hp). There is also Mechanical Transmission used in railcars, much like a car's gearbox, this is rare in the UK but more common in Europe
Q: I own a Chinese made diesel generator. 10HP, 5kW, which recently stopped putting out power. The generator head has three separate power outputs; 120VAC (#1) 120VAC (#2) and 12VDC for battery charging. All three ceased output simultaneously. I've tried re-exciting or flashing the alternator, which didn't do anything other than make it knock when it generated a magnetic field.I've been told my voltage regulator may have failed, but I have no knowledge of how the AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) on the high-voltage side may work to verify.Ideas? Thanks!
Some have safety fuses or circuit breakers to safeguard Voltage spikes. Check also for a switch which enables the generator once the deisel moter has been started. This link may help as well
Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a 15KVA Cummins generator.I want to know how many hours can I run a Diesel Generator before I have to give it a rest? How many hours do I need to rest it before I can get it started again. I live in a hot and dusty area.I have heard that Diesel engines are happier if they are just kept running and they hate being turned off and on, is that true?Any help or insight would be appreciated.Greetings from Iran
you need to read the documentation. No such thing as a diesel that runs forever All engines need fluids checked. In generators, there is prime power and standby power. Your warranty will be different for each type. The prime units can run for very long times, but are more expensive and have oil adding systems, etc to automoatically maintain levels and things like that. The diesel engine can be shhutdown and restartted like a gas engine. The turbo and starter motor are the real reasons for not doing short starts and stops. Also, how much load/environment you put on the generator makes a difference in how long it can run too. They can run for a long time as long as they are checked and maintained.
Q: Diesel generator belongs to special equipment
Special equipment refers to the safety of life, greater risk of boilers, pressure vessels
Q: I live in a location without municipal water supply. I could buy a natural gas generator, and hire an electrician to connect it to my breaker box, but I believe there is a way to connect solar panels to a battery system to provide enough power for my 220 volts submerged pump. I have 2 horses, 24 chickens, 2 dogs, 4 cats, 3 parakeets, and 3 people that need water in the event of a hurricane, national power grid attack, etc. There are solar powered generators advertised, but they are not powerful enough for 220. Also, my whole neighborhood of over 200 homes all lives off their own water wells, and we all suffered during hurricane Ike: 10 days without a water supply.
i know you are interested in producing solar energy. I'm going to be your solar mentor and show you step-by-step how to make a solar panel. I'll also teach you my other secrets to renewable energy in an easy to follow format. Did you know? A basic solar installation from a retailer can take 30 years to pay back and cost you well over $20,000?
Q: How bout you??? According to physics traction is not dependent on surface area. I'm vehicles with extremely tall wheels that absorb energy from impact run more efficiently do to lower rotating weight and driven by direct hub drive dc motors powered by small diesel generator/ solar and battery reserve. What would this look like? Who cares about looks!
I haven't been in a physics class for 20 years, so don't know what those guys are talking about. I do know race cars need more traction than normal vehicles because of the maneuvering they do at high speeds, plus an engine many times more powerful than anything we would likely need. I think of road bike and mountain bike tires; the first is so much easier to propel than the latter, but isn't very good in the mud. Most vehicles don't need wide tires, but they are a macho factor.
Q: Do they look any different? I can not see the difference and I do not know which trains are electric and which ones are diesel. If there is any difference in appearance, what is the difference?
If it has a raised pantograph on the roof (or in some cases, a slider connecting to an electric live rail next to the track), it's electric. If it emits exhaust gas, it's diesel (or steam). Rango forgot about hydrodynamic transmissions. Not all diesel trains have electric transmission, though it's used by a majority of diesel trains in the world. And some modern diesel locomotives actually have a very good noise dampening, so they are not much louder than an electric locomotive.
Q: I live in southern Indiana, and am currently living through an awesome ice storm. Anyway, my parents bought a diesel powered portable generator. It is hooked into the main panel of the house. When you crank it up and turn the lights in the house on, they flicker, as does the TV screen. It has proper voltage on each leg of the 240. I brought my generator over and everything works fine. Any ideas?
if you hooked another generator to your panel and it worked fine the new generator is the problem. unless you changed the way you hooked it up. in that case look at your connections, closely at the ground for sure
Q: For a new observatory in the Andes at 17,000 feet, we need to provide power continuously for 4 months. Requirement is 208VAC, 3 phase, 10 kW. The site is accessible by large truck, but connecting to the power grid is out of the question. We are thinking diesel generators and large fuel tanks. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
Check with the manufacturer, they will have derating tables habdy. You would probably need something approaching 30kW. You need to know what the generator can actually handle. Some generators need to be used at a minimum percentage of rated load to operate properly and reliably. Caterpillar have a section that deals in generators. Because of the remoteness reliability would no doubt be an issue. Go for a known name brand.
